The Onkyo 605 is on sale for $340 at Amazon right now if you don't mind silver over black.

Amazon now has it for $519.25 with free shipping:

I hope the deal lasts through my next few paychecks.

Keep in mind the Onkyo 606 is just coming out. Similiar to the 605 except with 4 HDMI inputs.

Also, you do NOT need a receiver to support DTS-HD or DTS-HD MA with the PS3 since the PS3 does all the decoding (or however you say it). I was confused by this....I may wait for decent HDMI receiver to drop in price (I need at least 3 HDMI inputs).

Yes but apparently the 705 can matrix 5.1 PMC to 7.1 whereas the 605 cannot, DJ_Longfellow.

Another vote for the Onkyo 605 or 705.

Thanks....good to know. I was just pointing out that the receiver does NOT need the next-gen formats...I was confused by this at first. I'm still looking though. The Onkyo 606 seems nice to me. I only have a 6.1 set-up currently at home.

Thanks for that, DJ_Longfellow. Though I was already aware of that (the same holds true for my HD-A2 which I'm keeping) the heads up was a ppreciated nonetheless.

Even if you don't need the receiver to decode HD audio, you DO need is one that can accept multichannel LPCM over HDMI and apply all the necessary post-processing (bass management, speaker delay, subwoofer crossover, etc.). The PS3, for one, does internal decoding but does not do any post-processing, so the receiver must do it.

It is very unlikely that such a receiver won't also do HD audio decoding.

If you want a future-proof receiver, you want one that can decode HD codecs that come in via bitstream or HDMI. You never know when there will be HD streaming devices, HD internet content, HD cable or satellite that offers advanced audio only via bitstream somewhere down the line.

Fortunately, these are becoming entry level features on sub-$400 receivers.

Since I can't seem to find anywhere local that sells the 705, I decided to order it from Amazon. Sadly, I was greeted with this message: *** We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order by changing its quantity to 0 and clicking the update button below. ( See geographical restrictions.) ***

Sometimes it really blows to live in Puerto Rico.

I just got the Onkyo 606. $449 shipped at J&R. Couldn't be happier. Highly recommended.

Shipping Options and Policies

Areas We Ship To

At the present time, we only ship to the Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories, Puerto Rico, and Canada. J&R proudly ships to our Armed Forces APO/FPO customers.

P.O. Box customers - please try to use a regular street address where possible. UPS allows for faster service, better tracking and accountability than postal mail.

Shipping Cost

You will find Ground shipping charges for your order in the summary section of your shopping cart when you enter your ZIP Code and click "Calculate Total". The basic charge for Ground Shipping on any product can be found on the product information page, by clicking the "Shipping" tab, enter your ZIP Code and click "Calculate Shipping".

Shipping costs for orders are based on weight or dimensional weight (determined by the actual size of the box), whichever is greater. Ground shipping is not available to AK, HI, VI, or Puerto Rico. All shipments to Canada except shipments to P.O. boxes use UPS Ground. We do not ship to P.O. box addresses in the Pacific Rim U.S. territories (Guam, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, Palau, etc.); you must have a street address. All orders to U.S. territories will be shipped via UPS Worldwide Service.

Actually, they won't ship it to me even if I pay. This is the message I got when I input my zipcode:

"We're sorry but we cannot ship the following item(s) (ONK TXSR705B) outside of the US due to manufacturer restrictions. Please remove it from your cart, or change your shipping address."

Wow, I took their shipping policy at their word. They must have exceptions.

Remind me to not ever move to Puerto Rico. On the other hand, you didn't have more than 100 inches of snow last winter.

I know my A3 has problems decoding sound, so I want a receiver that has >=2 hdmi ports and can decode the True HD & best Blu-ray sound with out killing my bank..
Right now I have a Kenwood 5.1 receiver with 0 hdmi.
thankz
Similar to my setup - an A2 and a PS3.

Sorry to break into the Onkyo love-fest here, but I'm a Harman man. I used to own a Kenwood receiver back in the day, before I found HK. There was no looking back, had my first Harman for about 10 years.

Currently have the HK 247, it has 2 HDMI inputs and it's a beauty, both aesthetically and aurally. I think I paid around $400 new for mine last year. If you enjoy your music as much as movies, I'd recommend listening to a Harman Kardon.

I love HK sound too. It's totally different from Onkyo.
Too bad they don't support the new codecs yet. At least not at an affordable price.

I finally managed to order it from Amazon. I took advantage of the free standard shipping and had it sent to my uncle's home in TX. From there, I'll have him ship it via priority mail (plus insurance) to my home in PR. It's a rather roundabout way to do it but it's the best option I could find that wouldn't be too pricey (and would actually work).

What codecs are those? The only thing I'm aware of the 247 not supporting is overlaying 7.1 to Dolby PLII, but I'm not using a 7.1 setup anyway. Dolby Digital +, True HD, and now DTS HD-MA with the PS3 all sound terrific on my setup.

Yeah, I was talking more about native support for those formats.

This is me as well. I currently have a STR-DE985 with will be doing 6.1 over optical (no HDMI input) from PS3 bitstream.

I think the PS3 can pass all the audio formats over to my receiver, and it will just be downconverted to 5.1. So, the big upside to getting a 7.1 HDMI capable receiver is the extra rear speaker and "lossless" HDMI from PS3 instead of the downconverted 5.1.

Have people noticed a significant difference to make it worth the upgrade cost and torture (I dread the re-wiring!!)?

From the PS3 you cannot bitstream Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD HR, and DTS-HD MA. It will be converted to Dolby Digital or DTS at a bitrate of 1.5mbps and that's the limit through an optical connection. Even if you convert it to PCM in the PS3, they will be downconverted to Dolby Digital or DTS at a bitrate of 1.5mbps.

The PS3 doesn't do any conversion of audio formats (other than to PCM over HDMI). If you use optical, it will output the existing core DTS track, or DD track if the disc is TrueHD. PCM tracks are downmixed to stereo.

That's what I meant. At least that was what was in my head when I was typing.

Never mentioned that I finally got the 705. I had to ship it to my uncle in Texas (free shipping via Amazon) and from there he shipped it to me in Puerto Rico. I got the receiver for $519.99 and only paid $46.48 for shipping (+ insurance).

I'm loving my new Onkyo!
