Their catalog titles were all over the map.

I guess it depends. I knew to stay away from Traffic and Spartacus but titles like Out of Sight and Lost in Translation looked great.

I'm sure Universal will go Blu and I hope they do soon to appease the O' Mighty One that we may soon get Jaws released.
I'd say overall, Universal leans towards good to fantastic. Now, this is because I take the following titles from my own favorites. These aren't ALL releases by Universal, so if all were rated, then the scales would tip. But anyway:

Some bad ones: American Me. Bone Collector. The River. Sea Of Love. Traffic.

Some good ones: The Frighteners. the Kingdom. The Mummy. Sea Biscuit (not as great--quality wise--as many have reviewed it to be). Casino (great movie, but Scorsese's grainy touch).

Some great ones: Deer Hunter. Dante's Peak (actually looked great). Dune (amazing.). Hot Fuzz. Fearless. Mummy Returns. Out Of Sight. Chronicles Of Riddick. Serenity. The Thing.

Universal (& Paramount) Announcement Soon

Speculation is that both Universal and Paramount will make announcements as early as Tuesday following Toshiba's press conference announcing an end to HD-DVD.

It should be interesting! We won't be waiting very long for a change of format.

Other poor ones include The Watcher and The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Any links to this speculation? Is it from Blu-ray.com?

Don't mind that. But I hope it doesn't delay already announced releases of There Will Be Blood and Sweeney Todd.

this discussion cracks my ass up. do you really think that if there is a POTENTIAL for money to be made, universal is not going to release movies on bluray ?? because they might be mad at sony ??? SERIOUSLY ???!?!!??!?!? people this is not a fight with your best friend or your girlfriend....universal studios has investors to answer to and if it is in the best interest of those involved (i.e. opportunity to make money) than that is EXACTLY what they are going to do.

I will guarantee you when the toshiba announcement comes down, universal execs will be discussing the next day, if not sooner, how long until they can have bluray discs in stores. given how far behind the eight ball they are, it may not be until the late fall or winter

I'd buy "Cat People" on Blu-ray.

I'd buy "Timecop" on Blu-ray.

Already did on HD

MOD NOTE: Since Universal has commented that it will start Blu production, closing thread. Adding this comment to this post only b/c I don't want to bump this thread. -namja
