You're really reaching here. I was comparing dvd to VHS, and in all those categories, dvd easily trumped vhs - and the only place where BD easily trumps dvd is A/V. That's the issue.

I think you will find that our memories are long enough to know that there will be double dips coming.

We won't bother buying barebones Blu-rays of films like Terminator, Terminator 2, and Robocop because we've been trained (by the pattern of DVD releases) to know that better editions of the movies will come out later. Especially true when we know - thanks to DVD special editions - that the special features already exist.

I don't believe any of us have anything to worry about. The studios and manufacturers have already invested a lot in Blu-ray and it is significantly better than DVD. Consumers will choose Blu-ray even if it takes a while. No one will want to drop support of a superior format. Even though studios are primarily looking for money out of this they won't want to stop supporting a format that is better than DVD. Enough of us already have noticed Blu-ray that to stop production would be ridiculous. And, no, I don't believe downloads will over-take the sale of physical media. For one, I think it would be too confusing for a lot of less tech-savvy people.

Why have 5 pages of debate over whether some guy at Samsung said Blu-Ray would last 5 years? Although this person is clearly in the industry, it's one person's opinion. What were the range of opinions of those in the industry five years before HD media launched? It really amazes me at how little gets people so worked up in this forum.

This is kind of the point I made before - who cares what this guy thinks? Samsung already lost a lot of credibility over how they handle their players in general.

After 50+ years of living, I've heard a lot of predictions and there's one thing I can say about them. Making predictions is easy, being right is something else.

Particularly as regards technology. One would think, all things considered, that tech predictions would be far easier and more accurate than in the days of reading pig entrails.

But nooooo.

I'm still waiting for my flying car.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict movies will no longer be released in SD DVD format by 2016.
