In other news today, Universal has announced a pair of new catalog Blu-ray titles that have us pretty excited: Darkman and Flash Gordon are expected to street on 6/15. Looks like everything from the previous DVDs will be included... which is to say not much. Darkman has nada, while Flash will include a pair of featurettes (Alex Ross, Renowned Comic Artist, On Flash Gordon and Writing a Classic: Screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, Jr.) and the first episode of the classic Flash Gordon 1936 serial. Now, if Universal wanted to do something REALLY cool, they should include the ENTIRE 1936 serial in HD. I'm just saying. I'd LOVE to have that on Blu-ray. Anyway... audio will be DTS-HD MA for both.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

more good news...

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release two catalog titles on Blu-ray on June 15, both of which belong decidedly in the "guilty pleasure" category: Sam Raimi's Darkman, starring Liam Neeson, and the 1980 space-opera Flash Gordon, adapted from the classic 1930s comic strip and serials. Both will be presented in non-flipper, single-sided discs.

How sad is it that we now have to wait for this kind of confirmation about Universal titles now before being truly happy about their announcements...oh, how I long for the return of the good old pre-combo BD days....

Bad Boys is a DAY ONE for me.

I'm kind of bummed that Bad Boys II isn't paired with it, that's probably my favorite guilty pleasure movie of all time.

Why sell you Bab Boys II now when they can release it later only as part of a 2-pack with the first Bad Boys which you already own? It's Sony y'know.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Is it pretty much safe to assume that no big (major catalog to mid level catalog) announcements are left to be made for May? Usually if you get to the month before, if you don't see it out there, it won't be. I mean I heard we might get Punch Drunk Love and the new Gladiator in May and both seem to not be coming.

The way it looks, I'm only getting 4 BDs for the entire month of May, down from 9 in April and it's mostly to the point where new releases usually make or break the month, while catalogs seem really slow. I'm generalizing, but is anyone else feeling like it's going more slowly? I still have a LOT of dvds and I hear very little about them getting upgraded and the bigger names, like Moulin Rouge or Seven, seem like they're rumors or are taking forever.

And, of my 4 in May, 1 is The Notebook, which shouldn't count because it's only replacing the limited edition box of crap that I didn't need for the movie only version. So, 3 for a month. 2 new releases and 1 catalog. That sucks.

I was considering grabbing Edward Scissorhands for $9.99 and someone mentioned that the crappy existing release would probably be replaced with a 20 year anniversary edition. I also read another bad review of that blu and even the reviewer mentioned the "inevitable" 20 year anniversary edition should be expected. With DVD, it was a slam dunk that you could count on that. But I don't really see the studios doing that with blus. Yet the commercials for new movies coming out on dvd almost always no seem to push people towards the blu release even for a rental. I don't get it, but it's disappointing.

Didn't see anything about this yet. It snuck under the radar.

For Elvis fans, Elvis On Tour comes to Blu-ray August 3rd from Blu-ray.com

I didn't realize it was a UK announcement, so I guess the date is right. In that case, yes, I hope it's region-free.

Isn't Alpha Dog a Warner release (and also out)?

Edit: Nevermind, it was Universal. Wow. I may double-dip on that when it goes cheap enough.

The DVD of In Bruges is actually quite good, in terms of audiovisual qualities. With that said, definitely upgrading that one.

Thank goodness for In Bruges! I bought the DVD but only paid about $8 so that's no big deal. Really looking forward to seeing it in high def.

Quite a number of older catalog titles have begun coming out on BD, for those of us who have been complaining about the dearth of them since the launch of the format. There are also a lot of two movie packs coming out, as has been noted in the Bargains forum. I suppose it is a way of trying to market lesser catalog titles on Blu-ray Disc to those who might have one of them already on DVD.

"In Bruges" was my favorite film of 2008, so I couldn't even wait for the U.S. Blu Ray and bought it on Amazon.fr about a year ago and the PQ is fantastic! Easily a 9.5/10. Maybe higher. It's definitely better than the SD, which was great too.
