Well, the flash drive didn't work; the PS3 won't recognize that there's any update file present on the device, even though I followed the directions to a tee. Any suggestions on how to get this damn movie to play?

Considering that Blu-Rays have reached a point where newer releases are simply going to be incompatible (whether partially or entirely) with some BR hardware, it seems odd that studios can't or won't include the latest firmware updates (at the time of pressing, at least) right on the disc. Not everyone has the ability to get their player online to download updates, and this approach really screws consumers.

Sunshine played fine on my Samsung 1400, ~1min load time. Same annoyance as Res Evil Extinction though, if you let pause time out, it stops the disc with no resume, you have to run through the whole startup. I don't know if that's a player or disc issue.

Could it have anything to do with it being an mp3 player than doubles as a usb storage device? I'm hoping updates via usb drives will work, because I have a Kingston 2 GB USB Data Traveller, and I was hoping to use that to transfer my firmware updates.

Problems like those in this thread is exactly why I won't be making the jump to Blu-Ray anytime soon. I put an HD DVD disc in my player - it plays.

Unless it's a combo.

HD DVD has had its fair share of issues with playback that had to be corrected with firmware.

Don't generalize the whole format because of isolated issues. Guess no one's ever had issues with HD-DVD combo discs? Like this most recent one:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=957410

Cosmic Bus, you might want to try a dedicated flash drive for the update. I had no problem updating a couple of people's PS3's with my SanDisc Cruzer thumbdrive.

Cosmic Bus...

Any USB drive device has to be formatted as FAT32 or the PS3 will not see it.

Hmm, I'm not given an option for FAT32, just a general format; it may not be possible to do on this player (an older Sansa Sandisk 1GB). Since I'm not about to go buy a dedicated flash drive just so this guy can update his PS3 from time to time, he'll just have to bring it to my apartment to do in person. Gotta be kind of frustrating, though, I would think: not knowing if a movie he buys is actually going to work right off or not.

I have a duo player and all the HD combo discs play without problem. The only problem I have are with some blu-ray discs. It's very frustrating and it makes me not want to buy blu-ray at all in case there are more problems.

What seems "odd" is that the studios think this is the superior format.

Just watched this movie on my Panasonic BD30k. It sputtered a few times (3 IIRC). But, they were so minor it didn't detract from the movie at all.

BTW, this was a amazingly fantastic movie. Heard good things about it before, but man, I'm glad I checked it out.

What a bizarre but damn good film.

Same thing happened when I tried to watch the movie last week. Except halfway through the movie we had to pause and when we came back it wouldn't load. We restarted the PS3 and 'scene selection' nor 'fast-forwarding' worked. So we sat for 20 minutes while the PS3 updated itself :P

I just think Samsung makes crappy players. Yet they have the 2nd highest market share for BD standalones. Maybe 2008 is when they'll get their act together.

Not all their stuff is crap. My BD 1000 & BD Up5000 have played everything I've thrown their way with only one hiccup (RE: Extinction on the 5000 & Pan's Labyrinth HD. Extinction played fine on the 1000 as did Sunshine and Pan's HD played fine on the A2). The problem I see is that they are way too hit and miss for the money. If anything, their quality control process is for crap, and the delay in update availability is a major Sukkeee.

OK, I'm the originator of this thread and when I started it a week or two ago I was just starting to have trouble with Sunshine after having previous trouble playing Pirates of the Carribean: AWE and Live Free - Die Hard.

Well now, I can't play 3:10 to Yuma or The Pixar Shorts. This is getting completely ridiculous. I've gotten to the point where I put the disk in the Samsung player cross my fingers that anything is going to work.

It's been a couple more weeks and still no hint at when a Firmgrade Update is coming. What could be taking so long? I'm not even assured that when the Firmgrade Update comes out it will correct all these problems. Do I need to go buy the Standard version of these movies to at least get to watch them?

Is there anyone I can complain to that will care or do something about it.?

I agree. In Germany they were consistently placed next to AKAI. A second grade company at best.

I bought a sony bdp-s1 last week, updated the firmware to 3.60, tried to play sunshine tonight, and it will load the menu screen, but won;t play, or allow me to select anything. I read through the thread, and the general concensus was samsung sucks, but it wont play on my sony either. Do i call fox for a new disc?

A new disc won't help you. All the discs are the same. You'll have to wait for another firmware update for your player.
