The Digital Bits reports that MGM/Fox will be releasing Rob Roy on 1/11/11.

It seems like catalog announcements are picking up some for the new year. I guess the studios are banking on alot more players and PS3s being sold in Q4 and maybe feel more confident to start releasing more. Universal has been hibernating this year and they're slowly waking up.

Damn it. I bought this from Amazon.co.uk a few months ago. Great PQ!

Agreed on Rob Roy. I got the German disc before the UK was out. No regrets at all.

Nice to see a studio dig deep into its catalog and release such a high-demand title.

I wonder who makes these decisions? (Or am I just completely out-of-touch when it comes to the greatness of Ishtar?)

Drexl 10-21-10 10:39 AM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Ishtar has never been released on DVD, at least not in Region 1. I would assume they're going to release it on that format as well, so I guess they figured they might as well put it on BD while they're at it.

It is suppose to be out the following week as a standalone release. Strange that there is no complete box set though.

This article talks about the digital restoration of The Bridge on the River Kwai and mentions that Taxi Driver is next on Sony's list.

Finally! Wasn't that originally slated for a 2010 release? I wish Criterion still had the rights to this, as I'd love to get the Scorsese commentary and isolated score ported from the laserdisc.

Mr. Cinema 11-02-10 06:16 AM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I thought Lawrence of Arabia was next after Bridge, but it sounds like Sony may be planning Taxi Driver for 2011 and then holding LOA back until the 50th Anniversary in 2012. That's a long ways off if it works out that way. :(

Raging Bull (30th Anniversary Edition) - 1/11

The current disc is pretty stacked, so I'm not sure what they could add in the way of new extras, except perhaps a LaMotta documentary.

Probably a DVD copy. But, they really should add Raging Bullwinkle.

The Bits has preliminary artwork for Citizen Kane and Ben Hur. Unfortunately, both are "Ultimate Collector's Editions", so they'll probably be $50 each with extra junk included. I'll definitely pass on Citizen Kane, but I may get the big set of Ben Hur. That one also will be a numbered set of 50,000.

Bah. Looks like I'll be waiting a bit for a regular Blu-ray release of Citizen Kane then.

Looking forward to paying $50 for two of the finest movies of all time with the extra junk.

Unless it comes with a BJ I won't be paying $50 for any movies any time soon. A rental works for me. I have zero interest in any extras or collectable junk they throw in these packages. If business picks up and I start making some money I can once again start thinking about doing some collecting. Until then I just want to watch a movie

I didn't think this was worth starting a new thread over, but are they going to re release "Memento" in the near future? It looks like Amazon and Wal Mart don't carry it anymore and Best Buy has it listed for $25.

Excalibur - 3/8

Mr. Cinema 11-08-10 07:47 PM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Sony's best chance of a re-release would have been to tie-in with Inception, but that won't be happening. This is also the film's 10 year anniversary.

I'm not sure what else they would use as a tie-in.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that, on February 8, 2011, it will release five catalog titles on Blu-ray, from the action and family genres: Barb Wire, Flipper, The River Wild, Uncle Buck and Waist Deep. The latter had been released in 2006 on the defunct HD DVD format, as a combo disc.
Barb Wire? Holy crap. They are really digging deep for some crap films.

Adam Tyner 11-10-10 09:32 AM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I have zero interest in any of those, but if Universal's doing its dartboard approach to selecting catalog titles, maybe there's hope for Josie and the Pussycats after all!

Uncle Buck and River Wild.

All of those should be priced at $19.99, but they probably will be $26.99.

It's a good marketing strategy....release the craps one first and then the good ones later...people are hungry for any new blu-rays!
