'The Descent' on Blu- Any thoughts?

Okay, the forum search function sucks. Seriously. So, if I missed something, I'm sorry.

However, I was considering picking up the BD of 'The Descent' sometime soon. I have been looking for new horror movie to add to my BD collection, and these baby is really cheap right now.

In addition, the couple of reviews I have read have given the audio/video, and even story very high remarks, but I haven't really heard much discussion in these forums (granted, I have not looked until recently). Does anyone here have any thoughts on the movie? I'm not a horror fanatic, but I do love a great horror movie, and today they seem few and far in between.

Thanks,
-Stephen

I liked the flick. Very claustrophobic, like the first Alien.

The BD is beautiful, also.

I thought the movie was stupid, but that's just my opinion. Plenty of others have cherished it. You will probably want to see it for yourself.

I understand the comparison to Alien in that The Descent will make you feel claustrophobic. However, Alien is an all time classic and as far as I am concerned The Descent is a fairly forgettable movie once it is over. It doesn't stay with you. And the ending was also disappointing from my perspective.

I bought this when it came out. Creepy but good film.

As for the actual disc there is a fairly large thread on AVS dedicated to it. There are different versions of the same release floating around. I can only wonder what Lionsgate was doing with this title.

Orderd Descent from CH's recent B1G1 Blu sale. Crossing my fingers I get the AVC version.

Since you seem to collect horror movies, this will make a great addition. Story-wise, not exactly high on originality, but it's a lot of fun. And it's a bunch of hot chicks in cave. I love this BD as it was the first movie I bought and saw when I bought my PS3 in 2007. The disc is greatly loaded with extras as well.

Check the link DthRdrX provided.

In a nutshell, the disc was stealth re-released with an MPEG2 encode. Screenshots at the provided link show a noticeable decrease in grain and some detail in the MPEG2 version from the AVC version.

Since the UPC was never changed it's hard to determine what copy you're getting online. The link provided gives some info on how to determine an AVC if you have your hands on it at retail.

I got lucky at DeepDiscount's local store in IL during their November sale.

Very derivative movie. That said, the execution is fantastic and it is easily the best R-rated horror movie in the last 10 years.

And yeah, the BD looks and sounds fantastic. IMO, it's a safe purchase.

With that said, I thought the MPEG-2 release was the original release and the AVC was the re-release, weird *Shrug*.

Decent flick.

Reminds me of a Supernatural episode from Season 1 where the Winchesters fought a Wendigo.

I would have thought the same thing, as that makes some sense at least, but I got my copy when it was first released and it was in fact the AVC version.

I haven't seen the Blu-ray, but I really liked the movie. I thought it was definitely one of the better horror movies of recent years.

I only have the lowly MPEG-2 version. Haven't seen the AVC one. I think the MPEG-2 version looks fantastic, I can only imagine how much better the AVC one looks.

Is it OOP, or what?

The AVC encode was apparently only released on the first batch or printing of discs. Lionsgate for inexplicable reasons after it was released for a couple of months, used an inferior MPEG-2 encode. Your best bet to get it is to go to a brick and mortar store which has slow-moving stock and still has original Descent BDs. I think a Best Buy or Circuit City in a down-trodden area would be ideal.

Same here, I purchased on the first day, so I'm assuming AVC. Funny how the back of the BD says Region 1.

Received one of my CH shipments today from the B1G1 Blu deal a while back (it's now DEAD). I have the AVC version.

I can confirm a few things. The top spine sticker looks like this:

DESCENT, THE
A020593

And two inserts inside the Blu-ray case. The Blu-ray case with AVC appears to be less round and more square in size.

That code sticker plus the BV style case definitely seem to be the recipe for success.
