Questions about HD Media

So I know that film doesn't have a "resolution" so the PQ can still be better than what is offered on HD/Blu.

1. But is the PQ...(edit:resolution) from HD Cameras capped at 1080p?

2. Also what do they use to film on HD Cameras, HD DV tapes or something?

Basically I'm wondering what they use to film TV shows either dramas or talk shows that allow them to be HD.

Because I assume stuff like Jay Leno isn't filmed on...film, but probably tape, etc, and since it's offered in HD, its obviously better than traditional DV or whatever.

1. Yes, for now. I'm not aware of any higher-resolution non-animated movies besides Corpse Bride, which was shot with a still camera of a much higher resolution.

2. It's tape. Zodiac was the first film where the raw data was captured to hard disk and the movie was produced without tape in the process (except for archival backups of the camera footage, which wasn't used in the editing). Here's a technical article about it: http://digitalcontentproducer.com/vi...oing_tapeless/

As for shows, some are shot on film (such as Lost). I believe talk shows have always been shot on video, whether it be SD or HD.

Ah thanks Drexl...that leads to another question.

For Talk shows, and sports broadcasts, they are shown in HD and Standard Def. I heard they used separate cameras, is this still the case? I assume so, since I don't know if live compression of HD footage would look that good, if they used the same HD feed.

Edit: Also, this is sort of a venn diagram question:

Are all HD TVs 16x9?

But not all 16x9 televisions are HD right?

Is/was all programming in 16x9 at 720 or higher, or do they have the WS bars when showing them on 4:3 480 resolutions?
