I'm getting into blu ray now. i actually bought a 40g ps33, not open yet. should i return for an 80g what are all of the differences for a game machine and a blu ray player? thanks for any help

the only difference is the 40 gb won't play ps2 games. if that matters to you, take it back. if not, keep it.

Negative. If you want it strictly as a Blu-Ray player, you've got no worries. If you want to play a few games on the side then it's not a bad investment either. The question is if you're going to go back to ps2 format you'll be stuck.

Congrats on making the jump to Blu. You won't regret it. Keep an eye out for all the deals going on as well. Also check out amazons sale. Many BD's are less than $20.

Act soon if you want the 80GB version. Sony already killed the 80GB in Japan I believe and soon it will be the PS2-less 40GB everywhere.

I'm shifting towards BD, so will likely get a PS3 this month.

I don't really need PS2 compatibility, as I never owned a PS2. But I do have a few PS2 games and demos, and like to "be prepared", so I guess I want the 60gig version.

Anyone know if the 60gig has these features from the 80gig?

The 60ggig has all of these features, but it has been discountinued. you might be able top find one, but its not likely. Your best bet is to go with the 80gig.

i bought the 80gig over the 40gig because of it has motorstorm. that game is really fun!

Maybe the 80gig would be better for me. 20 more gig, a game, and guess I only lose the full compatibility that I don't even need.

The 80GB gives you 99% (approx) backwards compatibility... the games it won't play, you most likely don't WANT to play...
The 80GB also has 4 front USB ports... very handy
The 80GB also has the multi-card readers for the memory cards out of digital cameras.
The 80GB comes with MotorStorm (never even opened mine though..addicted to Warhawk)

All that for $100 more? (If you want the pack-in BluRay with the 40GB, Spiderman, just buy it...)

I believe the 80GB only has 85-90% backwards compatibility which is still a lot and most games you would want to play. The 60GB had 99%.

I'm not a gamer, so the 40G was perfect for me to get Blu-ray playback capability for the time being. It's nearly 2.0 Profile-compliant, and can be made so with future firmware upgrades.

I figure if a better solution comes along that is 2.0 and includes both Blu and HD DVD playback, I can always sell the PS3.

That 80GB system is pretty scarce. I went looking for it this past weekend and NO ONE had it in stock. Ended up getting it through Best Buy calling their customer service (griped because it was said to be in stock in several B&M locations online and it wasn't). They shipped it and gave me the triple reward points I'd have gotten in store.

I bought the 80GB because of the 4 USB ports and memory card slots. Although I enjoy gaming, I use my nextgen console primarily for multimedia. Having those additional ports/slots is a big help.

There's only $100 difference between the 40 and 80. A few people I know bought the 40 and within days of owning it, started asking about USB hubs. A good powered USB hub costs about $40-$50. That's half the price difference already. Just something to consider.

my question is about firmware updates to the ps3. do you have to have an internet connection handy to update the firmware. i think i might like to get the ps3 but i won't have an internet connection handy to update. will that be a big deal?

You can download the updates onto a PC and then transfer the update to the PS3 via a USB memory stick. I usually do that and it works like a charm.

For anyone interested, when I bought my 40g PS3 last weekend, FYE (at Discover Mills in Atl,GA) had 40g, 60g, and 80g PS3's.

So, if you're looking for one of the rarer ones, I'd recommend checking out an FYE.

Don't know what I would need USB ports and memory card slots for. Got the 1 USB port that silly controller plugs into so I have something to use for a remote since one wasn't provided.

The slots and ports can be used for additional or removable storage vis USB hard drive or multimedia cards from cameras, etc. I use my SD slot to take my Canon photos on an SD card and copy them to my hard drive for viewing later. There are also peripherals like printers, cameras, keyboards, etc. that can be attached. Like sracer, I use my PS3 more for multimedia, although I do like "Warhawking" as much as possible! Can't wait for Burnout Paradise City next week - playing the heck out of the demo!
