Transworld chain stores recalls all HD DVDs

I was at my local FYE(Trumbull, CT) yesterday and they still had HD DVDs for sale. They are somewhat picked over, but I did notice that the Weinstein titles were down to $9.99.

If all these recalled titles don't end up for sale somewhere, and they do end up being destroyed, I think he may have a point.
It certainly is in the best interests of the studios not to devalue their IPs by allowing HD versions of their titles to sell for bargain basement prices. Understandable.
But that does fly in the face of "the market has spoken" rhetoric that has been flying around.

In the long run, I think the industry should show very little pity to the few HD die-hards who are moaning about not being able to find "Bee Story" on HD or buy some clearanced titles which they could easily have bought a month or so earlier, had they really cared.

100% Bullshit. Whatever that store was pulling was part of their March recall, where the stores pull overstock and non-moving titles every month. There is no "Official Pull All HD-DVDs" memo, anywhere. Quite the opposite from what I have seen in local stores as they are even buying used HD-DVDs (probably the only ones silly enough to continue doing so).

It doesn't really matter how we got where we are today, but the studios and the stores are doing the right thing for HDM in general by removing the failed format from the sight of consumers. Anything that can be done (and I'm include rushing to full 2.0 complience) to reduce consumer confusion about HDM is a good thing.

Why are you so concerned about HD DVD still competing with Blu-ray on the retail floor? It shouldn't even be an after thought. I would have thought by now HD DVD would be the fart of a Blu-ray owner who would have moved on by now.
The HD industry isn't showing any pity at all. They are simply clearancing product. Which is normal for any dead product line. Why are you (and a few others) adamant in "removing" product from the shelves entirely, without a clearance sale, and as soon as possible?
If you've read any of these HD DVD threads, you will know people are KNOWINGLY buying these HD DVD titles and cheap players--they aren't stupid or confused as our marketing gurus would elude to. Consumers buying HD DVD product currently know this is a dead format.
So, the Remove HD DVD From The Shelves To Prevent Confusion doesn't make sense. What makes more sense? Removing HD DVD in order to FORCE HD DVD owners to purchase more Blu-ray titles.

And you HD DVD owners had better get used to buy Blu-ray someday - why not now?

No BS. Saw the memo with my own eyes that the Florida and Caribbean distric manager for Transworld stores showed me. All HD-DVDs go back to the studio for credit. A similar memo was given to both Borders and Blockbuster here in Puerto Rico. The DM for Transworld mentioned to me that it was for all stores in the US and Caribbean and that corporate made that decision. Right now, the only HD DVDs available in the island are in Circuit City, Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Transworld only retained used ones in their stores as well as a local video club franchise name Video Avenue.
I don't understand the logic of the stores or the studios either, but i know that corporate mentality wouldn't let pass a studio credit for a dead format. Like it or not, HD DVD is going the way of the dodo. i know is frustating to some people like me that were waiting for the fire sale that will most likely not arrive anytime soon.

Maybe when all of the HD's have been returned to the studios, they'll start getting sold off to discounting chains or back to the stores as clearance. As much as I'd like to see an end to the format war "confusion", it would be nice if the product could be sold and wan't junked.

I don't think they are taking any trade ins for HD DVDs. They have in stock all the used ones that were brought before the HD DVD shutdown.

I'm a bit surprised that they are still taking trade ins but I'm sure that won't last too much longer. I'll know for sure tomorrow as I still have a couple HV rentals I'll be flipping for credit.
Also, just to add more fuel to the fire, the same manager yesterday said that she had to pack up all of the new HD DVD stock and send it back to corporate. There are too many independent reports to indicate it's BS.

Just got back from FYE at lunch. They still are taking HD DVDs. Traded in Hot Rod, Freedom Writers and Transformers for $39.60 in credit ($8 each cash + 25% for credit + 20% bonus + 10% backstage pass).
