Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Wachowski brothers film 'Speed Racer' to Blu-ray on September 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This three-disc set will feature the main feature and supplemental features on the first disc, the DVD game "Speed Racer Crucible Challenge" on the second disc, and a digital copy of the film on the third disc - the last two being exclusive to the Blu-ray release.

Video will be presented in widescreen 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras for this release include:

Spritle in the Big Leagues
Explore the cars and tracks used in the film and see how the heart-pounding races were created without using a single car.

Earlier this year, Warner indicated that they would release The Matrix films on Blu-ray to coincide with the release of 'Speed Racer' as they are all Wachowski brothers films. Warner yet to make that announcement, but hopefully we will hear something very soon.
Speedracer was quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. I felt like I was having a seizure the whole time.

no it wasn't. only 30% of Warner's HD DVDs had lossless audio according to hddvdstats.com.

At the start Warner produced a ton of DD+ releases and then after that they were pretty much TrueHD to the end.

Even if we go with 30% (which is probably not right), That would mean even less of % of Warner Blu-rays had TrueHD/PCM (unless the 20 or so odd "exclusive" HD DVD titles are counted against them).

Regardless, there is no reason why they should have stopped TrueHD/PCM tracks right after they pumped out their last neutral title (Twister).

Warner has taken Fox's place as worst BD studio. It boggles my mind how they continue to butcher the presentations.
I'm sure the lossless budget for Speed Racer went towards buying cookie cutters for Christmas Story!

They ended the format war to release the worst product possible?
It's been confirmed that The Perfect Storm will have TrueHD audio. The cover art that's been floating around showing DD 5.1 is outdated. It also received a new 1080p transfer.

On a side note, WB thought it was a good idea to give One Missed Call a TrueHD audio track, but not Speed Racer. Yep, that makes perfect sense.

Hell, the Dirty Harry movies got TrueHD and most of those were filmed in mono.

take a look at the releases sorted by release date (you'll have to filter for Warner manually):
http://hddvdstats.com/index.php?OrderBy=Date

there were definitely more DD+ titles at the beginning and more TrueHD titles near the end, but there were plenty of both sprinkled throughout the whole lifespan of HD DVD, including DD+ on late day and date titles like Michael Clayton and The Assassination of Jesse James.

Even if we go with 30% (which is probably not right)
why wouldn't it be right? i don't necessarily think that site is 100% accurate, but it ought to be close enough to give us +/- 5%.

That would mean even less of % of Warner Blu-rays had TrueHD/PCM (unless the 20 or so odd "exclusive" HD DVD titles are counted against them).
according to blu-raystats.com, of the Warner Blu-ray releases since Twister, six have had DD, and six have had TrueHD. this does not take into account announced titles, of course, but 50% lossless matches their overall percentage of BDs with lossless.

Regardless, there is no reason why they should have stopped TrueHD/PCM tracks right after they pumped out their last neutral title (Twister).
they didn't. given the actual available data, there is no correlation between the amount of titles lacking lossless and Warner's exclusivity or neutrality. in fact, there seems to be very little rhyme or reason to their decisions to provide lossless audio or not and it's been that way since well before they went Blu-ray exclusive.

Doesn't really boggle the mind. I made a post the other day on another site which calculated that the film only needed another $425m in worldwide grosses to be profitable.

But instead of complaining that Warner is wasting money on doohickeys for other BD releases, I'd just like to come back to this one, which devotes two whole platters to a stupid game that you probably won't play and a Digital Copy that you probably won't use.

Doesn't Blu-ray hold like a billion terabytes of information or something? Forget the fact that there's hardly enough in this release to justify 3 discs, they're not even trying to take advantage of the benefits offered by Blu-ray. But I guess it all has to come down to marketing, as it's easier for them to charge $35 for a 3-disc set than a single disc with the same exact content. People will catch on and it'll just be another bit of short-sighted bullshit from these studios that will eventually fuck themselves in the end.

I'm not fond of the 3 discs either. But 2 of the discs are DVD. Most people don't have BD drives yet to play the game or extract the digital version.

They couldn't just slam it onto the BD.

First off, has anyone other than Digital Bits confirmed this information with Warners?

Secondly, don't you think it might be a good idea to actually, you know, watch the disc before declaring that it's been "butchered"?

Highdefdigest says it'll be on a BD50 and have TrueHD:

Maybe Peter Bracke and Bill Hunt could have a death match or something to settle this. My money's on Bracke . . .

This just in from Sir William:
Okay folks... I've got some very good news for you all. I've been having conversations with senior personnel at Warner Home Video this morning, about all this panic and concern regarding the rash of Blu-ray Disc titles recently announced with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio only and also set to be released on BD-25s rather than BD-50s. As you all know, this is a legitimate issue to be concerned about, because it directly reflects the potential A/V quality of the release, and Warner's commitment to the format. The titles in question at the moment are Blow, L.A. Confidential and Speed Racer, all of which were indicated to be BD-25s with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio only in the press releases. And here's the good news: Warner's senior catalog team has confirmed to me directly that Blow and L.A. Confidential at least are actually being released on BD-50s with Dolby TrueHD audio. I'm awaiting a similar update on Speed Racer. It seems that incorrect information has been finding its way into the recent press releases for these titles (and the studio's press website) - a situation which we presume is going to be rectified. Warner is absolutely aware of all your concerns over this (I expressed them directly to the studio myself, and Warner has been monitoring the discussion groups as well), and they asked me to let everyone know that they get it, they understand the concerns and they're 100% committed to quality on Blu-ray. I was told just moments ago, in fact, that the intention is for all Warner catalog titles to feature lossless audio and for all previously-released DVD extras to carry over to the Blu-ray editions if at all possible. Like I said, I'm still waiting to hear more regarding Speed Racer and new release BD product in general, but the news on the catalog side is all good: Blow and L.A. Confidential ARE BD-50s with Dolby TrueHD audio. So for all those of you who've been sending me understandably angry or concerned e-mails about this issue, you can now rest easy on that score at least.

Based on Warner's past releases, it is perfectly within our right to bitch about this.

Confirmed to be DD only on BD-25 by Bill Hunt via direct contact with WB.

WTF is the matter with them? I'm getting pissed to the point where I will stop buying their discs altogether.

I was going to blind buy this but now it's a rental....maybe.

This is utter bullshit! Speed Racer was made to be demo material for Blu-ray. What the hell are they thinking over there at Warner? Warner has slipped to the bottom of the barrel when it comes to quality as of late.
I also went ahead and cancelled my pre-order with Warner Home Video.

Well, this sucks. While cheap from the Warner site and the 30% code, I'm really considering canceling as well, and I like the dang movie!

I guess this is my punishment for not making it out to see the movie in DLP.
