I did the *exact* same thing with the 1-2 switch when I first got mine. Had to RTFM...

If your firmware is at 2.7, leave it there. Don't upgrade to 2.8, or you'll get the jaggies that everyone but you can see.

Glad you scored one, Paul. Enjoy it!

Well, I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one that did that!

OH, NO BRETSKI!!! & &

I already...already...

PAH! Just kidding!

I haven't done it yet!

But it's presently at: 2.5/T23T whatever the heck THAT is.

Is it okay?

Should I upgrade to 2.7 if I can? I mean, I'm not sure if I can even get 2.7 if there's already 2.8 out there...

Well, let's tell it like it is:

I wouldn't have had a bowl of slops chance in a hog convention without help from such a Fine Quality Gentleman as yourself that was willing to take the time and go the extra mile by helping an ol' baggy eyed fart that was down on his luck, spend his last 334 dollars.

I could hardly believe it, but there was that lad from a few days before with a nice size package (no, that doesn't sound right...) a nice sized box (no, no...that doesn't sound any better either...) a 'cubular structure made of cardboard' (ah, that's it! ), and sure enough, it was my XA2!

I said, 'WOW! Now That's early! Hey wait a minute! Did you come by special just for little ol' me?', and he said, 'Well, I couldn't have ya waiting around all day...like the other day', and I said, 'Good Gawd, Man! Thanks a lot! You've gotta know I really appreciate that!', and he said, 'Don't mention it. It was no problem', and I gave him my signature, and that was that!

So I brought the box inside and I noticed it had a large 'TOSHIBA' printed on the top, which made me feel pretty good. I got a razor blade and sliced through the packing tape and when I opened the box I could see everything was neatly wrapped and taped nicely.

I found the bag with the remote control, a pink refurb/warranty page, manual, power chord, and a standard 3-dealy RCA patch cable.

The remote right off looked like it had seen better days, as it had scratches and marks all over it, but looking closer I noticed that it was still wearing that protective 'skin' sheet thing, so I pealed it off and many of the scratches and mars disappeared!

Now to the unit. It was wedged in-between 4 corners of Styrofoam and wrapped & taped tight with a white foam sheet, and upon removing it, I noticed it had finger prints and smudges all over the damn thing!

(Not unlike the XA1 I got from Overstock.com. For one reason or another, no one seems to want to clean these refurbs up before shipping them out...I mean, dust 'em off at least for Pete's sake! )

So I instantly got one of my yellow micro-fiber towels out of the bag of 36 (that clean anything, and are available at Costco, BTW), and my bottle of Turtle Wax spray-on/wipe-off polish, and I proceeded to give it the once over.

It had a few minor scratches and some tiny dings on the corner of the brushed aluminum case, but all-n-all it cleaned up very nicely. I noticed it was also a December 2006 build, like Voids.

I plugged it in and turned it on. I popped that Transformers disc in it and after a moment the sound came on (and sounded mighty fine), but YIKES-SAKE!!! There was NO picture!

I checked the cables and the switcher to see that all were tight and secure, and they were, but still no friggin' picture!

That's when I started a mini-freak-out-party thinking about what a pain in the arse shipping & then waiting twice as long - all over again...it was going to be, and shaking like a tazered Don Knots (Hey! Don't taze me bro!), I grabbed the manual and flipped over to the troubleshooting pages!

It mentioned something about a switch on the front...and that's when I remembered when cleaning it, under the door, there was a small little switch, and it was set to '2'. I flipped it to '1' as I thought, 'What's this doing at '2'? This is America! Everything starts out at 1', and Man, oh Man, was I ever wrong about that!

I stopped the unit, flipped the damn switch and turned the thing back on, and YA-HOO FOR SUBARU!!! The picture came on and all was well with the world and all the townsfolk rejoiced!

So there ya have it!

Thanks again, bretski for all your help securing this Lovely One!

All's well that ends well I always say!

I need a cigarette after reading that. Damn.

They call it a 'Mode Switch' and it selects the output video jack.

The manual explains it like this:

Set the Mode Switch according to your connection:

1= S-Video or (Yellow) Input

2 = HDMI or Component Video Input

I only use the HDMI, and had it set to '1'.

(No wonder there was no picture! )

Anyway, I switched it to '2' and that was it!

Dear ,

Here's the link to the official 2.7 firmware:

http://tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-i...-XA2-2700N.zip

The general consensus out there in internet-land is that this is the best firmware to run. If we are lucky, Toshiba will release 2.9 to fix the jaggies issue, but I'm not holding my breath.

One more little tidbit, just in case you need it: To enable the backlight on the remote, press and hold the "backlight" button for about 5 seconds or so. Repeat to disable it. I use a Harmony remote for mine, but this question comes up fairly often...

As an aside, I finally got around to watching Blade Runner the other night...

I don't remember this movie ever looking so good. Wow. Just Wow.

You found the 2.7 firmware!

Thanks, DUDE!

That one is a bit different from any of the previous updates I've installed, in that (by golly) it has an update within an update!

Being unaware of that eventuality, I thought it was misbehaving, but after a little 'Urgent' research, I found that it was indeed meant to do that.

So, for those who choose to use the above provided link, the following installation notes may be helpful:

1. A message will appear, and the firmware update will automatically start.
2. When the firmware update is completed, the player will automatically turn itself off.

For the HD-XA2 player only, please also follow steps 3 through 6.

3. Power up the player again.
4. The player will display a message that another update will start.
5. Read the message and press OK. The message will disappear, and the second firmware update will automatically start. Please be patient during this process. (During the update, "VERUP" will flash on the display of the player.)
6. When the firmware update is completed, the player will automatically turn itself off.

Re: Backlight:

I have Toshiba's Battle Ship, 'The Mighty XA1', and I learned about the backlight thingamabobby way back in HD Boot Camp ( ), but thanks for the info. Important facts like that are worthy of repeating.

You know, I haven't yet watched Blade Runner, but I'll take your word for its jaw-dropping picture quality. Maybe Treesa & I will take it for a spin Saturday night.

Have a Great weekend,

-Pablo Tres

Finally got the open box A35 from Amazon.com late yesterday afternoon. Was going to hook it up last night. But we lost power for about 3 hours. So I just a few minutes ago I hooked it up. I use the same power cable from the A2 and the HDMI cable that was used to hook up the A2. As soon as I turn it on the tray pops open and the Welcome sign comes up on the front of the unit. I have never seen the tray pop open like this before when hitting the power button. Any way I load put a hd dvd in the tray and hit the close/open button on the remote. It says loading and about 5 seconds later the tray pops open. I tried 4 different hd dvd movies and all of them do the same thing. All you see on the front display is opening and loading. I did set the clock when it first turned on. Worst yet if you power the unit off the tray stays open. This piss of crap is defective. Don't they even test these things. All it came in was a brown Amazon.com box with bubble wrap on top of the unit. I am pissed off since it looks like I will not be able to find another A35 for ($162) again. Just by looking at the prices at Amazon.com. Of well back to my MIJ A2 brought back in Dec 06.

Also does the remote the same one as the A2? Because they both look the same to me. The model # is SE-R0252.

Hey kahuna.

Sorry to hear you're having a 'situation' with your 35.

What about trying to install the 1.3 firmware bretski posted in post #68? The lil' bastard just might recognize that it's a System Disc, come to attention, cut the crap, and straighten the Hell out!

In the meantime, have you tried to power on the unit with the remote, then open the tray with the remote's open/close button, put a disc in the thing, and then (still using the remote), press the play button to close it and attempt to play the disc?

I don't know about the remote being the same as the one that comes with the A2, but that number matches the one I received.

Here's hoping everything works out.

-Paul

kahuna,

Definitely try to install some newer firmware versions. Also, try to "initialize" the player if you have this option.

Oh, yeah!

You know, it being an open box and all, someone might have tried to update but didn't let it finish and screwed up it's insides.

So, listen to the good Doctor (Dr. Poli), get into the Setup Menu and Initialize! Initialize! Initialize!

That might be just the thing to restore all that crap that contaminated it!

Let us know, ASAP!

We won't sleep until we've heard from you!

I tried everything but the unit is defective. As soon as you turn it on whether it's from the front of the unit or using the remote. The Welcome sign comes on in the display area and the tray automatically opens. 15 seconds later the tray closes and then reopens just as the blue hd-dvd light on the front of unit lights up. Then the tray closes again and opens for another 15 seconds. If you try to close the tray from the remote it will close and say loading and then a few seconds later say opening. I have tried sd dvds, hd-dvds and even tried to the 2.0 cdr firmware upgrade disc and it just will not read any disc. It will always end up in the open position. When you power it off either from the front of the unit or remote it will say goodbye and turn off but the tray will stay open. You manually have to push the tray in to close it.

I already filled out the return form on Amazon.com for UPS to come pick it up. I asked for a replacement so lets see what will happen. They have 1 open/box unit listed for $228 and 2 refurbds for $172.

So you can't force it into the setup menu by pressing the setup button?

(Even if the trays open, you should be able to get into the setup menu...???)

Oh Well...

Treesa! We can sleep now...

I Initialize the unit 3 times and it did no good. The firmware in the unit is 1.3. Created a 2.0 firmware disc but unit will not read any discs put in it. All it wants to do is have the tray open.

In all the years I have been buying electronics from Amazon.com. This is the third (Go-Video & Zune) to not work. These two units were brand new. The A35 was the first return open box item I have ever purchase from Amazon.com.

Well crap, Kahuna. Very sorry to hear about this problem. Here's a link to an A35-specific thread over at AVS:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=925599

It's 130 pages, but somehwere might be the same issue you're having.

That was the first thing I tried. I even unplugged it for 30 minutes. When I first turned it on and saw the tray open I knew there was something wrong. And just think I was all ready to hear some True HD audio.

Sorry to hear you got a bum unit, kahuna. Did it come with a warranty? I'd try calling Toshiba before sending it back to Amazon. There have been many reports of Tosh sending new units as warranty replacements. Just a thought...

WOW Bretski!

That would be GREAT!

But in the meantime...

&

This sucks SO BIG I can't even measure it.

Well, let's hope you get one THEY CHECKED FIRST.

I'd add that to the note I'd be sending them with VOMIT ON IT!

I may just have to do this since I just got this reply from Amazon.com. I am just worried how much will it cost to ship from Hawaii to where ever Toshiba Service Center is. I could take a chance on ordering one of the refurbs units from Amazon.con Warehouse deals. Although it would cost ne $10 more. Before I brought this unit I called Amazon.com and they said this unit should come with a full 1 year warranty even though it was a open unit.

I'm sorry, but because Warehouse Deals' inventory is constantly changing, we are unable to replace any items sold through Warehouse Deals.

Treesa just asked, 'They won't give him his money back?'

What about that?

That's what I'd do, and buy somewhere else, if I can't get satisfaction with Amazon.

Does it say somewhere that they won't refund your money?

But, if ya wanna get it repaired, are ya sure Toshiba doesn't have a Service Center in Hawaii?

Well, what do ya know! They Do!

I did a search and found this:

Toshiba Authorized Service Center in Hawaii

SAM'S ELECTRONIC SERVICE
94-866 Moloalo Street, Suite D-10
Waipahu,HI 96797

(808) 677-7707

That's gotta be cheaper to ship if ya wanna use the warrantee and get it repaired!

At least it's 'IN' Hawaii!

Amazon.con will refund my money they just will not replace the unit. See below.

First, please allow me to extend my apologies for any inconvenience this matter
has caused.

I see that you placed this order #105-3173265-1425804 with our subsidiary
Warehouse Deals.

I'm sorry, but because Warehouse Deals' inventory is constantly changing, we are
unable to replace any items sold through Warehouse Deals.

You're welcome to return the item for a refund.

We'll pay the return shipping cost since the return is a result of our error.

Trust me before buying this unit I looked all over the place for one. There she in hell were none here in Hawaii.

I might just pick up a refurb unit from Warehousedeals. Because are reading the Toshiba service thread and I am hearing a lot of stories of people taking a long time to get their unit back from Toshiba Service or getting it replaced.

I already know about Sam's Electronics in Waipahu. When Panasonic Hawaii closed down. And I had problems with my Panny E-80 dvd recorder which was still under warranty. They were the ones Panasonic recommended me to take the unit to. But most people I been reading in the Toshiba Service thread on AvsForums are having to send to unit to a particular place on the mainland.

I would of prefer to get a XA2 but no one sold them here. And places like Overstock and Ubid who were selling refurbs to not ship to Hawaii.

So then, you're gonna return it to Amazon, right?

...and then just get another one from them?

I mean, I understand they said they won't 'replace' it, but that certainly doesn't mean you can't send the one you have now in for a refund, and in the meantime just order another one (that actually works... ).
