Hmmm, that is a little surprising. I would have expected Criterion to roll out 5-6 a month, based on their initial (seemingly) enthusiastic support of the format.

Now I wonder, if the reception to the November BD titles is tepid, will they continue to release additional titles in the future?

Maybe they want to see how the first 5 sell?

I'm only in for Bottle Rocket and maybe The Man...

It could be that Blu-ray production is tied up right now with all the big holiday blockbusters (The Dark Knight, etc.). Might be harder for a smaller studio to get in the queue. I'd expect more announcements next year, as long as the initial titles do well.

That's what I think it is. They want to gauge the interest and adjust their schedule accordingly.

They're releasing the all-time most requested Criterion on blu-ray so the turnout probably has to be huge for them to continue.

^^ That's what I was thinking. None of the titles announced so far are what I would describe as Criterion's most requested titles. That's not to say they aren't great movies. For what it's worth, I'm in for all of them. Even nicer that I'm getting a couple free from the Amazon buy 2 get 1 free mess up a while back.

Besides, if we were getting the most requested, Good Burger would be on the way.

Actually, I think he was referring to Bottle Rocket.

Bottle Rocket? Its been heavily requested and will probably sell the best out of the bunch (being a bit more mainstream) but I think a title like Brazil would sell a bit better.

That was my guess because it's from Criterion "regular" Wes Anderson and the 1998 DVD must be lackluster by today's standards. I don't think he was considering titles that were already released (like The Third Man) or that Criterion probably couldn't license.

I suppose he could have meant Chungking Express though.

Of course it's Bottle Rocket. How can anyone deny that it's the single most requested title? I think someone from Criterion confirmed that it was. I'm not talking about what's already been released by Criterion.

I can't see Brazil being the most requested Blu-ray. But that's just me.

I'm honestly shocked that Bottle Rocket is the most requested title Criterion has yet to release, given how utterly embryonic it is compared to all of Wes Anderson's other movies. And I'm especially shocked given how many truly great films haven't gotten the Criterion treatment.

Mallrats?

While I like Bottle Rocket I would much rather have Rushmore, Royal Tennebaums or Life Aquatic over it on Blu-ray right now. It does makes sense though with the DVD coming out.

You have to put it into perspective. Not everyone is going to be clamoring for The Mother and the Whore or Vivra Sa Vie. The fans have asked for it ever since Wes Anderson first appeared in the collection. But I also think that Bottle Rocket will come out with very little fanfare. As much as I've wanted to see Criterion release Bottle Rocket I'm more excited about Chungking Express. I'd be more excited if we were getting a Wes Anderson Blu-ray set of all his films on Criterion.

We must have watched different movies, then, because the Bottle Rocket I saw was slightly amusing, but certainly not as good as any subsequent Wes Anderson film.

The fact that on this forum Bottle Rocket has been mentioned quite a few times is hardly an indicator as to how well it would sell, or, how popular of a title it is. Criterion have a much larger base of followers and especially on some of the non-English speaking forums (believe it or not Criterion have just as dedicated of a fan base overseas as they do here) there is a lot of buzz about their upcoming releases. We will have to see how the region-coding will affect sales though.

Wow. I really don't understand the love for Wes Anderson. Blah, IMO. I think Bottle Rocket is one of his better efforts, but that's not saying much.

To each their own, but for me The Third Man, Walkabout and Chungking Express measure about a 9 on the Richter scale, while Bottle Rocket has the impact of a hamster falling off of a park bench.

I think Wes Anderson is a very, very minor talent compared to a lot of the other directors in the Criterion catalog... and I agree that Bottle Rocket is by far the weakest of the first wave of Criterion BDs. But I'm getting it cause it's still pretty good lol.
