The screen goes black if it doesn't support it, then returns after about 15-30 seconds.

Ah, ok. So I take it if the screen returns in a few seconds and the setting is still set to "On" when it returns then my TV does support the setting? Thanks!

No problem Yavin! With any option in the PS3, turn it on to see what affect it has. If you see a difference that you prefer then leave it on, if not, just change it back. No choice is destructive.

Okay - got my 80GB PS3 set up this weekend and have a question. Went to watch Star Trek: First Contact with DTS and wasn't able to get it to work. Does the PS3 not support DTS? DD 5.1 worked fine. Do I have something setup up wrong? Admittedly, I am a little confused by the Blu-ray/DVD setup menu settings. Ideas?

Can you change PS3 video settings while you're watching a movie? I haven't tried this yet and wasn't sure if you could only do it from the PS3 home menu. It would be nice to immediately see the difference between having superwhite turned on or turned off (as well as other settings).

The PS3 will pass DTS to your receiver. I think you set the audio settings on the PS3 to pass bitstream for that to work. Are you using HDMI for audio or a digital optical cable? If the optical cable, you need to set DTS as one of the supported formats on a screen that will come up during the process.

^^ So with HDMI, I'm pretty sure you need to set the audio to pass Bitstream to get DTS to your receiver. I definitely have my PS3 sending DTS to the receiver via HDMI.

Yes you can. I couldn't see any difference at all with superwhite on. It was fun to play with the upscaling options to see the difference.

So, am I crazy in completely ignoring games for the PS3? With a backlog of about 80 DS and PSP games I'm thinking the last thing I need is to buy games for a new console. I'm just being tempted by some of those titles, like Resistance and Time Crisis 4, but I really only bought the PS3 for the movies and that's it. Is anyone else completely ignoring the gaming aspect of the PS3 and only using it for movies, or am I just crazy?

I've only had mine a week, but my friend is calling me an idiot for not joining him and my other friend online to play Call of Duty 4. But seriously, I just bought it to play Blu-rays. I will probably get into the gaming aspects of it eventually though. I just don't need another time-sucking hobby right now!

I did the same thing. When I traded some movies to FYE, I had $40 in store credit. I decided to use it to buy COD4 for PS3, first game I've bought in years. Absolutely love it, so far. I would say try that first, it'll be worth the $$$.

I would buy the ps3 for movies only too since I am a pc gamer. I seem to use the psp for that purpose also. haha

Yeah, I've settled on doing this also. I'm selling the game I got free with the system tomorrow. $50 to $60 bucks a game is not something I want to get sucked into again. If I get bored I'll dip into my DS and PSP backlog.

Besides, I figure that my PS3 will probably last longer if I don't use it for playing games for hours on end but rather only use it a few times a week to watch a few movies.

R&C is the one I'm selling ... am I crazy? I read the reviews and I looked at some YouTube videos of the game in action, but I just didn't feel the urgent need to play the game after doing so.

Nope, couldn't decide whether to keep or sell it, so I didn't open it. Figured I could get more if I sold it still sealed anyway.

You can download the demo for free from the PlayStation store!!!! That nailed it for me - it is incredible.

I might end up just trading Ratchet & Clank Future for Resistance: Fall of Man. Something about the grittier nature of RFOM attracts me more to it, but I've been hearing some bad things about the graphics in RFOM (that they're not next-gen enough).

EDIT: Screw it, I've been going back-and-forth and back-and-forth about whether to ignore games on PS3 and just focus on Blu-Ray movies or not. But I just saw BB's new flyer for the week and they have Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 and Rainbow Six Vegas free with the system this week. I'm just going to go return the copy of R&CF:ToD that I got last week, get these two games, and then pick up Resistance: Fall of Man as well.
