Which Blu-ray movies are in 1.85:1?
With the whole black bar subject i started in the Dark Knight thread it got me wondering if there are any movies that actually fill up the entire widescreen HDTV in 1.85:1.
I'm almost sure i saw one before but i can't remember for the life of me which one it was. Thanks! |
A lot.
I don't think you will find someone willing to list them all for you though. I'll give you one, Planet Terror. |
One of the stranger questions I've read in a while. In addition to 1.85 - 1.78, 1.66 also "fill" the entire screen. I doubt you'll see any kind of comprehensive list though. The Dark Knight issue does have me stumped somewhat, only because I was never sure what ratio IMAX was.

Click on this link (Although I should warn you, clicking on this link will most likely give you Cancer of the retina..)

all movies should be like this, f**k those widescreen bars
|
^Me and the entire artistic community beg to differ.

Nice, threads like this show us that BD is entering J6P territory. It might just stick around.
|
Yeah curse those highbrow artsy types for hiding the picture from us!!!!

Maybe flipper discs as well, with half the movie on each side. Might as well go back to 2001.

The Dark Knight 35mm theatrical prints were cropped to a constant 2.40:1. The Blu-ray alternates between 2.40:1 and 1.78:1 (the IMAX footage is cropped to fill the 16:9 screen). |
Cool, thanks Josh for the explanation. I was wondering what the IMAX ratio was to get a better idea of the cropping Nolan had to do to make it fit for home viewing.

Why is it necessary to "fill up" the screen? You are seeing all the image there is.

Hey, I bought a 58" Plasma with 1500 square inches of screen for $3500 which works out to $2.30 per sq inch. I want my money's worth god damn it. You know how much money I'm wasting on a 2.35:1 movie? Neither do I but I'm sure it's substantial.

Although, when part of Grindhouse, it's 2.40:1. I guess he shouldn't hold out for the release of the whole feature in that case.

Someone should create a blu-ray wiki and have categories for stuff like this.
It should also compare the BR version to the standard version. Now would be the time to do it before the library gets too big. |
These threads are good for a laugh. Until you realize it isn't a joke.

Band of brothers
Courage in fire High school music 2-----best picture I ever saw in blu-ray I think all the movie should be 1.85:1 for blu ray release. |

I've never complained about aspect ratios that don't fill up the entire 16:9 screen, so please don't throw me into that group...I'm much closer to being a J6P than I am a film aficionado...but I've always just gone with the flow, figured the filmmakers weren't filming stuff in 2.35:1 or whatever else just to piss people off - but I've never cared enough to actually ask until now - why DO they use certain aspect ratios? I have my guesses, but they are just guesses.
I'm sure it's a fairly simple answer that can be made fairly complex through message board banter? :p Thanks. :) |
