Re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

A beautiful lass, raised as a bomb throwing revolutionary from a young age, falls in with a traveling carnival/ burlesque troupe while escaping the authorities in South America. Picaresque adventure follows as she becomes part of the act and they all eventually become pivotal actors in a peasant revolt.

I first saw this on DVD fifteen years ago and was disappointed. Not sure why, but all I recalled from that first viewing was a lot of boring explosions.

It might have been the substantially better presentation this time around, or knowing a little more what to expect going in, or simply being in the right mood, but whatever it was it hit me just right last night. I enjoyed this second viewing immensely.

Very whimsical, cartoonish (in a good way), laced with dry, black humor. At the same time it's impressively staged with hundreds of extras and an excellent use of the mostly unspoiled, natural terrain.

While the film's POV remains fixed on the two leads, the scale of the production around them seems to be channeling the over-stuffed, epic US comedies of the '60's like It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Hallelujah Trail, with some spectacular set pieces in the third act.

Never would have pegged Louis Malle for even attempting something like this. He not only did, he pulled it off extremely well too.

Another case where I'm so glad I gave the material another shot after an indifferent initial viewing,.

Upgrade...holy fucking shit i had no idea what i was in for. it was fun, funny, it was a mystery, it was everything all rolled into one. i'm just in awe. i mean i knew right from the incident in beginning who was behind it (kinda), but i didn't know who dunnit (really), if people who saw know what i mean. i won't spoil here. but this movie was just amazing and so easily rewatchable. Logan Marshall-Green, who i never really knew before was just incredible, acted every way he was supposed to given the circumstances of the movie. i know there is a bigger story and maybe that series they are developing will explore, but for an isolated movie, that ending, i was just in awe. gasping. tense throughout, just an amazing film by Leigh Whannell. and watching the extras on the UK disc, who knew he was Australian. all i saw him in was the original Saw. incredible. just incredible. if you like your atypical superhero movies, this is it. even if you don't, see this fucking movie. it is just so damn good. and love the call out to James Wan who wrote Saw with him. just see this movie. plain and simple.

Re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

The Hitcher (1986)...wow. just wow! i haven't seen this in so long and it is such a great movie. tense, suspenseful, horrific. this blew me away back then and it still blows me away. this is a serial killer movie done incredibly right by Robert Harmon.

The players, C. Thomas and Rutger Hauer were just perfect. this Blu-ray looks fucking fantastic and I haven't seen it look this good since theaters and even that I don't remember at all, but pristine quality. and the sporadic commentary by Hauer, Harmon and Howell is great. Also, one with screenwriter Eric Red which i put on and off and it was good too. But, the main attraction is the 38 minute making of docu with all the main players sans Leigh is fantastic and looks great in HD. i had the UK SE DVD, but never fucking got around to seeing it. it was just so good. to think that Terence Stamp was Harmon's first choice and then Sam Elliot, who dropped out at last minute. and so great that Hauer got it and was just perfect as John Ryder.

this is imo and underlooked at gem. so perfect for it's time, so perfect anytime you want a take you by the balls, action, horror, suspense movie. love it so much. this Blu-ray is a gem and now, one of the best in my collection. sure, it's not loaded with extras, really only the 1 extra and 2 commentaries, but the picture quality and those extras make it one of my favorites and cannot recommend it enough if you love this film.

Re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Black Panther (Blu-ray 3D)...wow. this was like i saw it for the first time, seeing it in 3D. i don't know how this was not shot native 3D. Coogler's shots were made for the 3D image. Wakanda was certainly a wonderland to behold in the 3D format. the depth, the colors, the structures, this is definitely one of the best conversions i've ever seen and again i think Coogler had 3D in mind all along if you look at the long country shots or zooms to up close. just glorious looking shots and glorious looking movie in this medium. and the movie, seeing it now, the first cut scene, really brings the whole message together and is so timely right now. really good movie in the Marvel cannon. no where near the best, but so far in 3D, i think it is.

Re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

To cap off the Doctor Who that we own (at least for now, anyway) we watched The Day of the Doctor (from the 50th Anniversary Special, BD 3D/BD/DVD), followed by a few of the Special Features.

I'm going to miss Doctor Who.
