Why Don't the Black Bars Go Away?

Why don't "fanatics" realize that there is simply no reason to have black bars? (except for films already filmed/recorded in different aspect ratios) (also except for movies displayed on 4:3 tvs)

All current/new films should fill up the entire Widescreen.

You are not paying attention and clearly did not read the article.

The "fanatical" notion that an image needs to fill up the glass on your tv is old thinking.

So how long before we get "WIDESCREEN" plastered all over our BD releases?

I hope that never happens. It'd be the fullscreen and Lord Of War debacle all over again.

I cringe at the thought of a BD saying FULLSCREEN. Or that stupid "Family Friendly" one.

That was the worst one. And Disney went as far as making Brother Bear a two disc set in order to promote their "Family Friendly" aspect ratios.

Well, we already have gotten some 1.33:1 (or 1.44:1 for IMAX) titles that have been cropped to fill a 16x9 display. However, there doesn't seem to be a lot of opposition to it for some reason.

I'm glad you don't have a say in what actually happens.

Good poit. Perhaps those cases get a pass, so to speak, because the compromised 1.78:1 aspect ratio better emulates the intended effect of the theatrical 1.44:1 aspect ratio than simply pillar boxing the IMAX releases in their original aspect ratio within a 1.78:1 frame.

That said, I would hate to see a film like Casablanca cropped to fit a 1.78:1 screen.

1.66 doesn't fill the entire screen. At least for me, I can see the vertical bars for that Dr. Syn Disney Treasures show.

You guys are actually saying you would rather have a movie not fill up the entire screen and have black bars?

Why can't all movies be filmed in the aspect ratio that would get rid of the black bars?

Black bars don't bother me. I'm usually paying for what is in between them.

Yeah! -- like how all paintings are the exact same size and shape! And books all have chapters the same lengths so they can easily be read while you're on the crapper. And music is all performed in the same key and at the same tempo . . .

Wait . . . what?

Why is SPIDERMAN 2 trailer in 1:85:1 aspect ratio

Can somebody tell me why on the Hellboy bonus dvd, the preview to spiderman 2 is in 1:85:1 aspect ration and in HD? Why isn't the spider-man 2 dvd the same way?

Because Superman (1978) looks better in 2.40:1 whereas Jurassic Park looks better in 1.85:1. If you tried presenting either one in the other's aspect ratio the whole feel for each movie would be ruined.

What makes me laugh is that there's a ton of smartass responses to questions like these - but not one legitimate answer.

You don't consider the link JoshZ provided as a legitimate answer? Or rockshemp and applesandrice's examples for that matter?

Thanks for making fun of me guys! :P

But yeah i have no problem watching movies that have black bars. I've been buying widescreen DVDs for years! Hell if i got a fullscreen movie as a present i would return it for a widescreen!

And yes i read the whole article about black bars by Josh and it was really good and answered my questions but i still would prefer to have my entire WIDESCREEN tv fill up with the movie. But in no way shape or form would i want the filmakers vision of the movie be changed just because i want it to fill up my entire tv.

I just personally find that an HD movie that fills up the entire screen is really nice to look at. But like i said i don't mind looking at black bars at all. I've been doing it for almost 10 years! And the important thing is the movie itself! I really don't think Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark would be any better even if the BD picture would fill the whole screen. heh

And i'm not a freakin J6P! :P

I can assure you that the trailer is not in a 1:85:1 ratio.

Why on earth would you look at the black bars? This is what I have never understood. I don't even notice them. And mine are frickin' huge when they show up .

Please, someone begging for full-wide-screen movies explain why you bother paying attention to "black bars" when there is a movie playing right between them. Maybe you need a bigger subwoofer to reduce distractions. Or better movies.
