I guess to achieve this right now with Blu-ray, I'd need to get the BD30, but there are trade-offs there as well.
I'm right there with ya. I have a XA2 and Onkyo 605 and it's great that I can decode DTS HD-MA tracks. Granted, I only own 2 titles that have them, La Haine and Pan's Labyrinth. But having that option is what matters.

For DTS HD-MA, I have Pan's, the Dutch Reservoir Dogs, and the UK Brotherhood of the Wolf......all are awesome.

Actually I forgot about another one(maybe). I have Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up Live which I thought only had a lossy DTS-HD track, but the receiver shows DTS HD-MA on the display.

So, what firmware version can I expect a 40 GB PS3 bought new off the shelf today to have? I don't suppose the firmware revision that is required for Profile 1.1 would be already included straight out of the box, would it?

Probably not since that's the latest firmware(2.1). But it only takes about 5-10 minutes to download it.

Ok, I have another inane question ... how large are these firmware updates, usually? The reason I'm asking is because I have a 2 GB USB thumb drive that I was planning to use for updating the firmware, and I was wondering if it would all fit on there.

Doesn't the PS3 have built-in WiFi? I've read elsewhere, that if you have a wireless network running in your house, it will do automatic updates almost on it's own.....any truth to this?

You have to burn them on a disc, thumb drives won't work.

As per the file size...usually under 100MB.
Easily fits on a CDR.

Yes and no. All PS3s on the market right now have built-in WiFi. The discontinued 20GB version does not.

However you still have to tell the PS3 to look for an update as it won't do it my itself. This can be triggered by going to the 'System Update' icon, or trying to connect to the PSN and it will tell you your system is out of date and to update.

I'm not sure if this is true or not. I always download the update directly to the system but I believe there is a way to create a "system" file and then put the download in there.

I just checked the Playstation site, and it says that I just need to create a folder on a USB mass storage device called "PS3", download the firmware update into that folder, and then plug it into the PS3.

I thought you could do this. But it is really much easier to do if you have your PS3 hardwired or at least connected via Wifi.

PS3 updates work 100% PERFECT from a memory stick, no need to waste a CD-R. Best bet is to just plug it into your network or use the built in WiFi.

Thumbdrives do work for the FW updates. I just did two this week.

Yep, you have to make an UPDATE folder inside a PS3 folder (both named with all uppercase) on the root of the disc/HD/flash drive your using and put the downloaded file in it.

The procedure is listed here and it's very simple:

I agree with dsa_shea - just use your internet connection for the easiest. Follow the steps at the PS3 site for putting the update on media if you go that route. As long as you create the PS3 folder on it (and make sure it's formatted FAT32, not NTFS), you can use a thumb drive.

BTW Yavin, welcome to the PS3 owner community - I own a 60GB myself, updated to firmware 2.10. I am eventually going to update the drive to a 160GB and copy all 60GB+ of music onto it, maximizing it as a media server. I also own a PSP, and using Remote Play is a snap.

raven56706...

Where are you getting your "information"? The issue with DTS HD MA is licensing and not being able to send the signal as a bitstream. The issue should be resolved in a future firmware update.

Wow! Thanks guys. This thread helps A LOT!

Since BD player purchases will probably increase in the coming months, may I suggest a MOD sticky this? It sure is helpful.

I was in BB this afternoon and they had a managers special price of $369.99 for the 40gb. Would this be considered a fair price? I don't have any PS2 games so backwards compatibility is moot.

I was hoping. It is really the only missing feature I want in the PS3.

On the switcher I'd suggest getting a 3X or 4X switcher. Not much more money and will allow you to future proof a little. Plus I'm pretty sure the 4X has remote which will integrate with a universal remote. I have the 5X monoprice switcher and love it. At first I thought I'd never use 5X, but I had four filled up for a while (but even tho OTA HD is better then Dish, I didn't think enough so to keep my OTA Tuner, so out it came).

Oh and yea...you will need another cable, none comes with the switcher.
Thanks!
