". . . the Blu-ray release offers an exclusive in the form of the “SmileBox” version of the film which presents the image with a unique curvature that virtually recreates the true Cinerama® experience in a home theater."

So, buy the premium version of the film, get a warped/distorted image? That's going to make masking for constant image height setups a real chore.

you might have to buy a curved screen

I wish! I've been itching to build a CIH setup for some time, now.:)

This "SmileBox" thing seems more like an ill-conceived gimmick, though, as -- if I'm understanding it correctly -- it will actually display on a flat screen as a warped image bowing downward in the middle. That couldn't be fixed by a curved screen, as the purpose of their curve is to compensate for pincushion effect from an anamorphic lens. I rather suspect that a curved screen would just make the "SmileBox" effect even more obnoxious.

Sleepwalking - July 8

Starz Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Sleepwalking' to Blu-ray on July 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film, which stars Charlize Theron and Nick Stahl, was selected for the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. No technical specs have been announced at this time, and the only special feature to be announced is the featurette "A Mother's Shame, A Family's Pain: The Making of Sleepwalking".

I've been trying to wrap my head around the Smilebox feature. There is a thread over at AVS with the following very informative post by rlsmith:

Let me try to provide some more background here.

As the diagram above shows, Cinerama was shot with 3 panels of 35mm film (6 perfs instead of 4 so each is taller than normal film) and displayed with 3 projectors. There was also an interlock mag film for 7-track stereophonic sound.

<Editorial>This process is absolutely fantastic. All improvements to film and video for the last 56 years have been an effort to replicate Cinerama. Nothing has. See this at the Seattle Cinerama Theatre (best) or the Hollywood Cinerama Dome (good but compromised.</Editorial>

Anyway, there is a huge problem in converting Cinerama to other formats. HTWWW was converted to 35mm Cinemascope/Metrocolor in 1963 and everything we have seen of it since has been made from the 35mm master. It totally destroys the film's cinematic effect.

The aspect ratio is, formally, over 3:1, but since it is shown on a heavily curved screen, it is actually less from the audience's perspective. Efforts to flatten it out result in huge optical distortion on the two side panels since you are flattening something that was shot "curved".

Smilebox is a solution to this problem. It creates a flat version of what you would see if you had a heavily curved 146-degree screen. I have seen it and it works. It is featured in a documentary called Cinerama Adventure which has been around since 2002 but rarely seen due to rights issues.

Warners has included both the documentary and also a version of HTWWW using Smilebox. This should be a real treat since it is probably the nearest thing to having a Cinerama setup in your house (which someone did BTW!) Thank you Warners!!!

Here are links with information about the documentary and the Smilebox process.

Click the links for more info and also checkout the wikipedia entry for Cinerama. The important point to realize that isn't mentioned specifically in rlsmith's post is that the three conjoined cameras were set at 48 degrees to each other, which produces the "curved" perspective that he refers to. The Smilebox version will, on a flat screen at home, reproduce the perspective of watching it in a Cinerama theater. The "flattened" (non-Smilebox) version is actually a distortion of the original camera perspective and theatrical presentation, as rlsmith notes in his post.

"Smilebox" - it sounds like an alternative rock band.

I would not expect any of WB's animation that was produced in 4:3 to be a high priority at this point for Blu-ray. Justice League was produced for a 1.78 presentation, and the original DVD releases were 4:3 (Season 1) & 1.78 Matted (Season 2). Only Justice League: Unlimited was released in 1.78 Anamorphic Widescreen on DVD.

Good news on Justice League series - I watched the 3 episodes on the New Frontier disc, and they were much better than the movie I thought.

I think WB mentioned something about this in one of the Home Theater Forum chats. I'm not surprised. It's the 25th anniversary and there's never been a special edition for the movie.

Woah. Talk about crap (minus 21).

Zen Peckinpah 05-03-08 10:31 PM

Might pick 21 up. Like House of Games for a younger, less intelligent demographic, but still above-average and fun.

True_Story1011 05-04-08 11:20 AM

I thought they would've brought out 'Scream' before they dipped into the other Kevin Williamson horror flicks.

So I take it 'Teaching Mrs. Tingle' is coming during Christmas?
