1408 on Blu-Ray - is this legit?

I've never heard of this retailer...and NONE of the major retailers that I've searched have this title listed.

XPloited Cinema is a reputable seller of imported HDM. No worries there.

argh923 01-24-08 10:54 PM

Given that it's an import, what differences am I looking it between a US BRD and it? (I've never bought an imported movie before)

Drexl 01-24-08 11:02 PM

I would try to find out about the extras. If they're in PAL you'd be unable to watch them. If that wouldn't matter to you it would be fine.

emachine12 01-24-08 11:32 PM

Its a BD, PAL and NTSC don't matter since the extras are on the same disc as the film.

The only problem would be if the HD transfers were taken from a PAL source. That would cause pitch issues. So far, only Studio Canal has had this problem. No other European distributors have the problem.

-

Only major differences would be language and subtitle options.

argh923 01-24-08 11:58 PM

I don't care about the subtitles...the film says it's in English, though, so that would mean no language differences, right?

Arpeggi 01-25-08 12:00 AM

Yeah even though it says it's in English, it's actually in Greek!

Drexl 01-25-08 12:01 AM

Even though they're on the same disc, if they're in standard definition, the video still is encoded as PAL or NTSC.

If the extras are in HD, then it would be different.

Its not jsut subtitles is forced subtitles that are the issue. Usually though the movies are put out with their native language as a track. You may have some issues with the Menus being in the native language, but with some releases (ie Studio Canal) have an option to select which language you want the menus in.

From what I saw on HDD the HD DVD version has subtitles that can be turned off when listening to the English language track. So that may also hold true for this release.

Eh...if this is the case, I'll wait for a US release...not willing to take the chance. Thanks!

Someone's gotta take one for the team.... so to speak :D

Mercury&Solace 01-25-08 12:43 AM

Xploited absolutely rocks! Great service. I love my T2 HD DVD!

wewantflair 01-25-08 04:46 AM

If this had forced subtitles, xploited would say so like they do with T2 theatrical cut. Xploited is probably the best niche DVD retailer around.

Quake1028 01-25-08 07:17 AM

Several people on other forums have the HD DVD version already, and that version has no forced subtitles (subs are present at the start of the movie but easy to turn off).

argh923 01-25-08 08:29 AM

Yeah, but what about the original menus? If those aren't in English...pass.

Steve Phillips 01-25-08 09:34 AM

English menus.

Tony always lists all the details in the item description; if something has forced subs or no subs, etc, it will say so right there.

Orders always ship within 24 hours and often same day of order; I can't recommend them (Xploited) highly enough.

argh923 01-25-08 11:55 AM

Alright...I'll take a shot. Are they good with returns?

argh923 01-25-08 02:07 PM

Shipped within 2 hours...that's impressive.

Return = get full refund.
Selling = not get full refund.

bunkaroo 01-25-08 05:30 PM

There is a disclaimer on the product page that he cannot accept returns due to player incompatibility. I think that's fair, considering it costs him money just to import this stuff.

Their return policy is stated on the site, and is typical for media. Unopened = full refund. Opened has to be defective for a refund. Now, if the menus are goofy or the movie is unplayable, I suppose you could make an argument that the disc is defective, but I think these import Blu-Ray's are definitely buyer beware.

True_Story1011 01-25-08 05:32 PM

return - may not take them, should have asked questions prior to purchase.
sell - may be only resort if not pleased.

was only offering, apologies for your troubles.

Not really. Quote:

Any item that is still sealed can be returned for a full refund (minus shipping costs). Any opened item can only be returned if the item is defective.

Gizmo 01-26-08 12:12 PM

I got my HD DVD of The Graduate from them in like 4 days.

dyerjp 01-27-08 10:50 AM

they are pretty fast, it took 2 days for my band of brothers HD-DVD's to arrive

argh923 01-27-08 11:03 AM

Yeah, it looks like 1408 will get here on Monday. Pretty cool.

maingon 01-27-08 12:54 PM

I love them I have ordered about 8 HD-DVDs from them so far and they always fast and reliable

Arpeggi 01-27-08 01:06 PM

Best online store ever.

Eric D. 01-27-08 01:18 PM

I got my "1408" BD from Tony last night. The menus are all in english and they are pop up. I haven't watched the disc in it's entirety yet, but from what I scanned through it looked and sounded pretty good. I was also excited to see "The Mist" listed in the trailer section. Hopefully Dutch Filmworks will release that on BD and HD DVD as well. My only problems were that my player (BDP-S300) could not play any of the special features aside from the trailers. But this may be because I have yet to upgrade to the 3.70 firmware, which I will do later today.

And for the record, Xploited is a great site and it's where I get all my imports from.

gumpaholic 01-27-08 03:16 PM

I ordered this from them on Thursday and I asked them beforehand if the disc is really region free and they wrote right back saying:

hi!
it's been tested in 3 region A blu-ray players and it plays fine. i haven't
heard definite confirmation regarding PS3's, but the disc is definitely All
Region so it should play fine.
thanks!
tony

Hopefully, I'll get it in a couple of days!

Awesome...thanks for the info!

I will know for sure about the PS3 when I get it, since that's my BR player.

As I said before, it's probably because they're in PAL. If that's the case, unless Sony decides to add PAL playback to the player (if that's even possible in a firmware update), you won't be able to watch them.

emachine12 01-28-08 11:49 AM

Drexl...

Dutch Filmworks framed the 576i resolution special features in a 1080i pillarboxed. That means that despite being "PAL" resolution, any player capable will be able to view these extras.

Pretty much, most extras on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD are presented in standard definition but pillarboxed at 1080i,

From this review:

De extra’s zijn in 576i SD beeldkwaliteit en worden getoond in een 1080i HD beeldkader.

Translated by Babelfish.Altavista:

The extra's to be in 576i SD picture quality and are shown in 1080i HD picture framework.

A couple of other people have reported being able to access the special features on other US Blu-ray Players.

I don't think that's the case. I was under the assumption that there is no difference between PAL and NTSC on Blu-ray. I'm pretty sure I just have to update my player, but I could be wrong.

As for if the extras will play, I'll know for sure in a week when the update disc gets shipped to me. I tried to do it yesterday, but the BDP-S300 can't be connected to the internet and I don't have a PC to burn a disc.

CKMorpheus 01-28-08 05:01 PM

What's the directors cut like? How different?

mike2 01-28-08 05:30 PM

I preferred the Theatrical over the directors. Basically It's the opposite of what happened @ the end. Not sure how much spoilers you want. Maybe someone else will enlighten you.

If that's the case, then yes, they should be playable if they're upscaled to HD. However, I know that many extras on US discs are stored at 480i. Is this not NTSC?
