Real shame that Pro-B left this site. The foreign language forum fell to pieces after he went. He really was an invaluable resource.

Having said that I'd give Dazed and Confused 5/5 - a real personal favourite. Doesn't mean I can't see how others wouldn't like it though (or find it inferior to George Lucas's earlier version). Sad to see Supermallet have a bit of a modfart on this thread though.

That would be awesome, actually.

On the Criterionforum the current "best guess" answer to the newsletter clue is a boxset of the four (notice how the cows are vaguely, maybe, sort of in the shape of a 4) David Lean and Noel Coward collaborations - that is a Lean Coward set.

I'm not sure the cows being "vaguely, maybe, sort of in the shape of a 4" would help the clue. I could be completely wrong, but I'd assume that if it were a box set, it would consist of five films, just due to the number of cows shown. Now, I can't think of five films featuring cows off hand that would be likely inclusions to the Collection, the Lean/Coward set is as good a guess as any.

Criterion's already released Brief Encounter, though, so this could be a way of re-releasing it, kind of like how the Agnès Varda box set resulted in reissues of Cleo From 5 To 7 and Vagabond.

Oh geez, it's probably something much simpler.

I realize that. That's why I followed up with:

You're probably right, but...

Some of their more recent clues have been a lot more ambiguous than most (the "Belle du jour" one, for instance, was very obvious), and they're practically begging for people to make up all sorts of wild guesses as to what they could be hinting at. To me, the Lean/Coward set seems the most likely suggestion so far (As opposed to guessing every seemingly "Criterion-ish" film that has cows in it,) especially since there's been speculation for several years (since MGM cancelled the boxset they announced) that they were working on a set of Lean's early films.

Though, as you said, it's just as likely that it'll be something completely different. But it's fun to speculate (fun for me at least.)

I think it's referring to Twister.

"Cow."
"Another cow."
"I think that was the same one."

The cow hint is Satantango. The opening shot is 8 minutes of cows, and the cows in the hint are thin because Bela Tarr is from Hungary. Hungry Cows would be thin. I think that this is one of those times when the simplest answer is probably the correct one.

It seems (to me) a lot simpler than lean cowherd = David Lean/Noel Coward. But I know that that Criterion has mentioned somewhere that they are releasing Satantango. Personally I could care less if they do release it, but some people are excited about the idea.

I don't think Criterion would ever, and I mean ever, associate the country Hungary with the word "hungry".

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

FWIW, Colin Cowherd's favorite movies:

1. Shawshank Redemption
2. Platoon
3. Silence of the Lambs
4. The Shining
5. The Usual Suspects
6. Wall Street
7. Goodfellas
8. Apollo 13
9. Terms of Endearment
10. Presumed Innocent

Eh, I guess it's none of those either.

Is it confirmed that the Three Colors Trilogy will be part of the sale - and get the reduced price? What's the time span of the B&N sale?

Apparently Nov. 1st through the 22nd. With every sale in the past, any title released during the sale is valid, including preorders for anything coming out over the next few weeks.

I'm disappointed 12 Angry Men won't be included, but it looks like - gasp! - Netflix will actually be carrying it, so I'll at least be able to watch the film and the extras.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Went to my local B&N store yesterday and had them set aside a copy of Dazed and Confused. I also put my name in for the Three Colors Trilogy.

Now to decide what else to get...
