Semi-rhetorical question:

What's the turnaround time between a studio submitting a mastered title to the manufacturer and having that title ready to ship to stores?

I ask this because I'm curious about how long it will take Paramount and Dreamworks to re-issue their previous Blu-Ray releases once they make a decision.

It took them like twenty years just to release it on standard DVD.

Luckily, I swapped all my WB hd-dvds for BDs when WB switched to BD.

For my WB hd-exclusives, universal and paramount hd-dvds, it will be a more gradual process. I wont be switching them right away unless its one of my favorite titles.

I have some hd-dvds that arent on bluray and probably wont be for a while (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Equilibrium, Running Scared) and alot of homemade hd-dvds, so Im not getting rid of my A3 player. So, im not opposed to keeping them a little while longer. Plus, resale is gonna be harder since hd-dvd is dead now.

I bet it will be over a year or 2 process.

i can't tell if you're joking or not, but there's no way it should take that long. he asked about the titles that they had previously released on blu-ray, so the encodes are already done. all they have to do is get them replicated and distributed again.

There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 titles that Paramount and Universal released exclusively on HD DVD; do you really think they're going to flood the market -- aside from with the newer releases they're invariably going to be putting out -- with all of that in one or two fell swoops?

No. It's going to be a long process before we see all of their HD DVD releases on Blu-ray, assuming it ever happens. Hell, too many of Universal's HD DVD releases seemed like shovelware to fill a quota as it was.

Im not joking.

I bet they will do them slowly over the next year or 2. I dont think they can do this overnight. We will start to see some trickle out soon though.

Plus, they may be using some to re-encode/add features or help market a sequel or something.

That was mine concern as well. I'm sure they'll keep putting out new releases but catalog stuff is going to be a huge question mark.

Universal could make out the best on this deal by sitting back and releasing the same exact catalog titles over the next two years, saving the big titles for a larger market.

I do think Universal / Paramount are going to try to get their heavy hitters on Blu-Ray as soon as possible... hell we know Transformers is already coming to Blu eventually. I fully expect to see the Bourne movies, American Gangster, and hopefully a redone King Kong with the extended cut before the end of the year.

I think it will be awhile before the older, lesser known catalog titles start dropping, but we will definitely see the biggest movies on HD-DVD hit Blu Ray pretty damn fast.

I hope they release them soon.... and that they aren't an arm and a leg. If the format war had ended sooner, I would have just bought a BD player. But with 2.0 due in the Fall, I'm holding off.

So that if/when it does become official, then that can be covered in this thread. It's inevitable, no?

the original question was about Paramount titles that had previously been released on Blu-ray, not Paramount and Universal titles that were released exclusively on HD DVD. i agree 100% with every you just said regarding the HD DVD-exclusive titles, but that's a separate thing entirely.

no problem. considering how much action this thread is getting, it is tough to follow every line of conversation. i guess i'm not helping with this mostly unnecessary post.

Yeah, I thought you were talking about Paramount/Dreamworks titles on hd-dvd only. Sorry for the confusion. I need to read more good.
