What I really like about the packaging for Lost is that it works for those of us who like uniform packaging, yet it also works for those who want something different.

However, I think I'm still going to wait to buy it until we know they're releasing the previous seasons. I'd rather start from the beginning.

It looks like its going to be like Planet Earth. If you want to show off the cardboard spine you can, if you want to show off the Blu-ray case side you can.

I wouldn't hold your breath on previous seasons right now. I don't think the HDM market is big enough for those expensive sets to sell. I know Lost is by far more popular then Prison Break, but how well did that set sell on Blu-ray? Smallville? Nip/Tuck? Rescue Me? Sopranos? Lost will be, by far the best seller out of all of them though.

Here's this guy...
http://www.soundadviceblog.com/?p=677

Web forums were ablaze this morning because of a controversial report by Rich Greenfield of Pali Research, saying in 2008 Warner Bros. would cease support of HD DVD and become Blu-ray only. As a syndicated newspaper columnist I have contacts within the industry and found the whole thing suspicious and oddly timed. My PR contacts put me in touch with Jim Noonan, Warner Bros. Senior Vice President and General Manager, for clarification. I received a response almost immediately and his reply is as follows:

“Dear Mr. Lindich, We have made no decision to change our present policy which is to produce in both HD DVD and Blu-ray.”

No denial, no silence as one would expect if change was in the works… I received a quick confirmation that their policy won’t be changing. Nothing surprising here, given Warner’s strong support of the HD DVD format with exclusives such as The Matrix and Batman Begins, as well as Warner’s embracing of HD DVD’s web interactivity on the new Harry Potter titles. To learn more about the differences between the HD DVD and Blu-ray Harry Potter titles, see The State of HD DVD at gizmodo.com.

It is possible Warner could swing one way or the other in 2008, but for now, it’s undecided and that’s straight from a Warner executive.
Just a small footnote on the situation.

Almost forgot, I got an E-mail earlier today from Amazon.uk that the Seventh Seal BD has finally 'dispatched'.

Led Zeppelin Song remains the same blu-ray/hd-dvd showing that it will be available in 2010 apparently on Amazon. Does anyone know if this title has been delayed again?

This type of coverage could cause it to be a self-fulfilling prophecy even if Warner hasn't made a decision yet. This story is breaking the day of one of the biggest releases of the year. If it causes poor sales for HP on HD-DVD due to people fearing the format won't be supported much longer it may force WB to make a decision sooner rather than later.

The insider at AVS (David Vaughn) said that the decision to go either HD DVD or BD only would be made on the Time Warner corporate level, NOT the studio level. If that is true, then these quotes from WB execs. don't really hold much water, do they?

Regarding the Lost set, I think they are doing great jobs on these boxset packages. I love that the cases are not taking up much room on my shelf, yet they house 4-6 discs. I just got my Die Hard set and like the way it's made. The packaging for Close Encounters is also spiffy.

it wouldn't surprise me if they pulled it to add to the movie by adding a coda to the movie of their performance last night in London. Sounds like it was great.

I'd like to see this concert in HD. Here's to hoping.

I don't believe for a minute WB is going to go Blu-ray only at CES. It just seems way too soon for them to make such a drastic move, considering how ardently they have preached dual-format support (and the fact that Blu-ray is still, at this late date, not ready for prime tIME).

However, as much as I love my HD-DVDs, I'd stop buying them altogether if WB went Blu. I wouldn't replace any of my red-cased discs - I am waiting for reviews of that sweet new LG combo player before pulling the trigger - but a WB exclusivity announcement would be the end of HD-DVD, guaranteed.

I just can't imagine Microsoft and Universal allowing that to happen at THIS stage in the game. Come summer/fall of 2008, that's a different story.

Thanks for the link. I was going to ask about replacement cases too today. The ones at the site you provided have the "fold-away" latch which is what most of my problem ones have. The flap won't lock to the case. Out of about 25 BD cases I have, 3 or 4 don't close properly. Out of hundreds of DVDs I purchased over the years I don't think I've had that many (if any) with that problem.

Panasonic is running a deal with the their new Profile 1.1 player, the DMP-BD30K, where they're bundling it with their 1080p plasmas for a 500 dollar savings which is exactly the price of the player. Here's the link and Best Buy has already started offering the promo.

In my mind, this is a MUCH smarter idea than giving away free movies. Bundle the HD purchases together, get consumers to identify one with the other. A movie is fleeting, a player has much more lasting value.

Toshiba should have been doing this from the beginning especially when the A2 hit below $150.

Totally agree with you. Kudos to Panasonic for being smart enough to step up to the plate with a fantastic deal.

Did anybody see the price on the Samsung BD-P1400 1080p dropped to $270?

Sorry, if it's old news.

Yeah saw that earlier.

I think there has been deals in the past where TVs came w/ a free HD-DVD Player.

I didn't realize it but the bonus disc in the Harry Potter set is a regular DVD, not Blu-ray.
