But I didn't have another version on hand to compare, and decided to bring it to the experts here... and totally forgot until now.

This is exactly how I remember the transition from the VHS version. I also recall it looking rather abrupt, but AFAIK that is how that transition goes from the kitchen to them swatting bugs in their neighbors' front doorway.
