Argh. Did you get that from a review somewhere? Oh well, I can get the DVD version and the case is the same.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Confirmed on the Criterion Forum. This release is the reason I'm getting a region-free Blu-ray player, much as MoC's Nosferatu spurred me to get a region-free DVD player back in 2007.

From the Amazon listing I linked to:

- 150-minute reconstructed and restored 2010 version (including 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world)
- Wraparound embossed sleeve
- Pristine new HD transfer (1080p on Blu-ray)
- New 2010 symphony orchestra studio recording of the original 1927 Gottfried Huppertz score in 5.1
- Newly translated optional English subtitles as well as the original German intertitles
- Full-length audio commentary by David Kalat and Jonathan Rosenbaum
- Die Reise nach Metropolis (2010, 53 minutes), a documentary about the film
- 2010 re-release trailer
- 56-page booklet featuring archival interviews with Fritz Lang, a 1927 review by Luis Buñuel, articles by Jonathan Rosenbaum and Karen Naundorf, and restoration notes by Martin Koerber, and more!

I bolded the stuff on there that's exclusive to the UK. I'm just guessing that the 50 minute doc is the same on the Kino release.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Kino has this:

Blu-ray Features:

* Original 1927 score by Gottfried Huppertz, performed by the Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra, Berlin, conducted by Frank Strobel presented in DTS HD Master Audio 5.1
* Limited Edition Collectible 3-D Lenticuar Box Packaging
* HD Video: 1920 x 1080p
* “Voyage to Metropolis,” a 50-minute documentary on the making and restoration of the film (presented in HD)
* Interview with Paula Felix-Didier, curator of the Museo del Cine, Buenos Aires, where the missing footage was discovered
* 2010 re-release trailer
so....only missing is the interview w/ the curator in Argentina. Wonder how long that one is cuz if that was the person that found (for some reason I doubt that) it....that's pretty fucking cool.

I guess UK all the way, eh?

I feel dismayed to pass on the UK one, but can't play it.

I'd like to note amazon raised the price on the Kino. Was hoping they'd lower to $25, doesn't look like that will happen soon.

Why? I saw a different list of specs (much shorter), so based on that list, the US is missing the commentary but that's it. It's a trade-off (UK has the commentary, US has the interview) but it doesn't seem as "instant decision" as you're making it out to be.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

The commentary to me edges out the interview...of course..this is me assuming it's a good commentary. I didn't mean to make it an instant decision but most interviews as features don't really last long...or as long as I'd want I should say. I'm at the moment split much like I was w/ Waltz With Bashir...get the commentary from US or get the making of from the UK.

In that case..I got the UK.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Waltz with Bashir though at the moment is dirt cheap from amazon.co.uk and also has deleted scenes not on the US edition - no contest there. As for the commentary on Metropolis - I always like reading Jonathan Rosenbaum's film review/essays - so it's an easy decision as well.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

You never know though...his commentary might be boring..and a boring commentary is never a good thing. I want more details on that interview. ATM though...UK BD has the win....

Plus a not-insubstantial 56-page booklet. MoC's booklets are always fantastic.

Got that one ordered. Also was lucky enough to see the Alamo Drafthouse screening at the Seaholm Power Plant here in Austin.

Just got an email from Amazon saying this has been delayed. I can't find a date, but the estimated arrival is December 06 2010 - December 10 2010.

Looks like I had the free shipping. It still usually only takes a day or two longer than the standard.

Yes.

Also, the Paula Felix-Didier interview should be good. She appeared at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival last summer along with a film fan who had for years pursued rumors that a longer cut of Metropolis was held by her museum.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

I don't know why Kino is calling this is 'The Complete Metropolis' when it technically should be titled 'The Almost (But Still Not Quite) Complete Metropolis' whereas MoC edition simply has 'remastered and restored'

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

I can't believe the Kino blu-ray doesn't have a commentary track. Lang scholar, David Kalat is an amazing commentarian, who would've been happy to record one if they couldn't use the one that MoC is using. What a bunch of shit.

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

It figures... The Kino release is region-free while the MOC release is Region B locked.

It got my hopes up when I read that the Kino was region-free a couple of days ago.

Sigh...

MoC reluctantly region-locked their edition due to a prior agreement with Kino, with both parties agreeing to lock their discs to their respective regions. Kino didn't, royally screwing MoC. Now Kino claims that the whole thing was an "authoring error" on their part. Regardless, the damage is done. Read all about it!

Re: Metropolis (KINO)

Well, on the bright side, maybe this will get MoC to no longer region-lock their blu-rays.
