is PS3 really the best blu-ray player?

Well, I want to go BD ASAP since the format war is over. Plus, I'm really craving that hi-def release of The Rock. I figured I may as well start with a PS3, since standalone players are likely to drop more than it later, and I'll probably want to play GTA IV or DMC 4; though gaming isn't really my concern, least not til there's an FF7 remake.
My only concern with going PS3 is that I hear they keep revising the hardware, particularly to make it run cooler. This is half the reason I sold the 360 I had; I want one with a 65nm chip. I have to wonder if I'll be wanting to replace a PS3 in less than a year too. I also don't like the idea of a slot loader. I can only assume there haven't been any disc scratching issues though, since everyone still praises the player.

My 40GB PS3 (w/ Spiderman 3) I got in January doesn't run as hot as I'd heard on various forums, so I was pleasantly surprised. And I've had no scratch issues via slot loading -- it's really no different than a CD loader in the car.

Do they do well standing vertically? Any problems??? My meager shelf space is reserved for my upconvert DVD player, my receiver and my cable box. My 360 is standing up and it scratches discs. I would prefer not to have it stand up but I have no choice given my current shelf situation. I am going to buy the next iteration of the PS3 when it comes out with the smaller chipset but wondered if anyone had problems with standing theirs up vertically?

So I returned that.
My nephew then bought a PS3 and we again did the firmware and this time it worked fine. So based on having bought 2 BD players thus far, I'd say the PS3 was the most future proof one as it has an ethernet port (profile 2.0) and thus can do firmware upgrades and PiP (profile 1.1).
On all the other standalones that i saw, getting the higher profiles means an added $100.00 bucks minimum, raising the price to at least $500.00. Which frankly as a fully functional HD-DVD user, was unacceptable to me.
So yeah, go with the PS3.

Really? The likelihood of a Panasonic or a Pioneer player coming down to below $500 by the end of June with Profile 2.0 ... not probable?
edit: Am I really gonna have to buy a PS3 just to play movies?

Though I admit that I did end up with a game or two and play them occasionally.

The 2nd go-round with my nephews PS3, we did use the game controller.
BTW I went back to Best Buy and got myself another PS3. Seeing as how I only occasionally have access to my nephews PS3. Again, the firware update was flawless, (and yes I did use the game controller.

The Pioneer player is expected to have an MSRP around $1000, but I haven't seen so much as a rumor about the release date. The good news there is that Pioneer is reportedly shooting for a 10 second boot time and the current 1.0 player seems to be very well regarded. But way too expensive for ordinary folks like me.
That seems to be it for 2.0 players in the first half of 2008, save for the PS3. Funai is reported to be working on an inexpensive player but I'd be very surprised if it was 2.0. Oppo is also working on BD player but it is in the preliminary design stage. Oppo fans might want to hang tight and wait.
