I'm not buying all the last minute spin & FUD, I think they will eventually go Blu, I think it just makes sense (at least to me anyways). OTOH if Warner goes solely red, I won't stop buying their titles, but I will be disappointed. If they do stay neutral, I am encouraged by reports that New Line's Shoot 'Em Up BD features an encode with bitrate that surpasses what is possible on HD DVD... can't wait to check it out when it arrives from Amazon tomorrow. As long as Warner/NL stop giving BD encodes aimed at the lowest common denominator, I have no current issue with them keeping both formats.

+1. I have Shoot Em Up, the bitrate peaks at 39 many, many times, and that is just the video. This was done on a PC and not the PS3 bitrate meter or the PowerDVD one, but using XPort (via demuxing the audio and video). There is NO WAY that this video encode would work on HD DVD, period. It is maxed out on video + audio using Blu-Ray specs. Great work by new line, looks AND sounds just amazing. Blind Buy for me and very happy with it.

Please don't cancel TAOJJBYTCRF.

Maxflier 01-02-08 08:36 PM

So they wouldn't show the movie anywhere when it was in theaters and now they are possibly canceling the HD release? Jesus Christ, do they just not want people to see TAOJJBYTCRF or what???

Sounds great, I will be watching it tomorrow!

I doubt it means anything, but when I was trying to preorder Bonnie and Clyde there was only a listing on Amazon for the HD DVD. Again, this probably means nothing, but it is strange what happened with Jesse James. Granted all versions of that movie are gone so who knows.

Interesting....

Can you tell the difference between a 25Mbps and a 35Mbps video stream?

Supermallet 01-02-08 11:37 PM

If he looks at a meter he can.

Generally speaking, I can tell the difference between a recent Disney encode and a Warner encode. The Disney encode is the one that will have my jaw on the floor.

Arpeggi 01-02-08 11:46 PM

Blade Runner.

Very nice considering the age of the film. IMO doesn't come close to touching the Rat, Cars, Lost S3, or POTC3. Doesn't come close to touching Apocalypto or either of the 1st 2 POTC films either. Again IMO Disney has set the bar for PQ/AQ in HDM that all other studios (both BD and HD DVD and certainly Warners) have yet to reach.

If Warner could do better, I'd love to see even better transfers of The Searchers, Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca, and 2001, because I was mighty impressed with all of those.

Universal has done several reference material transfers on HD DVD, just as Fox has done some utter crap transfers on Blu-ray. It's not the format that's the issue, it's the people doing the transfer.

I was very impressed with all 3 of those titles, ESPECIALLY The Searchers. Could they have been even better? Maybe, maybe not. Except for possibly Robin Hood which has yet to debut on BD, it's unfortunate that we'll probably never find out with a future double-dip since the sales for those titles have been reportedly dismal at best.

Supermallet 01-03-08 12:07 AM

I think Warner has proven its commitment to its classics. The chances of those titles getting a whole new transfer would have been slim, anyway, as WB typically doesn't do that.

I just want Gremlins :(

Supermallet 01-03-08 12:11 AM

I prefer Gremlins 2, myself.

As do I, but I think we have a better chance of getting Gremlins first rather then Gremlins 2. I'll take either...NOW Warner!

Agreed on those titles... though a unconfirmed rumor going around right now says that Batman Begins will be getting a new encode for BD to be released when Dark Knight hits the theater. If true & if the PQ is less 'soft' than the HD DVD, I will SO be double-dipping!

I wouldn't put too much stock in a Blu-ray.com insider. He could just be setting things up for a big dissapointment if Warner goes Red that they can blame a payout and no longer will there be a new, better version etc.

That's why I said "If true". I'll believe it when it's in my hands & on my screen... kinda like the high bit-rate Shoot 'Em Up from New Line will be tomorrow! :D2:

Which not a single Blu-ray "insider" had any previous knowledge of might I add. Apparently they now know Warners plans 6+ months in advance though in regards to Batman and The Matrix Trilogy. Love it.

Harry Lime 01-03-08 01:33 AM

It would be fantastic if Batman gets a BD transfer. Im not looking foreward to paying for a lower quality release.

Legolas 01-03-08 03:12 AM

They're gonna abandon both formats and go with DivX and laser disc.
