I might triple-dip on this one, depending on the PQ.

Restrepo 12/7

Amazing. Wasn't expecting this one on BD.

I might pick that up just for the Laserdisc Documentary (assuming it's been ported over).

Oh gees, Sony just canceled Big Daddy on Blu-ray. So for 2010, they have a total of one catalog title announced.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I don't know why they even announced Big Daddy originally. I mean, catalog sales were bad when they announced this title. I wonder what changed their mind?

I have River Kwai pre-ordered. If that doesn't sell well, then I don't expect to see Lawrence of Arabia for a long, long time.

To tie-inwith Grownups. Get it? Big Daddy. Grownups. It's like the same thing.... Sucks as I actually like Big Daddy.

Now Sony (or Criterion...) where is Punch Drunk Love?

But why pull it now? They knew catalog sales were terrible before announcing the title.

No idea. Past few weeks of sales were really bad?

Speculation here, but they may have possibly dropped the general release in favor of retailer exclusive.

I'll probably buy this. But I thought BD3D already includes a 2D version. I wonder why they are putting in a regular BD as well. I believe Disney is doing this with A Christmas Carol.

But a title rarely gets canceled because of that. We typically don't even know a title is a retailer exclusive until the ad hits (like the Lionsgate wave).

Very odd. I wonder if something went wrong with 3D and 2D on a single disc idea. Or they are just going to up the MSRP because of the extra disc ("value").

Mr. Cinema 09-22-10 09:58 AM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I thought the specs said it was required to have a 2D version on any 3D disc. Maybe not...

doctorthodt 09-22-10 10:15 AM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I think it's just that the home video market isn't saturated enough with 3D yet to the point that studios are comfortable doing 3D-only releases.

It's also possible that there isn't enough room for all the special features/lossless audio on the 3D release, and the 2D one is the "loaded" edition.

Kory 09-22-10 11:08 AM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

One "problem" with watching a 3D Blu-ray in 2D that I've read about is being able to notice the alternating fields if you don't have your TV on overscan mode. Essentially, during some frames you'll see a small "black bar" on the left side of the screen, and during other frames you'll see that same bar on the right side of the screen. Not a huge problem, but from what I've read, it can be annoying. I don't know if this is an issue with all 3D BDs or just some.

Also I've read contradicting reports on "Despicable Me." Some places say it's a Single-Disc BD release and a 4-Disc release, while others day one release is 3 discs, and the other is 4, just adding a 3D disc but identical other than that.

Gizmo 09-22-10 11:21 AM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I thought it was getting two releases? A single BD and a loaded edition.

Mr. Cinema 09-22-10 12:03 PM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Blu-ray.com has the feature list. Also, Amazon's listings show a 3-disc BD/DVD/DC combo pack, AND, a 4-disc BD/3DBD/DVD/DC combo pack.

The 4-disc set is $7 more currently.

I don't plan on getting a 3D set for at least another year, but I may make a future proof purchase and just get the 4-disc set now. It's nice though that Universal is still providing a non-3D combo pack version.

Gizmo 09-22-10 12:08 PM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Wow. 3D owners can just sell off the single BD for an easy $12-$15. Plus sell off the DC and DVD.

Mr. Cinema 09-22-10 12:10 PM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

They have that option. But I am thinking the regular BD has most of the features. Maybe that's why it's included in the 3D set.

Gizmo 09-22-10 12:12 PM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Oh probably right. Looks like disc space is going to be an issue.

Mr. Cinema 09-22-10 12:13 PM

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

50GB isn't enough. :)

But it also allows them to slap that big "Best Value" sticker on the front. "Look! 4 discs for only $34.99!"

They sure better... a lot of HDTV's wont work with the new 3D playback. Mine won't even though it claimed to be 3D future-proof (they used a different format for displaying the images in those settings -- and no adapters either). So a release option that forces you to buy a 3D Blu-ray would make them ultimately lose a lot of sales IMHO. Plus, aren't there other people out there (like me) that just don't really see much of a point?

It'll actually be worth all the delays IF we truly get both of those titles so early in January.

Well hopefully it doesn't get delayed again as I've been looking forward to Lost in Translation...

You can apparently get Lost In Translation on 12/7 if you order from Amazon.

Is Digital Bits a reliable source?

I've been checking around for anyone to have started a Backdraft thread (seems like the kind of film people would be excited about) and I've seen nothing.

I know LIT has been delayed a lot, but still I don't tend to let myself excited until multiple forums are "talking" about the release.

So is it premature to even believe DB and that Backdraft will be mine on January 4th.

It depends if you count the 87 times they tried to be the first to announce the imminent release of Star Wars on DVD years before they came to fruition.

Crap news that My Dog Skip got cancelled. Big Daddy now this and many others plus the ones supposedly sitting around ready to be released but for whatever reason not. Sucks.

I know others have much higher priorities and so do I, but every catalog release is important to me. I want Freeway on blu! The more the better so another cancelled title blows. I just don't get this format. Especially why studios announce something and then don't follow through. They had to know MDS wasn't going to be a huge seller.

But I'm guessing neither was Secretary or Hard Candy and they got great releases. I don't get it.

Got this from Amazon.fr about two months ago. I love this film. It's like the male version of "Amelie".
