Is it Inevitable That Studios Will Double Dip On Blu Ray Discs?
I watched apocalypto again last night and thought how bare bones this movie continues to be. And I know theres many more. So do you guys think that eventually that they will start making SE's and Extended and Unrated versions on Blu Ray, since it's such a big money maker?

Inevitable? Yes without a doubt.
All that's left to figure out is which titles and how soon.
Fox seems the most likely to do this, but remember they left some non-anamorphic DVD's out there from the early days that were never double-dipped. Broken Arrow, True Lies and Strange Days are just a few.

Most certianly yes. It's why I am being very selective in what new titles I buy or upgrade from SD DVD. I have no doubt that some big name titles will get better releases when sequels come out or enough time passes to want to get the title on the new release shelf again.

I'm fairly certain Fox will double-dip on quite a few of their titles. WB technically already has with Full Metal Jacket. Sony will double-dip with Spider-Man 1 & 2.

I think a few titles NEED a double-dip. Terminator 2 is one that sticks out in my mind.

I've learned my lesson. Those titles that come out extras light or with a subpar transfer will definitely have re-releases. I'll wait, since chances are I already own that title on DVD unless it's a new release.

For sure... however, unlike DVD where I'd double dip for 'more extras' and 'extended cuts' that I ended up watching once or sometimes never watching, unless they do a new transfer that is a night and day difference or a totally new cut of a favourite movie, I'm vowing to not double dip on HDM... When I think of all the versions on dvd I upgraded and never watched, it makes my wallet sad...

Mo' money, mo' money! That's why even though I bought Kingdom of Heaven, Hellboy, and Black Hawk Down Blu-Ray, I kept my DVD SE's for all the extra content, even if I never watch it!

Punisher directors cut immediately comes to mind.

It's what studios do. But it has nothing to do with HD versus SD, or anything else. It's just an established business model that they have seen to be profitable over the past 10 years, so it is a safe bet that it will continue.

I used to double-dip SD-DVDs for incremental improvements in picture and audio, like the aforementioned Superbits (The Patriot and The Fifth Element for example). With HD media, I am buying less first of all, but with how good many of these HD releases look and sound in the first place, it would take a heck of a lot to get me to double-dip on HD media. I rarely if ever double-dip for more extras, as I just never seem to watch extras (and hardly have time to watch the movies themselves...).

This is probably another area which has been positively affected by the format war. Given that so many early releases (and a fair number since) were so poor in one or more areas, it doesn't take a whole lot to imagine studios planning their inevitible double-dips for years to come. With two formats struggling to compete, we've already seen several studios go from releasing crappy barebones titles to more fully-loaded versions with more advanced specs. And, of course, there was that "Fifth Element" disc which wound up being replaced when so many complained about the awful PQ on the initial release. Had there been nothing to compare those early titles to (other than HD channels and DVHS), studios could've dished out platters of dookie for some time before double-dipping with better encodes, abundant special features, and super special holographic foil slipcover cases with wings.
Oh -- I mean, yes, they will double dip.

I'm actually surprised that the director's cut of Terminator 2 hasn't been released yet.

Unrated cuts, director's cuts, super duper editions with fancy packaging, the BD-Live editions, etc. If the studios smell an extra buck they will double and triple dip without abandon. A good question would be what will be the first triple-dip? Fifth Element already has 2 editions so that's my bet.

This is why I'm not bothering to go to the trouble of replacing WB HD-dvds for Blu-Ray discs. Probably most, if not all, of the titles released so far will be rereleased in the future.
Don't think that some studios havn't figured out to hold back extras and/or better audio tracks to resell stuff in the future.
