99% for Blu-Ray movies. I have 3 games, but I'm still working on the first one after 6 months. Thought it would be addicting, but I find them frustrating.

How quiet is the system while playing a movie, compared to other Blu-Ray players?
I've never owned a stand-alone Blu-Ray player, but I never hear the PS3 during a movie (sitting 6 feet away).

Be careful about buying a 40gb PS3, i bought one in January and i already had to send it in because it stopped reading all discs. I checked around and apparently it is an issue with some of the 40gb. They did fix it for free and paid shipping but it sucks being out of a system for two weeks.

this thread should be in the Video Games forum.

I mean... what results do you expect in the HD Talk forum?

Well, like others, I originally bought it as a BD player, but did end up getting a few games (The Darkness, Lair, Devil May Cry)... But after my 360 got the rrod this past week, all dual title releases will now be bought on ps3 from here on out. I really work the hell out of my 20g ps3 and it keeps on going.

I was thinking that myself. You're going to get widely different answers in the different forums. Despite my general cynicism for the state of PS3 gaming, there are some people that bought them mainly for playing games.

Bought it used for $20 shipped so even if it sucks I should be able to resell it for $10...

Same thing just happened to my 60gb. Blu-ray drive just died. It was repaired quickly (and because they don't make the system any more I got my own system back with game data intact), but I agree with you. You don't realize how much you use it for DVD/Blu-ray until it is gone/dead for two weeks!

I bought mine for watching Blu-ray movies. I already have an Xbox 360, so there's been no real motivation for me to buy games for yet another system. Unless they come out with a PS3 exclusive game that's a true "must have", I doubt I'll be using it for anything but movies any time soon.

I'm also using it as a media server. I swapped out the 60GB drive in mine for a 320GB, and I loaded it with 60GB of music so far!

Although I'm a long-time PC gamer, I've never owned a console.

But when I set out to buy a BD player, the extra virtues of the PS3 -- particularly gaming and media serving -- for less money than any standalone I would have considered, made it a very easy decision.

I still mostly use it for BD playing, but the ability to rip DVDs on my computer and watch them on my TV with TVersity, to play games (and use my own music library instead of default in-game music), and to download demos and trailers... it's a stunning feature set when you think about it, especially for the $300 I paid.

How is its functionality as a music server? I found the interface to be a bit clunky, but I didn't do too much experimenting with it, so who knows?

I voted for Blu-ray playback only since I've only play 1 game on the PS3 (Rockband).

To be honest I bought the PS3 to play blu-rays...

But saying that I do own several games: "The simpsons," "Rock Band," and "Guitar Hero 3," and will buy "Grand Theft Auto" and the next "Final Fantasy".

I got my 40GB PS3 as a gift so I can't complain about the price, but for $399 I really don't see how some people think it's too expensive.

I wanted the PS3 for mainly BD playback. I have been playing games fairly often these days, however. Before I got the PS3 a couple months back, the only time I ever played video games was when I went to my friend's house. I haven't used the PS2 in my house in almost 2 years. I have 6 games right now for the PS3 and I've always found the EA NHL games highly addicting. I've been playing NHL 08 and GTA IV the most. I've never really been great at video games, but I used to be quite into them during the N64 days (GoldenEye is the single most memorable video game ever, IMO) and I played video games on the PS2 up until around 2 years ago. I've always enjoyed the hockey, wrestling, 007 and GTA games.

The BD playback is still the main reason for the PS3 for me.

I got it for the idea of watching BD AND playing games. The later has yet to really happen. I picked up UT III but I played it only once. All my friends are on XBL so I use my 360 for gaming. I need more PS3 gaming friends.

Ditto. It was a half/half purchase so I've been okay with it.

I've owned my PS3 for only two months and so far it's been probably 40% media lounge, 40% BD, and 20% games. I only own NCAA 08, NBA 2K7, and I just downloaded Mortal Kombat II from the PS3 store. I do own about 25 BDs now.

For the person asking about the media lounge aspect, I love it. I used to own a D-Link DSM320 and the PS3 just blows it away. I stream all of my videos, mp3s, photos from my server upstairs. I use TVersity. I also use uSirius and stream Sirius radio through my home theater system. Watching youTube videos on the PS3 browser is great too. This is easily the greatest machine for only $400.

Mainly Blu-Ray, but I also play PSN games with it. I don't own any PS3 disc-based games (I mostly game on my 360 due to a better, IMO, controller), but have been meaning to pickup Motorstorm.

It has become my primary stand alone player (used to use an Oppo but the voice syncing always seems to be a little off and loading the carousel player for a single DVD is a hassle). I also play a good amount of games on it though, more so than the 360... in fact it's opposite for the previous gen of game systems. Before anything that was out for both systems I would play on the Xbox, anything these days that's out for both I'll do it on the PS3.

Ditto. Blu-ray and PSN games. I only own Motorstorm, but rented some of the other popular exclusives last year. I keep to the 360 for the majority of my gaming needs.
