This gets me thinking about picking up a backup HD-A3 when it hits $50 for a brand new unit. But then again, I might probably feel stupid for doing so seeing as how I currently only have 10 HD DVD discs (and hopefully 5 more by mail) and there doesn't seem to be any fire sale happening with media. I just hope some future Blu-ray players from Toshiba might incorporate HD DVD playback as well.

Whether I pick up another player when they get dirt cheap is questionable, but I suppose I will still buy some dvds... in the long run, it probably won't cost that much, and I'm sure that in my less-wise days I have spent money far more frivolously.
Thank God were correct, I didnt even study for this quiz!

I'm not sure I agree with the consensus here. I bought Toshiba nearly exclusively for about the past 20 years. I still have a Toshiba tv from high school that plays great. Same for an old Toshiba DVD player. However, the last 2 dvd players I bought from them broke within 2 years (the last one lasted about 3 months). Their quality has gone downhill significantly in recent years, to the point where I don't typically even buy their products anymore.

I did buy an A2 from Wal-Mart during the $100 sale but I don't expect it to last more than 2-3 years tops.

I seriously doubt that Toshiba is going to leave their HD-DVD customers in the lurch or even stop offering future firmware upgrades. They've said as much already.

As far as electronics, the oldest piece that I own is a Sharp 4 head Hi-FI stereo VHS VCR VC-H860 that I bought way back in 1991. It still works fine.

My A2 still has a 3 year extended warranty so if it breaks I can only hope a combo player is available.

I doubt my A3 lasts very long honestly. It is already making some weird noises and has locked up once in a movie.

For as long as you take care of it. My first DVD player works just fine... 9 years later.

I'm not as concerned about when it breaks as I am about when will the studios stop supporting the online HD-DVD content that you can currently access with your HD-DVD player connected to the internet.

This is why I am somewhat against not having all the content on the discs themselves.

Unless I am mistaken, once Profile 2.0 launches, it will have online content. Blu-ray will not be around forever either, and studios may not support the format 20 years from now.

My 1998 Toshiba DVD player lasted 9 years before it went belly up. I have a Toshiba TV that I have had for 15 years and still works great! I also have a 10 year old Toshiba VCR that still beats current VCR's in terms of quality picture (well, as good as you can get with VCRs anyway).
