Some movies aren't worth waiting forever to come out on blu-ray esp the older ones, but some just dont need to be in blu. For instance, is it really necessary to watch Ghost or Music and Lyrics in blu-ray? But movies like The Chronicles of Narnia was worth the wait for blu.

When I first got into HD DVD last December my plan was to only buy SD DVDs for those films not distributed by Paramount or Universal. And that's exactly what I did until I got into Blu-ray in January. Since then, I've completely sworn off SD DVDs (made an exception for the Robocop: Anniversary Edition steelbook DVD since it still held an advantage over the Blu-ray, in terms of content and packaging, and the BD transfer wasn't a whole lot of an improvement ... and it was damn cheap!). The funny thing is my hi-def collection is actually growing at a faster rate than my DVD collection was (by a whopping 500%!).

I buy SD titles like they're candy - granted if there is a HiDef version I'll buy it, but for some titles like say, um, some Fox titles where there are more extras on the standard dvd edition, than I'll opt for the dvd version.

The Tudors - S1 (no reason to import the UK BD version of this)
Two-Lane Blacktop (Criterion)
Several History Channel or PBS documentaries (probably will never see BD release)

If you wait a week or so after its release date and you're bound to find used copies of the movie on DVD for $5-$10. If you're a good bargain hunter, you could probably find new copies for a little or around that price.

People can buy what they want, but if you're going to go Blu I don't understand why you wouldn't buy the current releases you want to own on the format if they are available. I'd want the release of the film that I wanted to own with the best possible A/V quality.

I still buy plenty of SDVD because some movies aren't high def material or have a BD counterpart. By not high def material, I don't feel like Juno, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Robocop are BD worthy. They look beautiful upconverted. Now I'm happy Criterion is BD in October, but some things like Demension Extreme, TV, or older films aren't yet on BD.
I just feel, as of right now, to buy the movies that are going to be just awesome on BD like (for me) I am Legend, AVP-R, Narnia, and things like Juno are just fine on SDVD.

I still purchase a few SD DVDs, primarily Criterions (even though I'm holding on any new purchases until their first batch of BDs come out in October) and TV shows on DVD. I also picked up the Savages and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly recently (as well as There Will be Blood, but I've since sold that off).

Purchased a shitload of SD DVDs recently. These are films primarily from the 80's and films I highly doubt will get the Blu-ray treatment anytime soon, and, I can certainly wait for them to be released on HD as well.
Blu-ray still has a long long way to go to complete anyone's movie collection (assuming you have around 500+ movies). So for me, SD DVDs are just as popular as they ever were, baby.
When I get a Blu-ray player later this fall or winter, I'll be buying recent movies in HD, but for the most part, my older title purchases will be SD DVD unless there is a Blu-ray release which is proven superior.

I am still buying SDs but at a considerably, considerably slower rate. If anything, that is what I thank Blu-Ray for, staving off my habit. A lot of my movie watching involves showing the movies to my friends, so if I think I'm going to do that a lot then I will get them in standard-def, but usually in these cases there is no choice.
