The picture is phenomenal and the audio is top notch.

That sounds cool! Makes me want to test it out tonight or tomorrow.

So, has anyone who has seen the Blu version on a 50" or larger HDTV noticed the movie has less grain? Was the grain just cleaned up, versus an actually better video release?

I can't answer your question directly, but I noticed that the DLP presentation in the theater displayed grain, yet the HiDef airing on cable removed the grain... go figure.

If I looked really hard on my 58", I could sometimes find a little grain. For the most part there's nothing.

Also, the HUD is kinda cool and gives me another reason to watch.

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi 09-05-08 09:47 PM

Actually, it might just be me, but it seems like the film grain's pretty much removed in scenes with the robots. In other scenes like when the humans are all upstairs in Sam's bedroom, before the agents come, there's much more grain.

Drexl 09-05-08 09:49 PM

Oh, please don't tell me this is another DNR victim.

Nah, there were no waxy faces to speak of.

RockyMtnBri 09-05-08 10:39 PM

I watched this on my 92 inch screen - intentional film grain is there, but nothing as far as artifacts go.

DVD Polizei 09-05-08 11:53 PM

Well, I have the HD DVD version, and the small amount of grain is certainly there (as discussed in other DNR threads), but I was wondering if anyone thinks it's "cleaner" or whatever on the Blu-ray version since they've upgraded/cross-graded to the Blu version.

Gizmo 09-06-08 01:17 AM

I believe the consensus is the BD and HD have identical PQ (or close to it) even after Bay made a big stink over it.

RocShemp 09-06-08 12:21 PM

I just watched my BD copy and the video is identical. I'm watching this on a 52" screen and there's a whole lot of grain on both the BD and HD DVD (which is exactly how the film looked the five times I saw it in theaters).

The audio, on the other hand has improved. But it's not a night and day change. Although the TrueHD track is superior (the bass is fuller and the sound somewhat less bright overall), I'd still call the DD+ reference quality.

The only reasons to get this release is if you don't have the HD DVD or you want a slight improvement in terms of audio. I definitely fit into the latter but YMMV.

So if we want the $10 rebate for those with the SD version, we get to cut up the plastic slipcover it came in? Not only that but it's not even at the very top edge so we get to cut it up even worse.

I'm gonna use my small cutting mat and a book to fill out the sleeve and then use my X-acto knife. Hopefully it will be a clean process.

Question: Where is the PoP on the Transformer DVD packaging that has the transformable case?

Yea, but the UPC will suffice for the rebate...

The improved audio is not going to draw me in at that price point so I will stick with the HD DVD of this one. Doesn't seem there were many if any films crippled on the HD DVD format. Despite what people like Bay claimed.

critterdvd 09-07-08 03:56 PM

I want to purchase the blu-ray, but I Just can't justify it when I already have the two-disc which looks amazing when up-converted on the PS3

Mr. Cinema 09-07-08 04:26 PM

The BD blows away the DVD upconverted.

Yup, there is no comparison.

mzupeman2 09-07-08 07:05 PM

Yeah, I found the SD transfer to be darker than what I was seeing on both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. It leaves out so much detail. It's not like watching Star Wars Episode III upconverted, I was actually fairly disappointed in the Transformers SD-DVD release.

Also, don't forget about the $10 MIR. I used that to justify my purchase, after selling my 2 disk DVD for almost nothing.

Mr. Cinema 09-08-08 07:31 AM

If you're a fan of the film, it is a no-brainer to own Transformers on BD. This is a title that makes full use of 1080p, lossless audio, and interactivity. If you're trying to convince someone to upgrade to HD, this is a disc to have handy.

If I just had the SD instead of the HD DVD I would definately jump for the upgrade. On frequently rewatched films, which this is one, I definately want HD. It's just that with over 1000 movies I can't upgrade everything.

DVD-r's definately
1st gen SD DVD, non-anamorphic bare bones discs - definately
SD DVD - as long as the movie is the same (extended version, Director's cut etc.) Yes I will, however I won't in cases like Die Hard 4, Pearl harbor, or ID4 where a preferable version of the film is on SD and not yet on the BD
SD DVD super deluxe box sets - possibly at some point
HD DVD - not for a very long time

From blu-ray.com:

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed that they will release its first BD-Live feature - a video called "Robot Ninjas' - for the 'Transformers' Blu-ray on September 30th. The video will focus entirely on the battle between Bumblebee and Barricade, showcasing home videos and animatics gathered from the film's stunt crew.

The second BD-Live feature, called "What Effing Happened in Mission City", is coming soon. It is also expected that Paramount will use the BD-Live features on 'Transformers' to promote the sequel, which is filming now.

. . . and I don't suppose these will be available through the HD DVD version, will they?

Gizmo 09-24-08 09:57 AM

Yeah, its great to see Paramount now giving a shit about it. Sad that the HD DVD version was out for months (before Paramount went Blu) and they didn't add anything. One month after the Blu-ray launches they add something.

Anyway...I have yet to 'log on" to any HD DVD recently...anyone with the HD DVD Transformers check to see if they changed the "homepage" to say anything about Blu-ray? If so, HD DVD owners should be able to access the same thing.

bunkaroo 09-24-08 02:09 PM

I would guess the feature may have been ready for deployment on the HD DVD side, but then shit happened. Probably made sense to hold it back until the Blu release after that.

Finally, we get to see Megan topless!

I'm just speculating, since I can't imagine them hiring her based on "talent" that may have come out in an audition.

I'm sure this was a one on one audition with Michael Bay.

Nice to see a studio still updating features on old titles, but I wonder how much of that will be available online at various sites anyway.

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that on June 16th, they will make new content available for owners of the 'Transformers' Blu-ray via the BD-Live network. The content will also be available to DVD owners, but only by purchasing new, special marked packages with an access code for the Transformer's micro-site.
Shouldn't be too tough to find the code on the internet.

It's great to see some major support for BD-Live finally. And it's not all just fluff.

Couldn't they have just released most of that stuff on the actual disc? That is going to be a shitload of downloading to be able to watch all of that. It is nice they're doing it but why hold on to so much stuff?

Re: Transformers [Blu-Ray] - September 2, 2008

If they re-release it, people will complain about a double-dip. They put all the extras on BD-Live, people complain about downloading.

They can't win.

Most of this stuff I would venture to guess that they had before they even released the BD version. They should have slapped that stuff on that release and then put the Transfomers 2 related stuff up via BD Live.
