Hilarious. I almost posted that also! Think that was in New Mexico.

And I agree with the Big Lots comment.

They show up on sites like MJEntertainment. I've purchased HD DVDs and BDs from them that had price tags from Best Buy and Circuit City. They're like a surplus type of store.

forget HD...

I hope the movies get liquidated. Why not throw us one last bone, right?

These would never go to Big Lots. They would get to many returns from people not knowing what HD DVD is thinking it will work in their DVD player.

Best case scenario is they re-package and bundle existing HD DVD players with 5-10 random movies just to get rid of them. Or an online store (Amazon) would buy them really cheap and be the sole seller of them.

Of course Best Buy etc. will still stock them for months, maybe years to come. As long as they sell, they will stock them. As long as dual players are around, people may buy them.

For those in the Chicago area, the DeepDiscount store is selling all these at 14.99. Not a blazing hot deal, but considering they tend to sell the catalog titles at 23.xx, it could be worse.

discostu1337 02-20-08 11:28 AM

i ordered about 6 titles from DDD last week at the $12 price....still hasnt shipped :(

neiname 02-20-08 11:42 AM

I bought an A3 from Amazon on 12/27 for $17x and change with the 10 free promotion. I've already gotten a refund for about $45-50 based on the decline late January but I just sent an email and got a primematch down to the $109.99 price. Here is the text that I used and I went through the Express portion of their contact us on the website. It gives you a chance to click on the item from the order that is in question.

"I purchased this item at a higher price than it is currently. Could you please price match to the $109.99 price that is currently on the Amazon.com website."

actyper 02-20-08 11:52 AM

Rumour in Canada is that Futureshop will be clearing out HDs end of Feb. Will post if this becomes true.

Except ET was mass produced in gigantic numbers, more than any game of its era. Something tells me none of the studios involved with HD-DVD nor Blu Ray pressed nearly as many copies of its releases in contrast, since sales of the two -- combined -- have been irrelevant compared to regular DVD.

I would doubt you'd be seeing anything but very fast sales of the discs to clear out the copies remaining and that's it.

DVDGamer 02-20-08 12:16 PM

The Complete Matrix Trilogy is now $44.95 at Amazon. Beats Best Buy price w no tax and free shipping.

Legend has it that more E.T. cartridges were manufactured than 2600 consoles. Somehow they expected a better than 1:1 sales ratio for the game. Dumb.

I found a few D-VHS tapes at Big Lots for $2 each last year mixed in with the regular VHS's (they were all Artisan titles) so some HD-DVDs might show up there, at least the combo discs.

I have a few I want to return.

Being able to return ones you purchased won't be affected by this, provided it's still within the 30 day policy. The BINC numbers will remain in our system (for a while, I'd assume) if someone cares to order an HD-DVD, they're just not being stocked in stores.

The instructions were to ship the discs back with the monthly pull list, so it'll vary from store to store. Some may send they back right away, others not until early March. Within a month, though, they'll be out of most Borders.

Gizmo 02-20-08 02:09 PM

Good thing Borders takes back just about anything if its still sealed and carried in-store.

Without a receipt?

Yup. Borders would even take back George's bathroom art book as long as they carry it in-store and have a SKU for it.

kahuna 02-20-08 02:19 PM

Amazon.com just drop prices on hd dvd players again. Can't make up my mind between the A30 or A35? I do have a Onkyo 605.

Toshiba HD-A3 - $99.99
Toshiba HD-A30 - $129.99
Toshiba HD-A35 - $220.90

In the HD DVD dead thread there is an article about DVD Empire and Amazon going Blu-ray. Also included is this nice little tidbit...

"In the coming weeks, DVD Empire is planning to put its entire HD DVD inventory on sale. It’s not clear the scale of the discounts that will be offered.

Amazon has not specified upcoming sales. But the site is a well-established spot to find both Blu-ray and HD DVD software deals."
Looking forward to some possible deals...

Ill have a ton of price adjustments from Amazon coming in.

JayDerek 02-20-08 02:40 PM

I'd pick up an A35 if it eventually goes for $100 or so. My HDA1 is still working fine so i'm in no rush to replace it...

I asked for an adjustment on the A3 when it was $109.99. When they approve it, I'll have to say thanks but cough up $10 more.

Not only are you not the only one, you're not even the only Dave.

Yavin 02-20-08 03:23 PM

Looks like no fire sale prices to be had at stores like Future Shop and Best Buy. People are reporting that they're just sending the discs back to the distributor. I'm starting to lean toward ordering online from Amazon.com and DVDEmpire if/when they have some really good deals on titles. But I've never ordered from them before. Since I'm in Canada, what should I expect in terms of shipping and will I be charged customs?

I could see prices may bottom out around $5-6 a disc through various B1G1 offers on the discounted Amazon prices in a few weeks. If so I'd be a buyer again, if not, no big deal as I probably don't need it anyway. The day after Warner announce I listed my A3 on Craigslist for $125 (with $5 HDMI cable from Monoprice) and sold it. I still have the 5 discs coming and will return the other 3 I received to Borders later today.

YMMV...especially since Borders is not going to carry HD-DVD anymore. They would NOT take any of mine back about a month ago.

Dan 02-20-08 03:52 PM

I bought Planet Earth on HD DVD for my brother's birthday at the beginning of the month for about $55 USD on amazon.com. Well, it didn't arrive until 4 days before Toshiba's announcement, so he hadn't even opened it yet. I told him to exchange it at Walmart, since he was complaining that HD was dead. They gave him a $95 CAD store credit! Lucky bastard...

sociopharm02 02-20-08 04:34 PM

Is the A-30 a much better machine than the A-3 ? I already have a 360 add-on but was thinking about getting a stand alone player because we were needing one for our upstairs. Our TV is only 720P, 1080 I , so we would not be able to use the 1080 P output of the A-30. Is it worth the extra 30 bucks for the A-30. Also do you guys think this is going to go much lower in the next month or should I buy now. Thanks

Supermallet 02-20-08 04:36 PM

Was the Onkyo player confirmed to be the A35 with improved DAC's?

kahuna 02-20-08 04:36 PM

A35 is $169.99 with free shipping from Tiger Direct through Amazon.com. To bad they want $32 to ship to Hawaii.

Supermallet 02-20-08 04:45 PM

What's a reasonable price for the XA2?

Hopefully it will drop to $149 or less direct from Amazon.

Then I'll bite :D

Just returned 2 HD DVDs to my Borders on my lunch break. Got $75 back....looks like the store already pulled all the HD DVDs already, only saw Blu-ray movies.

Dude, ubid or overstock. Just got my refurbished XA2 last night for $260 shipped. Remote was brand new and the XA2 does not have a scratch on it. Works wonderful. Could not be happier.

Supermallet 02-20-08 04:57 PM

Ok, now there's a 360 add-on for just under $70, comes with remote, cables, and King Kong.
