Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
yes, the KB Fine Arts on M Street down from Dupont Circle showed Aliens in 70mm, I unfortunately went to my neighborhood theatre - KB Paris (in Mazza Galleria) to see Aliens - why? no idea... should have gone down to the Fine Arts.

Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
I saw it in 70mm at film school, it was the final for a sound editing class. We had to watch Aliens in 70 and then write a paper on the 6 channel sound utilized.
I saw it more recently in 35mm at the Egyptian Theater as a double feature with Alien. But if you're saying it's the best you've ever seen, then I'm quite excited to see how it looks. |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
so was the 70mm print include stereo split surround, or in alternate five front/mono surround configurement?
I saw a revival of Alien at the Uptown in 70mm and that sound was unbelivably tension filled. On the bluray I still jumped when the alien hand and arm jutted out from it's hiding space just prior to being jettisoned out into outerspace. |

I saw "Twenty Bucks" there. The only theater it played at. Thankfully I heard about that movie in the City Paper. Such a great little film with such a cool history. I also went to the Key Theater in Georgetown. So many great memories there including "Dial M for Murder" in 3D!! |

And the scene where Ripley is getting into the spacesuit at the end of Alien is my favorite part. Not because of Sigourney in her underwear (which is definitely nice), but because it's pretty much the only time in the entire Alien series that we see one of the xenomorphs just hanging out. He's just laying there, stretching out, yawning, checking out the scenery. It adds a dimension to the creature that has never been otherwise explored. |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
Something I noticed tonight for the first time watching "Aliens" on BD.....Weaver's bush coming out of her tiny underwear when she woke up transporting back to LV-426 with the military. Seriously. I was watching the BD tonight with some friends and they were like "Good God Ripley...wax much!?"

You leave Sigourney Weaver's beaver alone! That bush got her nominated for an Oscar!

I'd like to see that clip from the Oscars. "And the Oscar goes to...Mariel Hemingway!" *upskirt shot of Sigourney Weaver as she claps half-heartedly* |

Reminds me of The Thing, when people were watching it on blu-ray and noticed that Doc Copper had a cock ring. I mean NOSE ring. |
Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
I love the hard board book style packaging but hate the slide in disc idea. Good way to scratch discs. The UK edition is a fold out with plastic housing like the the Quadrilogy set. I hate fold outs but prefer the way the discs are stored.

No idea what the guy is talking about. That scene is very clear. And not dark at all.

News on UK region coding?

Blu-rays have scratch resistant coating. That shouldn't be an issue.
But with this set? When I take the discs out, I don't feel like the underside of the disc is 'scraping' on the under side of the page... because you can lift the disc up a little bit because the page gives you JUST enough leeway to be able to do so. Considering I really hate book style packaging... I have to say that this is probably the nicest boxed set I ever bought... so that says a LOT. |

Not the entire scene. He says the copious amount of blood being spilled and smeared on the glass of the cockpit (after the pilot is attacked by the alien) is no longer visible, due to the transfer of those particular frames being too dark.

Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
So Daniel, thoughts on "Aliens"? I just got done watching "Alien3". Nice transfer, but it's still the worst in the franchise. It just leaves me cold. Nothing exciting about it. I don't blame Fincher. I don't think anyone could have saved this movie. "Resurrection" is far from great. Even far from good. But it's 100,000 times better than "3" (IMO).

Re: Alien Anthology - Oct. 26th
Looks like this has the resume function. I haven't seen that before on any BDs. A few nights ago, I only watched about the first 15 minutes of Alien. Tonight, I loaded the disc to watch the rest and the menu screen asked me if I wanted to resume play. So I hit yes. Then I selected play from the menu and it put me back where I left off. I hope we see that more often on newer BDs.
