Can't grasp why Mann believes EVEN when using the negative as a color reference... That changing color is beneficial to the film.

Fucking great film though. Jesus. It's so goddamn good.

Was thinking I was done until the Demy set hits in a couple weeks, but I've recently become very curious to see Shape Of Things To Come and some of the Cassevettes films- two Criterion packages that I've had zero interest in during past sales, despite the glowing reviews of each.

Looks like I'll be getting some use out of the next round of coupons after all.

I think digital has made directors genuinely believe that such color-timing changes are artistically beneficial for some bizarre reason.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I did buy the blu from the BN Criterion sale. I felt the same way about Collateral though. It was one of the best movies I've seen and the ending completely pissed me off. I hope it's not the same way with THIEF.

Obviously a different director, but that's how I feel about another film that Criterion released: The Game. I have no desire to see it again because of the ending.

Now see, I actually liked Collateral's ending...it's one of my favorite movies in fact. But hopefully for your sake...maybe this will be a reverse situation and you end up liking Thief's ending while disliking Collateral.

*sigh*, my copy of Game is still sealed from the last B&N sale. Maybe I should go ahead and watch it.

Let me say this: it's worth watching at least once and not everyone is going to be as averse to the ending as I am.

Let's put it this way: Suppose a studio releases a Blu-ray of Chaplin's The Gold Rush, fully colorized with a plethora different colors and shades in every shot. The studio claims that this is exactly what the movie was supposed to look like when it was released to theaters in 1925.

Fans complain: "There was no color film stock in 1925! All movies were black & white! The most a filmmaker could have done was apply broad, crude tints to some scenes, and there's no evidence that this movie ever had tinting like that."

The studio replies: "How do you know? How do you know? Stupid internet whiners. We're telling you this is what it's supposed to look like, so STFU."

Should we just take the studio at its word that this movie from 1925 was always in color, despite the fact that such a thing is totally impossible?

Chaplin's dead and so is Roland Totheroh (cinematographer) so we'll never know.

Yes, we can know that the movie wasn't in color, and we do know that it wasn't in color. Because there is a historical record we can look at which tells us that the movie was never in color.

If Charlie Chaplin were to communicate to us from the afterlife and claim that The Gold Rush was always in color, we have evidence that he's wrong and (at best) misremembering.

Do you even know what the phrase "moving the goalposts" means? You are not using it correctly.

Of course I do/am. Rather than admit yoru first shot was off you move the goal so your shot will be on target. Comparing knowing if a B&W film changed to color is a back up to your claim you KNOW your opinion on Thief is fact? = Moving the goal posts to both endlines!
