Looks like this has the resume function. I haven't seen that before on any BDs. A few nights ago, I only watched about the first 15 minutes of Alien. Tonight, I loaded the disc to watch the rest and the menu screen asked me if I wanted to resume play. So I hit yes. Then I selected play from the menu and it put me back where I left off. I hope we see that more often on newer BDs.

I really miss those 70mm film festivals at the Uptown. I believe the last was in the mid 90's. "Alien", "Blade Runner", "Close Encounters", "2001", "2010", Altered States".....I went to see all of them. Fantastic.
Giles, do you remember the Biograph? I saw "Twenty Bucks" there. The only theater it played at. Thankfully I heard about that movie in the City Paper. Such a great little film with such a cool history. I also went to the Key Theater in Georgetown. So many great memories there including "Dial M for Murder" in 3D!! when I saw 'Alien' in 70mm the Uptown's mini 70mm fest also showed 'West Side Story' in 70mm - wow! now that was a unique special experience - when the hell is the bluray release for that coming out (??) the HDNet airing was simply beautiful. Oh I definately remember the Biograph - ahhh memories. The Key was also the best place to see foreign movies and obviousily it was THE place to see the weekend midnight 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. The Georgetown theatre up on Wisconsin Ave. played 'Caligula' for years - I of course was way too young to see it in 1980 The AFI Silver showed 'Dial M for Murder' in 3D in 2005 - but I think they presented in anaglyph (not polarized) - I didn't see it... :( now that's a movie that SHOULD get released in 3D bluray! |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
Alien Resurrection would have been a better movie without Ripley... or rather that idiotic "clone Ripley" that had the memories of the original Ripley and the alien parasite still growing inside of it. Which likewise eliminates that stupid "newborn" thing at the film's climax.
If Sigourney Weaver wanted out of the franchise -- which, considering the end of Alien3, seems kind of obvious -- she should have passed on Alien IV and let it takes its own direction. |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
Wow, Aliens looks fantastic. This is as good, if not better than the 70mm screening I saw. Absolutely badass!

Giles, I actually snuck in to see "Caligula" with a fake ID at the Georgetown Theater. It played there for like a year. I don't even know what else played there before or after. But I went to the Key quite a bit. "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" was there for what seemed like 6 months. I also saw a few Gregg Araki movies there (horrible film maker IMO). And yes, I saw "Rocky Horror" there a few times. I think the very last movie I saw there was "Secrets & Lies". Do you remember the West End Cinemas? Tiniest theaters and screens ever. "Stop Making Sense" played there for over a year (or more). I went to go see that a few times. Even though the screen was small, the sound wasn't too bad. Also saw "Blue Velvet" there. Last, there was a theater in D.C. that play retro double features for years and years. Was it the Inner Circle?? I saw a few movies there. |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
I'm having a weird problem with my set. I've only tried the first two discs. On "Alien" and "Aliens" the theatrical versions play fine, and on the directors' cuts the intro pieces with Ridley Scott and James Cameron play fine. But when the directors' cuts begin to play the video is zoomed way in to the top edge of the picture. You can only see a little bit of the 2 in the 20th Century Fox logo, for example. If I try to switch back to the theatrical cuts, they're zoomed, too. I have to eject the disc and start over to get the theatrical cuts to play the way they should.
This is on an Oppo BDP-83. Has anyone else experienced this issue? |

Do you love the colors teal and orange? I mean, really LOVE them? To the point that you wish that all movies could be colored nothing but teal and orange in every single shot?
Yeah? If so, you're going to adore the Aliens transfer. It's all teal and orange, all the time. |

This is a known problem. After starting the movie, jump back to the Top Menu then restart. If that doesn't work, turn on MU-TH-UR mode, then turn it off again.

Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
I have the Oppo and can confirm that the fix that Josh posted works. It's slightly inconvenient but, at least we don't have to wait for a future firmware update just to be able to enjoy the movies.

Thanks Josh. I hadn't read anything about it. If it's in this thread I some how managed to miss it. I'll try your suggestions later (I'm headed out of town for the weekend).

The Jeffrey Combs stuff from the Fisherman's stuff is great. Never had heard of it prior to this release. I was referring to the Fisherman's Wharf. There is video from a ride they had there which featured Jeffrey Combs. |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
I think one of my favorite features on the set (and bear in mind I've been jumping back and forth between the six discs) are the video dossiers of the Nostromo crew shown during Ripley's trial in Aliens. The amount of detail they put into each bio is extraordinary, and not only is there a neat reference to the Tyrell Corporation, apparently Lambert was born a man.

What is it made out of again and how does it feel when you touch it? (oh man..that sounds dirty already..) |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
The base is hard plastic. The alien/egg is a more thick, pliable plastic. Feels smooth.

Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th

Are the discs held in place similar to the BTTF set, or are there hubs? |
