My 60GB can be loud as well. It's kinda random, it's not very consistent either. Sometimes its during movies, sometimes games, and sometimes not.

I agree, it's kind of a silly list.
If I were looking for a reason not to use a PS3 as my BluRay player (if I even had BluRay, which I likely won't until HDTV sets get really cheap), it would probably be "not wanting to give Sony more money due to their anti-consumer (rootkitting your computer in the name of DRM!) and anti-competitive (killing off highly-respected Asian console exporter Lik-Sang by filing separate lawsuits in every country in Europe) practices."

#1 is the only issue for me. After I showed my babysitter how to use the UR, she called later to ask how to play a DVD (my oversight).

Hey Now!
I didn't say we threw it out!
(We're Green, We're Green! well, kinda...anyway.)
We've still got the 'parts' in a bag.
With respect to the OP, I just figured it was the best way to eliminate that BLASTED 'Six Reasons' list ONCE and for ALL!

Hey, D! I've gotta try that!
I just recently bought Treesa a Cuisanart that can make milk shakes out of bricks, so the PS3 should be NO-PROBLEMO!
But wait! Just moments ago I heard a knock on the door and it was none other than our UPS guy with my pre-ordered National Treasure 1 & 2 from Amazon!
(For a Grand Total of $6.89 BTW (for 2nd Day Shipping) using some of my HD-DVD Promo Certificate!
)
So, maybe I'll just wait on the 'blend' as I think I can spit & tape & jerry-rig the parts together just long enough to watch the movies.

The only one of these with any real merit is the power issue. 170w vs 25 watts is a HUGE difference, and does anyone know WHY the difference is so huge? Is it just typical Sony arrogance, or is there a justifiable technical reason?
And, for those who think it's just "a few cents", get a clue. It works out to $5 to $10 more per month, assuming only modest usage. At year's end, wouldn't you rather that $100+ in wasted energy went toward five or six extra Blu-Ray discs instead of to the power gods?

BTW, the Xbox 360 uses about as much power as the PS3. The Wii, by comparison, only uses about 17-20 watts.

I have used a standalone Blu-ray player and it is worthless. Apparently it takes 170W to run Blu-ray correctly. That article is completely without merit. I have used my PS3 heavily for over a year as my main movie player and game console and it hasn't worn out and certainly isn't loud enough to hear during a movie.
Best player on the market and I love the bluetooth remote for it.

Horrible list. Universal remote? Don't care. Hard to navigate? Only if you've never used a game console in your life.
As for complaint #5...to counter that, does any other Blu-ray player utilize Folding@home?

Same here. I hate IR. I wish we could get away from it completely. It should all be RF or bluetooth. Fuck line of site.
and IMO, anyone that concerned with the power consumption of a damn movie player has a serious screw loose. Either use it and be happy or go live like the goddamn amish.

The PS3 is the best video player I own for Blu-Ray and network streaming (second best upconverter to the XA2). For $15 bucks, it works with my Harmony! If you're putting a disc in, just hit the damn power button

I don't think people are concerned about the power the unit consumes while it is being operated. They are concerned with how much energy it utilizes "at rest." I think this is a realistic concern, with energy costs exponentially increasing, but it is not one that turning off the power strip when you are done playing a disc won't cure.

couldn't let this garbage stand at it is...
anyone not concerned for energy consumption in general has some seriously loose screws (to use a phrase at hand...).
"we" need this planet, this planet doesn't need us.
and no, I'm not some amish (owning XA2, PS3, projector and much more power consuming stuff),
but that doesn't mean I have to waste it if there is no need to.

That is a huge difference in power consumption between the PS3 and other stand alones, then. I am sure as time goes on, Sony will incorporate the different chipsets and digest the whole machine and that should make it a little less power consuming.
