Re: King Kong Blu-Ray-- Is it worth it?

This might be one of the few titles I do the ol' double dip on, mainly because I'm a big fan of the flick, and the HD-DVD looked gorgeous to begin with.

At some point. 1/20 is only a short time away.

I hope this has branching between theatrical and extended because the extended was pretty unbearable.

Have the HD DVD and the Production Diaries, which I've never watched.

Thought the movie was too long in theaters, and never finished the HD DVD because the wife went bonkers and refused to watch past the two-hour mark (might have been the bug scene that did it, which almost did it for me too).

Wouldn't mind owning on BD but have higher priorities right now.

You know the movie seems to keep moving but every time I watch it, by the end I'm thankful I can finally go to bed. Jesus that is one long movie. I'd rather sit through an insurance seminar than an extended version of King Kong. (I really do like the HDDVD) Just not all in one sitting.

You already have two versions of the film that you have never watched! Why on Earth are you even contemplating a third?!

As penance, I instruct you to give the money that you would have spent on shelf-warmer number three to me and I will use it to buy the uncut Australian BD of Casino Royale, which I guarantee you I will watch multiple times. After each viewing, I will email you a note describing what an awesome time I've had and thanking you for using your money to contribute to someone's enjoyment of film.

... since you asked for advice...

The addition of the lossless audio track seals the deal for me. I haven't seen the extended version yet but the theatrical was entertaining. Since they are including both, seems to be no problem.

Got this today. The only new thing besides DTS MA is the Commentary track and a nice slip cover. 35GB more space and that's all Uni could muster?

Does it look any better? Because the HD-DVD is gorgeous. Still contemplating double-dipping (or quadruple dipping when you look at the entire picture.)

Extensive AVS Forum thread on whether this is worse or a match for the HD DVD in terms of image quality. Endless screen shots and opinions... priceless stuff, really. I have to say, give the minor difference I see from those shots... I'd pick this up for the commentary and extended version (although, I'm not sure this entertaining behemoth needs anymore girth).

Yeah, the difference is subtle. While I think it's a little disappointing that they felt the need to add any DNR at all, it's not worth getting worked up about. The BD would still get the nod for the sound.

Is the extended cut actually better? I thought the movie in theaters already felt like an extended edition.

The HD DVD was only a single-layered disc?

It does. Appears to be seamless branching but I've only skipped through some scenes.

I watched the T-Rex battle on HD then BD, both looked the same. AVS has a thread right now but you know how that is...

Kong Kong was a dual layer disc (HD 30). I think it took up about 28 gigs of that space.

Yep, your right I just looked at my HD DVD. I don't know why I thought this was HD15.
