Crank on Blu question...

Ok so with the new Crank out in theaters I am looking to upgrade my SD copy. But there are conflicting reports on wether or not the extras are on the Blu-Ray.

Can those who own it tell me if there are any extras on the disc?

And also, what are the audio options?

Thanks

Sweet...thanks for that.

What is the audio...is it 6.1 or 7.1?

I believe it is PCM 7.1 from what I remember on the BD disc.

Yeah, there are a lot more extras on the Blu-Ray, actually some making of stuff. And it looks awesome.

As someone said, there are more extras on the Blu-Ray because the DVD also contains the video/audio commentary, but on DVD that means they have to include a second version of the movie with all the video bits on it, which takes up all the space.

The extras are excellent though.

Wasn't Crank a Blu-ray with a fake PIP track which required them to store a second lower-res copy of the entire movie which had "PIP" content?

Re: Crank on Blu question...

It was another encode of the film on the disc which uses the same codec as the main film so I don't think it was lower-res.

I thought that there was something about the PIP version which made it an inferior copy. I can't for the life of me remember what that was though.

Re: Crank on Blu question...

The PiP commentary was lower-res. MPEG-2 of the main movie was around 24 Mbps and the PiP was around 18 Mbps. Since the PiP was only a fraction of the entire frame, even an MPEG-2 @ 18 Mbps wasn't necessary. Half that would've been fine I think. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I might have read about that and not realized that only the PIP portion was in lower-res. Thanks for clearing that up.

As the guy who created them, thanks.

As for the PIP being "lower-res," that's not true. Because of the lack of player standards when we created the disc, the PIP version was a complete second version of the film on the disc. It was encoded with a slightly lower "bitrate," but it was created, delivered, and presented on Blu-ray in full 1080P resolution at a framerate of 23.98, just like the feature film. If I'm not mistaken, the audio is on the disc as 7.1 PCM, but the mix itself is 6.1 (with the same info in both back surround channels).

And just wait until you all see what we have planned for Crank: High Voltage!

Hasn't Crank been Lionsgate's best selling bluray to date?

I don't know if it's still their best selling BD to date. It was for a while, but they've had things like 3:10 to Yuma, Saw III, IV, and V, Forbidden Kingdom, Transporter 3, and Rambo all come out in the years since Crank was released. I'm sure one of those has since outsold it (especially with such a larger customer base since early 07 when we did the first disc). But I do know it's still up there.

Re: Crank on Blu question...

According to dvdcompare.net, the US BD has a shorter cut than the German release (whereas the various DVD releases appear to have the same cut of the film).

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is the US blu-ray an edited version indeed?

http://movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=4440 (Warning: Lots of spoilers and a few potentially NSFW images)

The extended version is six minutes longer. Most of the time difference is made up of a second here and there, completely useless stuff. There's only one actual new scene that runs about a minute.

The German release (and actually most of the foreign releases) have the longer running time by necessity. The studio/directors had to contractually deliver a film over 90 minutes for overseas markets. As smashthesymbols notes, almost all of the additions are little bits of extra footage thrown in to pad it to that running time. Only the scene where Chev goes into a store and starts pounding nails into his leg to keep him pumped is something you would recognize as a "deleted scene." The US BD release is, by all definitions, the directors' cut.

Similarly (and I would say shockingly) the MPAA had no cuts for Crank 2, so there's nothing extra to really add for the BD.

Re: Crank on Blu question...

I still want that nails scene, and the longer version of the elevator scene. I kinda wondered if LGF would put out a new DVD/BD to promote Crank 2 but they didn't.
