Steelbooks...Why the interest?
Having never seen a Blu-Ray in a Steelbook Case in person, I don't quite understand all the interest in them. Aren't they the same dimensions as a traditional DVD Case thus making them larger then the slimmer Blu-Ray cases? I don't might the standard Blu-Ray case. You can store more in the same shelf space with slim cases. Plus I like a consistent look.
What am I not getting about the Steelbooks?

Actually, Blu-ray steelbooks are the same size/dimensions as regular Blu-ray cases, though they are a tad (but not much) thicker.
Personally, I don't like them too much only for the fact that the 2-disc steelbooks have overlapping disc storage inside the case and (at least for the DVD steelbooks) the hubs have been a little too tight for my liking.
But I picked up the Iron Man BD steelbook mainly because, well, it's Iron Man and it's a steelbook ... surprisingly, the hubs weren't too tight on the discs at all and the overlapping disc storage (which was slightly different than DVD steelbooks due to the more compact size) wasn't too bad. Plus, only the steelbook had actual disc art on the discs. So win, win, win

Hmmm....I've just moved one step closer to selling my UK Steelbook of that. Just waiting to hear that the PQ/AQ are as good or better on the Paramount release here.
I only got it because it was the only version available. Steelbooks are OK but do not inspire me to hunt them down.

I think we had this question asked before, but for me I think it looks classier. It is sort of like a plastic cup vs. a wine glass. The regular DVD case is just black plastic with another piece of clear plastic on it with a piece of paper stuck in between. The steelbook is one solid piece. I appreciate the artwork. If you are not going to pull it out and look at it or display it, there may not be much of a purpose to it, but even if you just look at the spines, a Hardcover book looks better than a paperback!

definitely in the Steelbook is overrated for me camp. Bottomline is,i'd rather own 2 blu-ray movies than 1 steelbook blu-ray movie for my money.

If you're paying twice as much for a Steelbook, you're doing it wrong. I don't own many Steelbooks, but they all cost me the same or maybe $3 more than the non-Steelbook releases of the movies.

I am utterly baffled by the obsession of people on this board with steelbooks. A couple guys, on their weekly buy lists, buy steelbooks of standard DVDs from all kinds of exclusive places, some even buy regular packaging of a DVD AND the steelbook as well. All that money they are spending just for stupid packaging on a standard DVD, when they could go Blu for all that money. Me I love movies, the PQ & audio quality are far more important, than a steelbook that is just going to sit on my shelf. I have people over to watch movies at my place, not to stare at what kind of package my Blu/DVD is in.

They don't do anything for me, I don't own any. But I collect other things, so I can certainly understand the collector instinct and the appeal these must have to some people. By it's nature, a hobby is a way to spend your time and money on something that others may thing is dumb and frivolous. I'd never tell anyone they were wasting time and money hunting down steelbooks, if they get enjoyment out of them, that's fine.

To be honest, I'm not really crazy about Blu-ray Steelbooks. I only have the Sweeney Todd Steelbook because it was the only way to get the film on Blu-ray, at the time.
BUT, I do like to collect the SD Steelbooks.

I like steelbooks, no other reason.
Now aren't people who complain about consistency and symmetry on their shelves just as "obsessed"?

Steelbooks are largely a new release edition and disappear (mostly) during the high price initial first three to five weeks of a release. The content in Steelbooks is almost always identical to the regular edition. I don't buy movies during this period. I wait for deeper discounts that invariably follow afterwards. So, to me, Steelbooks are an expensive indulgence -- often costing twice what I ultimately pay for a title.

I like movies not movie cases, so I don't get it either. Just a case of collector mentality getting enjoyment out of something apart from the movie itself, I guess.

I do collect steelbooks and I love it and guess what I like Digibooks as well even if they're sized wider and higher. Some peoples collect stamps or money, I collect Steelbooks and Digibooks (BD & HD-DVD only) so why those Steelbooks hater want to understand why we like it? Like you just said those who cares that much about consistency on their shelves are obssessed too...
My 2 cents.

I really don't care about Steelbooks much at all. I would say I don't get the obsession, but then again, I know there are probably things about me that people would say the same thing about. I guess the only thing that really gets me is that I know there are people who will buy a movie just because it's on Steelbook, regardless if they like the movie or not. I can't fathom spending money on a movie you don't like just for the packaging (not calling anyone in particular out on this).
The only reasons I would get a Steelbook is if it was the only way to get it, if there was some exclusive content that I was really interested in or if it were the cheaper option.

it's a collectors thing right? or they could be for movie enthusiasts.
if you love a particular movie, you might want a nice version/edition of that movie. steelbooks are the most aesthetically pleasing editions of dvds to me.
some people don't care if they have a pirate copy of their favourite film on a blank disc. others don't mind downloading their films. some people want collectors editions/ limited editions.
so what's not to understand about people liking steelbook editions?
