It's a different time. Laserdisc was not widely available at retail stores (nor was VHS or to even an extent, DVD until 2002ish). It would be like comparing the amount of people who owned cell phones in 1998 to 2010.

IGN posted that the entire series of Deadwood will be coming on November 23. The MSRP will be 209.98. I might be down when this is under a hundred.

What a random blast from the past title. Creepy film. Hope it holds up. And they do a decent job on the transfer.

Great news! My patience has (hopefully) paid off. I got The Road Runner on HD DVD for $3 but have never seen the film (even now) as I still need to see Mad Max too. Now I can get this and experience them both in High Definition. It should be a fun evening.

EDIT: Road Warrior...

A slew of re-releases are coming out way in the next month or two. All will be the BD + DVD deal as the studios try to ween retailers from carrying stand alone DVDs and stocking more BDs. Disney has a bunch coming out, as does Universal.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

The BD/DVD combo packs are likely the studios' last effort and sales pitch to get people to upgrade to BD. It made sense on new titles, but the fact that we're seeing them on alot more catalogs tells you their grand plan of total BD domination is going to fall way short.

If this new strategy doesn't pull in a bunch more new owners, I don't see BD reaching past 50% user base. I think as the years go on, it'll just be a mix of DVD, BD, and digital all owning a piece of the pie.

Just look at the hardware and newer tvs. Everything is offering up a streaming option. I think alot of people will be satisfied to rent via Redbox, stream/download rental, and buy the occasional big new release on a disc format.

I don't think it's that, necessarily. I think part of it's to ease the fact that so many people have multiple DVD players but only one BD deck. Someone might feel more comfortable buying, say, a Disney movie this way so that they can watch it in high-def at home but the kids can still watch it on DVD in the van. It may also just be a value-added thing...since most of the studios doing this are just recycling existing DVDs for it, this makes it look like a more impressive package without really costing them much of anything.

It doesn't look to my eyes to be marketed as "buy the DVD, and as an added bonus, you get this shiny new Blu-ray disc too!". Disney's done that, to be sure, but I don't get that impression from other studios. If that were the case, why put 'em in Blu-ray packaging and segmented off in an area where the DVD-only crowd will be unlikely to see them (aside from prominently featured new releases that'll be off the end caps after a week or two)? If that's the way these things are supposed to be being marketed, they're doing it completely incompetently.

Now this, as I've said probably way too frequently before, I very much agree with.

But why make this big combo push in year 4? If this is to help transition people over, then they should have included the dvd a long time ago.

October will be my most expensive blu-ray month ever and I got an e-mail today from Amazon today about finally having the official cover art for Meet the Parents/Fockers, which is also rumored for October.

So far I've never had to pray for a release to be delayed, but I'm just hoping the two "Meet the" BDs come out in November.

Well, the next sequel comes out in December. Wouldn't the first two be released at the same time?

BTW, I'm really looking forward to Moulin Rouge, but it's one of those movies that people seem to love or hate. With the talk centered on the Alien set and BTTF (and Star Wars next year), it's not going to get too much discussion here.

Looks like Troll 2 is going to have some company! It's a real shame we get this crap on Blu and not the original. :(

Was there something wrong with the DVD?

Racing Dreams BluRay/DVD maybe VOD September 28th.

A documentary that had very limited theater run from Marshall Curry director of "Street Fight"

I happened to catch it at theater and really liked it, follows three tweens as they try to live out dream of becoming NASCAR drivers. Very ironic and sad sort of tale, but a great story in the end. Documentary buffs will enjoy it.

I would just prefer if it was more than just an upgraded DVD transfer. Some of the films from the 90s are starting to look dated and I don't mean the actual movie.

Now all we need is Out of Sight, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Big Lebowski.

And Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Dazed And Confused, Mallrats, Half Baked, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Accepted, Backdraft, Liar Liar, Notting Hill, The Deer Hunter.....etc.etc.....

Universal still has a LONG way to go as far as their previous HD DVD releases are concerned....

Hope you still have a HD DVD Player around if you want to enjoy those movies. Half of those are 'done' and have been 'done' for 2 years. Its up to Universal when they actually want to release them.

That sounds like they're going to slap them on there with the same transfers as before, which would really suck for some of them.

I do....(still have a HD DVD player, that is)....I just looked over at the shelf at all the other Universal titles I have that are still format exclusive and am waiting to be released....hell, I haven't even repurchased a few on BD since they turned out to be "downgrades": Apollo 13, The Thing, etc....

I am honestly shocked that Mallrats still hasn't been ported over and released yet though....I mean, for a catalog title, you'd imagine given Smith's hardcore loyal audience, it would sell better than something like "Darkman" or "The Skeleton Key"....even Disney, who is ridiculously stingy with their live action catalog releases, gave Clerks and Chasing Amy the BD treatment....
