I'm in for Black Narcissus and Red Shoes. I've never even heard of The Secret of the Grain but will obviously netflix it to determine a purchase.

Love those covers. Look out behind you, Sister Clodagh!
These are Day 1 buys for me, something I almost never do. I'll be greedy and hope that I Know Where I'm Going and The Life & Death Of Colonel Blimp will follow before too long. No point in wishing for A Matter Of Life & Death; Sony owns it and it took them forever just to get it out on DVD.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Ok, I'll probably get blasted for this, but here goes (I'm sick of searching.)
For recent DVD releases on Criterion (specifically Germany Year Zero, Open City, Paisan) are they going to release these in Blu-ray any time soon? The question is, should I buy them on DVD or just wait. Do they intend to make all recent releases available on Blu-ray? I wish they would just switch over already and do dual releases or just blu-ray. This is getting confusing...

Well, Bottle Rocket is available on Blu-ray. Rushmore and The Life Aquatic aren't announced but who knows. I've heard rumors of The Darjeeling Limited joining the Criterion collection sometime in the future and that, to me, would be an ideal Blu-ray candidate.

I do hope that Criterion does dual releases. Although I imagine they probably make more money doing it the way they are doing now. There are still a number of strict non-Blu fans (visit the Criterion Forum) who only purchase the DVD versions of movies. As for myself, I purchase all their new releases on Blu-ray and occasionally re-visit some of their older re-releases too. I am not in any position to re-buy my entire Criterion collection for Blu-ray. They have upgraded some of my favorites like Pierrot le fou and The 400 Blows but I can pass on some of the other Godards and any of the other Antoine Dionels.
Maybe the Rossellini films will be released on Blu-ray next year or maybe they won't. It's too soon to tell.

Since these were just released three months ago, I'd say it's extremely unlikely that any or all of the War Trilogy titles will be released in HD before 2011 at the very earliest. I'd hold out on the DVDs until July though, to see if B & N will be holding another 50% off sale. In the meantime you can rent them from Netflix, though they may only carry the earlier, inferior Image editions. Criterions always have relatively high resale value, so you should be able to get back a good chunk of your DVD investment if/when a Blu-ray release eventually appears.

I just don't understand - I thought that I read that they have been restoring their editions to blu-ray quality for some time now, even if they were only releasing on DVD. Why wouldn't they restore them to blu-ray quality and dual release? Oh well.

Studios have been doing HD transfers for years. However, a BD release has additional costs and sometimes they decide it isn't worth it at the time.

While Rossellini's War Trilogy has been restored to look the best it has in decades, it's still not up to snuff with even the average DVD release - these were severely damaged prints and could never hope to even approach "blu-ray quality". Not only would they not look any better on blu-ray than they do on DVD, but the extra resolution would only enhance the shortcomings of the prints.

The Warholian packaging for Stagecoach will likely have a few purists up in arms.

releaselists.com's twitter page says to expect Thin Red Line August 17 or 24. That would make a good selection if Barnes and Noble has another CC sale...

DVD Beaver on Stagecoach
Nice to see Bucking Broadway is in HD, as are all of the new video supplements.
