Quality of the Brotherhood of the Wolf (UK Import) HD-DVD?

Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of my favorite movies and I was thinking about getting the import version. I've seen mixed reviews regarding picture quality. Hi-def Digest said it was very good (one of the best catalog titles it claimed) but I've seen blogs and such that said it was not good at all.

Can first hand fans / owners of the film give me the scoop?

Thanks!

When I first popped it in I was mildly disappointed, -I found the picture a bit "harsh". It was bright and a bit grainy, but it lacked the kind of "depth" you see in the better HD-DVDs. However, when I compared it to the Canadian SD DVD package from years back, -which looked pretty good to me at the time, -I found that the HD version was an improvement (though it lacks all the extra features).

I have it and I think it has exceptional PQ for a catalog title. I also have it on SD DVD, and when I did a side by side comparison the difference was like night and day.

Also, although not advertised (at least properly) the HD-DVD is the 152 minute Director's Cut, a better version in my opinion, so the title is totally worth picking up if you're a fan of the film.

I've got it, and although some of the candlelit interior scenes are a little grainy, I think that's from the way it was filmed. The exterior and other well-lit scenes look fantastic.

I remember pausing a few times in the forest scenes... you can clearly see every leaf!

Also, the sound is DTS-HD MA, which sounds phenomenal if you have the right setup to decode it.

I can't imagine it getting any better, it's great.

I have this as well. As others have stated, both the PQ and AQ are outstanding. I also have the Canadian 3-disc set, which is a little soft even compared to the US SD version.

If anyone has an extra copy, I'll take it

Or where can it be purchased?

www.xploitedcinema.com

Always quick and excellent service.

And no, I don't own the site or get kickbacks.

What's the shipping cost?

Do they ship to Canada?

the Canadian edition might be a tad soft, but the DTS track is a killer

would love to hear the DTS-MA track on the HD-DVD edition!!!

As far as purchasing, I've seen it on the DVDTalk trade threads occasionally. That's how I got mine for $15 shipped

You got extremely lucky.

I have a hard time finding it mentioned here.

I don't know, but I don't see why they wouldn't.

They are located in the states (Ohio I believe), so I would think it wouldn't be much to ship it to Canada. They are extremely fair with shipping costs.

I think the PQ has it's highs and lows. Some scenes look freakin amazing while others look like crap. But overall I would certainly recommend it.

The grain on the candle-lit scenes is intentional, I'm pretty sure. That seems to be the way Gans shoots things - Crying Freeman has it, Silent Hill has it...

But overall, the film looks to me, on HD, as it did in the theater. The Canadian 3-disc set and the US original release were both definitely imperfect. The Canadian was not the highest pq I've seen, but not bad by any means, and the US pq was better, but it was a cut version of the film, and the DTS track and extras were missing.

This is one of my fave films...I had the French 3-disc before the Canadian came out (and understood most of it, even though I can't speak French, I can understand some of it) and loved it. I jumped on the HD as soon as I got a player, and I'm not disappointed with it at all. I kept my Canadian 3-disc, because of the fantastic extras. If you want just the movie, you can't go wrong with the HD disc.

As I posted in the other thread, it is, indeed, the long cut of the film, despite the many many packaging mistakes.

Thanks for the help guys. I ordered the disc (which was sent out about 9 minutes after I ordered.. xploitedcinema is fast!)

I do plan on keeping my Canadian 3-disc also, I want those extras still.
