The Official HD DVD Clearance Sale Thread

MOD NOTE: No eBay links, no Craigslist links, and...really, nothing you can't walk into a store or click over to a website and buy.
It's been a fun ride but all good things must come to an end. So far, the only clearances I've found is for the players at Circuit City. Eventually, stores will have fire sales on HD-DVD's and this is the thread for it. Please post any deals you find for HD-DVD's.

A-3 - $99.99

A-30 - $129.99

I had an A35 and returned it when the whole WB thing went down. I'd love to pick up another, but I doubt I would spend more than $125 - $150 for an extra player like that. It was a great player though, it would be insane to pick up that high-end a player for that much.

nmr1723 02-19-08 05:55 PM

Excellent idea for a thread...I agree with Gizmo and Cultshock...show me some software deals!

I wouldn't mind an A35 for $100 though...but I think I'm dreaming.

TheMovieman 02-19-08 05:59 PM

Yep, I'm eagerly awaiting disc sales. As much as it sucks to be on the wrong side of this, if I can get some great titles for amazing prices, it makes it a tad easier.

:up::up:

Spotted one on Amazon for ~$160 a few days ago ... you never know!

jiggawhat 02-19-08 06:21 PM

Well I just picked up an A3 from Circuit City for about $50 bucks after tax, coupons, and gift cards. I'm not going to open it up right away just in case it goes down in price again.

MrDs10e 02-19-08 06:28 PM

Waiting for a $50 player and $5 discs. Blu-ray is still a long way off from my price point, so I'm gonna scoop up some clearance HD-DVD stuff if the prices come low enough. I won't build a huge collection, just a nice upconverting player, and a few titles here and there.

I will def cop a A35 if they get low enough. I won't go over $125.
There are still a few discs I would like to pick up, I need me that Heroes Season 1, and a few other discs too.

Come on fire sale, I am ready.

mbs 02-19-08 07:32 PM

Are we thinking the 5-disc rebates will remain valid on any players purchased during the fire sales?

I hope I get my 5-discs from the HD-A3 I bought in December.

Big Worms 02-19-08 07:34 PM

A35 for nice price is all I am asking for.

mbs 02-19-08 07:36 PM

I might buy an A-35 on amazon for $220. That would give me 30-days to pricematch their lowest price, hopefully getting close to $150. I wonder what sort of supply amazon has of the players.

Abe. 02-19-08 07:39 PM

The first disc I'll probably pick up, if the price is right, will definitely be Slither.

DVD Polizei 02-19-08 07:44 PM

I have to wonder, since the actual number of HD DVDs sold is up for debate, that current HD DVD users will have more than enough titles to go around.

C'mon B1G2!

I would suspect Toshiba would face the wrath of class action suits if it reneged on what was a clear promise.

kvrdave 02-19-08 08:03 PM

I have been hoping for a fire sale on discs yet when I look around, I find there aren't a lot of movies I want. Wish like hell there was more out there.

TheMovieman 02-19-08 08:04 PM

I'll definately pick up Heroes if that goes on sale...

What kind of movies are you looking for? Grab some documentary HD DVDs. Galapagos is my next purchase with a few others.

Darknite39 02-19-08 08:17 PM

I just went over to highdefdigest and created a "wants" list based on their list of releases for the format. Considering I only have 16 discs, it was a long list.

I'm guessing we won't see any super cheap players until after the rebate deal is dead, which I think is at the end of this month.

Darknite39 02-19-08 08:24 PM

Yeah, I may take a gamble on a backup player from amazon on the day the rebate expires. That way I get the movies (though the selection leaves something to be desired), and I'm covered in the event there are further price drops on it during Toshiba's "Get Outta Dodge!" promotion.

matrixrok9 02-19-08 08:24 PM

I don't know how reliable this site is but most of their HD-DVD's are $12.99. $12.99 is still too high for a fire sale...

^Good looking out but hit me up when HD DVD get sub $10

MBoyd 02-19-08 09:00 PM

I saw signage at Frys tonight that said CLEARANCE MOVIES - WHILE SUPPLIES LAST on small red signs in front of the HD DVDs. No change in prices though.

darkside 02-19-08 09:25 PM

I planned on selling off most of my HD DVDs, but if I see discs sub $10 I will be buying. I still have a small LD collection so why not HD DVDs as well.

Agreed, sub $10 HD DVDs will get me buying again.

I had no intention of selling off, but I had slowed purchases - alot, especially WB, which I had been buying on HD DVD. Since I have over 90 I figure I am going to be dual format for good. Like you I still have a small LD collection I have yet to part with as well as DVD, VHS and Blu-Ray. I may ditch my VHS since I am down to about 1 use a year and a collection of less than 10.

speedyray 02-19-08 11:40 PM

This was posted over in the bargains forum:

Hello all:

I was just IMing with Geoffrey and he told me I should post this offer in this forum.

HDScape is a label that releases scenic content on both HD DVD and Blu-ray. From underwater footage, aquarium and fireplace, beautiful natural scenery, all in full-motion high definition video.

Our parent company, DVD International, has a long history of supporting a wide range of platforms, from laser disc, to NUON, to D-VHS, DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray. We actually continued to sell NUON discs and controllers until very recently!

Anyway, we anticipate that there will continue to be a small, but dedicated following for HD DVD. And if you bought an HD DVD player, you might be the kind of person who wants to use it to look at fish in high definition.

If this post describes you, feel free to check out our blowout sale. Each HDScape HD DVD disc is only $6.95 and you can score all 7 of them for only $29.95.

Also, before I forget, the 2nd side of the disc is a standard DVD, which will play on any DVD player, including Blu-ray (and they look pretty good upconverted on my PS3).

www.hdscape.com

HD DVD is dead. Long live HD DVD!

Jason Rosenfeld
It is $10 shipping in case you are wondering on the 7 for 29.95 deal - no tax except for Jersey residents. Works out to a little under 5.72 a title shipped.

QuePaso 02-19-08 11:53 PM

I've read that most retailers will not be doing fire sales on HD DVD discs, just the hardware. They do not want to devalue HD Movies on disc, so they are sending them back to the studios instead. Dont take this to the bank, but i wouldnt be surprised if you didnt see much as far as disc fire sales from the major companys out there selling discs.

$150 off Craigslist. Thanks Toshiba!

Supermallet 02-20-08 01:11 AM

There's a $60 used 360 add-on right now on Amazon that I'm seriously considering. $64 with shipping. Comes with cables, no King Kong and no remote. But I've got the mini remote that came with the launch system sitting around somewhere, so that's no big deal for me.

Just so I'm clear on this, only the XA2 and the A35 could bitstream True HD and DTS HD MA, right? Was there another player that could do this? Since I have an Onkyo 605 and at least one HD DVD with DTS HD MA (Pan's Labyrinth), I want to make sure I can get a player capable of sending that audio to my receiver.

Tolhurst 02-20-08 02:38 AM

I would avoid a used 360 add-on for that price, especially without the $20+ in extras and the 5 free movie sendaway

You are correct, only the XA2 and A35 can bitstream. That's the only way you'll get DTS HD MA.

rexinnih 02-20-08 09:08 AM

Add another one waiting for a bargain priced A35. Dolby THD and DTS HD MA, that's what I'm waiting for. Or at lease analogue outs.

As far as brick-and-mortar goes, I also think this will be the case. Borders stores, for example, have been instructed to return all HD-DVDs to their warehouses and will only be carrying very limited quantites of the remaining new releases. Stores aren't going to take huge losses on this inventory when they can simply return them to the distributors for full credit.

Online vendors will probably continue with some moderate sales, but I honestly think people are going to be disappointed if they're expecting, say, Amazon to have some $5 clearance sale. The movies aren't going to go a whole lot cheaper than they currently are.

This is what I've read on some other forums as well. Or maybe it was this forum. I can't keep track anymore. Needless to say it does not look like we'll be getting those bargain-basement-priced HD-DVDs. Sucks.

When does the Border thing take effect?
I have a few I want to return.

...and the Onkyo HD DVD player, as its a clone of the XA2 (with a crappy remote and does not look nearly as good).

DJ_Longfellow 02-20-08 10:11 AM

So, what will the studios do with these movies that are being shipped back to warehouses? Burn them? Dig a big hole for all of them, like ET for Atari :)

Maybe they'll show up at Big Lots in a couple months.
