That's what people should do. It's clear Blu-ray is the frontrunner so why panic and kiss HD-DVD goodbye. It still offers amazing clarity and performance for the movies in HD. Hold onto 'em and shoot for a combo player if Blu-ray wins the format war.

I think Warner timed their announcement to take the wind out of any MS HD-DVD announcement on the Xbox360. If MS were planning on announcing such a thing, I think it's possible that Warner's announcement might be enough to make them change their mind...

So lets say something crazy was announced today, and I started thinking about getting a Blu player to supplement my HD-A2...what is the best player in the $400 range? I assume the PS3, even though I don't need another gaming machine since I have a 360. Or is a standalone better?

The only setback of the PS3 as a BD player is the lack of an external display. Other than that, it is by far the best player at that price range. No standalone will receive the firmware support that the PS3 has continually received.

It depends on your needs whether a standalone would be better. If you have an HDMI receiver the 40GB PS3 is a great way to go. If you would need 5.1 analog audio outputs on a player to connect to an older receiver a standalone might be the way to go to get lossless audio. The Panasonic BD30K can be had for about $435 from TigerDirect at Amazon. It's a 1.1 profile player and decodes DTS-HD MA which the PS3 doesn't currently do. If you got a PS3 Blu-ray remote that brings the price up closer to the Panasonic. The PS3 seems to have the least issues of any player out so far.

You might want to sit tight for a week and see what is announced at CES next week. I'm sure there will be some new models announced.

I actually like that it doesn't have a bright, distracting display. It isn't really needed because you can press a button to bring up an onscreen display that tells you everything. Then again, maybe I feel differently because I have it in the back of the room, where I wouldn't see the display anyway.

I'd say the lack of a comprehensive IR remote solution is a bigger factor.

The only thing I can say is while the B1G1s last I will replace what I can easily. Who knows if these deals will continue so I'm replacing some Warner HD DVDs while I can do it at no expense.

Combos players also need to improve before I can put my faith in one as a replacement for my A2.

I will survive with my A2 and PS3 in my home theater for now.

My current reciever does not have HDMI, so whatever player I choose, would be running Component and Optical. Thoughts between Sony's $400 player VS PS3? Again, I dont need a PS3 for gaming, happy with my 360.

That's what I'm doing now. I put up all my WB discs last night on ebay. The BOGO sale is helping as well to replace some of those. My HD DVDs would still work, but just knowing that WB will not be making another HD DVD after May makes me want to go ahead and replace what I have now.

Then get the 40Gb at $400 and don't use it for gaming. Your choice, but the PS3 is one of the best players (DVD or BD) that I've used. Fast and quiet, it sits next to my Oppo and more SD DVDs play on the PS3 now than the Oppo.

CES: 'Sleeping Beauty,' 'Finding Nemo' Headline Disney's 2008 Blu-ray Plans

Tags: Disc Announcements, Disney, CES 2008 (all tags)

Disney is previewing its Blu-ray plans for 2008 in a pre-CES annoucement, including official confirmation of the highly-anticipated high-def debuts of 'Sleeping Beauty,' 'Finding Nemo' and 'National Treasure.'

Unveiled today via press release (which can be read in full here), Disney says it will be releasing "an expanding Blu-ray slate" of top titles throughout the coming year, a mix of both new releases and catalog favorites boasting "new technological advancements" and extensive bonus features.

Although no titles were revealed that had not been already announced or previously hinted at in company statements, the press release does offer the first official confirmation of Blu-ray versions of 'Finding Nemo,' 'National Treasure,' 'The Chronicles of Narnia' and the first-ever Disney Platinum Edition high-def release, 'Sleeping Beauty.'

While not the studio's complete line-up for 2008, the titles outlined in the release (for North America) are as follows:

January 8: 'The Rock,' 'Con Air'

January 22: 'The Game Plan'

February 5: 'Crimson Tide'

February 12: 'Gone Baby Gone,' 'Becoming Jane'

March 4: 'The Rookie'

March 11: 'Dan in Real Life'

April 1: 'Hidalgo,' 'Coyote Ugly,' 'Unbreakable'

Spring 2008 (Dates TBA): 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,' 'National Treasure'

Also in 2008 (Dates TBA): 'Sleeping Beauty,' 'Finding Nemo'

Disney also touted a number of Blu-ray exclusives, including the studio's first "Cine-Explore" video commentary to feature full motion picture-in-picture on 'Finding Nemo,' while 'Sleeping Beauty' will feature a "Virtual Castle" activity utilizing the new BD-Live technology and the interactive game "Maleficent's Challenge." The 'Sleeping Beauty' Platinum Edition Blu-ray will also boast a PCM 7.1 Surround track, a first for Disney.

Full specs for the remaining titles were not outlined in the release, but expect further details as Disney continues to roll out its Blu-ray announcements in the weeks ahead.

Definitely in for Unbreakable in April, but honestly that is it other than Sleeping Beauty and Finding Nemo which probably won't be out till the fall. First 5 months of 08 are going to be slow.

Just Finding Nemo for me. I might get Unbreakable or Dan in Real Life depending on BOGO sales (if they continue).

I wonder why they didn't mention No Country for Old Men for March 11. That's still coming, right? Surely that's a bigger deal than Dan in Real Life or Becoming Jane.

I would guess the post above meant to say Sleeping Beauty not Cinderella

Yeah, Coyote Ugly gets a date, but no Sin City date yet?

Honestly, that's a crock o'shit.

Yeah no kidding. They've been parading that cover around for a while and showing it on BD trailers.

Yeah, some of the movies being announced REALLY makes me wonder if these studio heads know what they are doing!
Sin City would sell. Hidalgo and Coyote Ugly will NOT.

I suspect they may wait for the sequel for Sin City.

The sequel is not theirs though. I believe it belongs to Weinstein.

Sure, but they may still want to release it when the awareness and demand is higher due to the sequel. There have been tie-ins with other studios' releases.

Sin City 2 has a tentative release of 2009 according to IMDB. I sure hope they don't wait until then to release the original on BD.

I"m sure Disney will have more announcements. It would be pretty foolish to think that is the entire BD slate for the Mouse this year.
