What is the point of rebuying the same titles on Blu-ray?

I fully understand that HD-DVDs can still be watched on my HD-DVD player, that they won't explode and whatnot, but I just think it's impractical to keep the discs for the long term, especially when most, if not all, the HD-DVD titles will be released on Blu-ray sooner of later.

Two or three years from now, I imagine I will have BD players in several rooms in the house. Replacing my HD-DVDs with Blu-rays would let me watch them where I please, maybe even bring it over to a friend's house to watch. I wouldn't be chained to my one HD-DVD player.

Now, I don't have a lot of HD-DVDs to begin with - just twenty - and I won't be running out to buy Blu-rays until I get a BD player, which could be a while. For the time being, I plan on selling off my HD-DVDs while the going prices are still decent. I have plenty of DVDs to keep me occupied for a long time, and they all look great upconverted on my A2, which I will be keeping for that very purpose.

In my case I'm only doing it for titles that are equal on both formats and that I can buy at or under $10 because I know I can probably get $10 for the HD DVD.

My HD DVD collection is still small at around 70 discs and if BD will be my focus going forward I would rather have as many discs as possible in that format.

As posted above I may end up with BD players in every room if they become cheap enough, but may only have one player to watch my small HD DVD collection on.

That said if there ends up being an HD DVD fire sale at some point this may all become moot. I will buy this like crazy if they get blown out at $5 or less.

I still watch my THX box set (<--note my wild assumption you know what that means) a couple times a year. LD is alive and well for movies that DVD ignored.

Of course, it's really not the same kind of situation for HDDVD. One, it isn't dead yet. Two, it has only been around for a few months, not 20+ years. Three, there aren't really that many movies.

My problem here is not desire but time. I love movies, but I have little time to watch them. I like to have options when I do get the chance, so I have always had a large unwatched DVD pile ... and likewise, I now have 20 HD-DVDs, only 1 of which I have opened. Not sure that 20 HD-DVD movies warrants dropping extra cash for combo players for years to come.

Yes, I am very familiar what that means ... in fact, I still have a sealed 2nd copy of it. To add to it, I dropped an extra $1k on a Receiver, after I started buying DVDs, to get one with the special AC-3 input (if you know what THAT means). In order to continue to accomodate my Laserdisc players on newer receivers, I have had to buy additional special equipment to handle AC-3 ... so in a way, I am still paying for Laserdiscs, almost a decade later.

Agreed. These are very different situations, and although it may not be an apples to apples comparison, I believe there is still information that is relevant. My friends still give me crap about how I used to tout how much better Laserdisc was than DVD and how Laserdiscs would still be around for a long time.

Is it possible that combo players could become the norm? If the Blu-Ray and HD camps do make a deal to stick to one format now and divide up the royalties, wouldn't it be in their best interest to make sure any new Blu-Ray players can also play HD discs? Would it be any more expensive in the manufacturing process to make Blu-Ray players backwards compatible with HD-DVD the same way both types of players are now backwards compatible to DVD? I would guess it would be cheaper for the companies to make sure all people migrating from HD-DVD to Blu-Ray players can still play their HD-DVDs rather than institute some kind of exchange program to swap those HD-DVDs for Blu-Rays. Combo players being the norm would also keep the value of all the HD-DVD media that's currently on the market from collapsing too far or too fast which should keep retailers who have inventories of them happier too.

Why would they care about the few of us who bought HD DVDs when they're trying to sell HD on Blu-ray to the masses? We're small potatoes. Personally, I'd think that it would be great if they did,but business is business. They are going to do what makes them the most cash, which usually doesn't include playing nice with those who picked the wrong door.

It would definitely be ideal for combo players to become the norm, but I can't see that happening because of the amount of time it would take for combo players to become the standard. I fear that by then, BD would have such a large hold of the HDM market that it would be pointless for manufacturers to include HD-DVD functionality into the players.

Retailers prefer one format, studios prefer one format, and consumers prefer one format. I think that if Warner had gone red, the chances of combo players becoming the norm would be much greater, but now, the momentum is all on Blu-ray. Why would manufacturers bother with HD-DVD now other than to appease HD-DVD owners (such as myself) who already own HD-DVD players?

I'll give you $50 for the player and a couple of your HD-DVD movies.

I can use a nice upconvertor for SD-Movies.

If you sell or dump your HD-DVD's then the terrorists have won!

I personally still LOVE my HD-DVD's and will watch them until my 360 dies. (which isn't great odds, i know) But my next purchase will be a dual player like that Samsung.

I watched the LaserDisc version of 2001 again a couple of months ago. As long as you have a player, theres no reason to dump the discs.

I'm thinking I'm going to return my shipment when it arrives. The thrill is gone all too soon. Thanks, WB.

Your player isn't any good without the discs and the player will last for several years so enjoy.

I'll be returning Shrek the 3rd and Bourne 3 to BB (got it during B1G1, even with $5 reward coupon, the two hd-dvds still came out to be $15 a piece). Not opened and probably i can score cheaper than this on the 2nd hand market

I returned around 8-10 HD-DVD titles last night. They were all unopened and Future Shop/Best Buy had no problem taking them all back. It was surprising that they took back a copy of the Mission Impossible Trilogy I got for Christmas two years ago, and gave me full store credit. The only problem is that it's hard to find all of those titles on Blu-ray right now, since it's after Christmas.

I still have a few more I should return.

I still haven't opened my HD-DVD Blade Runner, though I will probably keep it and not return in. I have another week and a half or so to decide, but I got it for about $10 less than the sale price and bought it with a gift card anyway. Besides, technically there's nothing wrong with it

Take them to Sony US HQ and beg for forgiveness. I am sorry but I am fed up with the recent whining threads/posts. We all bought HD-DVD knowing that there was a format war going on. Now, it seems like anything with red case is a plague. This format war thing is pale in comparison with the current prices of real estate or stock market. It is time to stand by our decisions and stop whining. Rant over.

Who's whining? I'm debating if I'll keep my online order and wanted to know that if I don't, if can I return it to a B&M store.
Actually, in a smaller way, this whole HD thing is a lot like the current prices of real estate. Do I stay put in my current home or do I want to sell it and get out while I can?
But, this is a posting board about DVDs, not real estate or the stock market.

I'm fortunate to have a second-hand store nearby that buys dvds, blu-rays and HD-DVDs. Except for titles not available in Bluray such as V for Vendetta, Matrix trilogy & Batman Begins, I just sold all my WB HD-DVD titles (which isn't a lot) and got to replace them with Bluray versions. Will do the same with Universal & Paramount once they go Blu as well.

Though purple, I really rooted for HD-DVD to win :-(

I love how people post how small their HD collection is when it's close to triple digits.

Personally I only have Heroes, Bourne Trilogy, Knocked Up and my 5 freebies.
