From blu-ray.com:

"According to various retail sources, on average, 20% of all 'Iron Man' discs that were sold last week were on the Blu-ray format. For Internet-based stores, that percentage climbed to an astounding 50%. While final unit sales data has yet to be reported, it is expected that 'Iron Man' is the highest selling Blu-ray yet.

Oddly enough, Paramount Home Entertainment has yet to make an official statement on the sales data, but one thing is for sure: If 'Iron Man' hasn't already broken the 1 Million units sold barrier yet, it will likely do so by the end of the year."

Mr. Cinema 10-09-08 08:02 AM

"As the markets were tumbling, Iron Man posted the strongest first-week sales tally of any new release this year, with distributor Paramount Home Entertainment selling 7.2 million DVDs and more than 500,000 Blu-ray Discs."

"Day one Blu-ray Disc sales alone amounted to 260,000 units, a single-day record, according to Paramount."

Bodes well for the Dark Knight on Blu I think.

Wow! Pretty damn good. After that we have The Dark Knight....Oh man

And for those at home keeping track, that "20% of DVD!" went down to about 7%.

Mr. Cinema 10-09-08 11:07 AM

For reference, The Matrix sold 780,000 copies on dvd during its first week.

wewantflair 10-09-08 11:12 AM

New Math:

7=20

Gotcha.

jiggawhat 10-09-08 08:22 PM

The Dark Knight will be the first million seller for a week's timeframe. That's my prediction.

I'll take that bet.

Those at home keeping track, Iron Man BD made up 17% of total sales. That's pretty close to 20%.

And if it made 17% of DVD sales it would be at well over the 1 Million Mark of Iron Mans sold on BD vs the 7.2 Million on DVD...which is wrong. So again, we have yet another time where we play the game of "who do we believe!'. I'll go ahead and take the best most people will want to believe the 17% vs. 7% even though we got the "Iron Man sold more than 500k copies" a few days ago.

Posted just a day ago:

So I gotta know how 500k jumped to 1.2+ million in the course of a single day.

How do those numbers jive?

500,000 Blu-ray discs / 7,700,000 Blu-ray + DVD ~= 6.5%

The percentage in the BD Market Share chart must be based on dollars spent, not units sold as I guess many of us thought.

The only possible thing I can think of is if Nielsen is using shipped numbers instead of sold numbers for the %. But even then, you would figure they shipped far more DVD version then Blu-ray (especially after having to go back and re-do them all thanks to the problem they had a few weeks ago).

Adam Tyner 10-10-08 12:52 PM

If I'm doing the math correctly, Paramount would've had to have been off by almost a million Blu-ray discs.

If the number of DVDs sold is correct -- 7.2 million -- Paramount would've had to have sold right at 1.5 million Blu-ray discs for HD to make up 17% of the total. Maybe that's possible -- I have no idea -- but when a company's initial statement says 500,000, for the actual number to be 3X larger is certainly bizarre.

That...makes a hell of a lot of sense.

Well they did say "More than 500k"

With the random pricing the DVD had, I'm inclined to believe Jim is right, the 17% is revenue, which would be right sense the 1 Disc DVD could be had as low as $9.99-$14.99 while the BD was at least $25 everywhere.

They could be off with a couple of more million units on the DVD sales as well. Day one for Iron Man on Blu-ray was reported at around 260 000 units. To reach the numbers mentioned by Nielsen the BR must have sold at approximately the same pace for the remaining days of the sales week - improbable but not impossible.

Gizmo 10-10-08 01:23 PM

So you are saying Iron Man 250k copies per day for seven days?

pro-bassoonist 10-10-08 01:36 PM

What I am trying to reveal to you is that an incorrect BD sales numbers, as Paramount announced them, are just as likely as incorrect SDVD numbers. This seems to be evading a few minds here as a possibility.

I disagree with it being worthless. If you sell 300,000 widgets for $5 each for a total revenue of $1.5 million and you sell 1 million wadgets for $1 each, which one is more significant to your business? The one that generates $1.5 million in revenue vs. $1 million or the one that sells 1 million units vs. 'only' 300,000? (Note: I realize blu-ray revenue wasn't greater than DVD revenue in the real world case.)

Whether the 17% number is a percentage of sales dollars or units sold, it's still good news for the hobby we all share.

chanster 10-10-08 04:44 PM

Can I ask a serious question here? How can you with a straight face put a title that is exclusively available on Blu Ray and say that it is selling at 100% at DVD sales? What the hell??? And yea I see the asterik, but putting a percentage next to it, implying it is selling at 1 to 1 with DVD is just plain false

Jim (and all) I deleted my first response, because I thought you were talking about the pie chart. So thats the explanation..I was wrong.

darkside 10-10-08 04:46 PM

I've known that chart is faulty since the first time it was used. What I would like to see is real BD growth around me. I was the first person I knew that got into DVD, but within a year it grew big time among my friends and family. I was also the first person to get HD DVD and BD in 2006. It is nearly 2009 and no one in my family or among my friends has bought into HD video. I even know people with PS3s and none of them have bought a single BD disc. I keep thinking next year will be the year, but with the ecomony down it isn't looking good.

Dear Lawd, did anyone else note the drop-off from #1 to #2 on the left-side chart?
