Star Trek TOS - Problem with Disc 3

I was going thru many of the discs last night and discovered a problem with disc 3. When trying to watch the original versions of "The Menagerie," both parts 1 & 2, at exactly 10 seconds in, the picture freezes and then the main menu appears. No matter what I do, I can't get these episodes to play past the 10 second mark.

The new "enhanced effects" versions play fine for these episodes, it's just the originals that are having problems.

I checked 4 other discs and everything seems fine with them.

I have a Panasonic DMP-BD30 player. Could this be my machine, or is anyone else having this problem?

What firmware version do you have?

Also, I see the Menagerie episodes are two of six episodes listed as having a Starfleet Access trivia track. Maybe it has something to do with it. You should check the DVD Talk review for the other episodes with the trivia track and see if you have the same problems with those.

I have a BD30 but haven't tried my discs yet.

On my PS3, those episodes play fine with original & remastered special effects. Just to make sure, does everyone else's picture during the credits on The Menagerie Part II, move side to side?

Both parts play fine on my BD30. I'm running the most current firmware, v2.8.

Re: Star Trek TOS - Problem with Disc 3

As it turns out, my Panasonic DMP-BD30 had it's original version 1.1 firmware. I upgraded it last night to 2.8 and now the Star Trek disc I was having problems with plays fine.

Many thanks to those who pointed me in the right direction.

Wow - I'm surprised this is the first time you've had problems with firmware that old!

So far I've only bought a couple of dozen Blu-ray discs and none of them have given me any problems until now. Even the James Bond titles, which caused problems on quite a few players, didn't act up on mine.

Just lucky I guess.

Re: Star Trek TOS - Problem with Disc 3

Sorry, I just realized I made a mistake in a previous post. My player did have it's original factory-set firmware, but I don't believe it was 1.1 but was 2.0. Maybe that's why I haven't had difficulties until now.

Anyway, 2.8 is what I have now and the new Star Trek discs work great!

Re: Star Trek TOS - Problem with Disc 3

so i got back home from my trip to L.A. this past week for the star trek premiere in hollywood, and i was all excited to open up my star trek season 1 only to be disapointed in finding a torn up plastic cover and cut cover art.
i called amazon but they are on back order for the series, does anyone have a cs number or email to reach paramount to try and get a replacement cover art.
thanks

You would be better off just waiting for Amazon to get more stock, which shouldn't take long.

Good luck with that, but the studios generally aren't set up for dealing directly with the public for returns. The beginning of June is about three weeks away. I'd bet dealing with Amazon will be quicker than dealing with Paramount.
