I agree. NBC is awful. CBS,ABC,&ESPN are the best... My CBS has weird audio glitches sometimes, like it keeps changing formats, which causes my receiver to click, so that's annoying...

"its hard to tell with the Motorola cable boxes though, because you have to choose 1080 or 720, and the box converts each channel to that format"

Where do you do this with the cable box? I have had a Moto DCT6412 III for almost a year and I don't see where to do that in the menu's. I'm in Zip 24273 if that helps you any.

With the box off, press the setup button. It should then appear on the screen in white & black, but sometimes it doesn't and you need to navigate just on the front display. Its weird, sometimes it shows on the screen and sometimes it doesn't.

I've got one of those Comcast dual tuner DVR boxes and I love it, greatest thing since sliced bread. The only thing I wish I could do with it would be to hook up an additional storage unit like say a MyBook and archive more broadcasts... as far as I know, it won't let you do it.

Thanks for the info redbill, I was able to find it. It was set to 1080i already so I left it alone, but changed the setting for the non HD channels to 480P that made a big difference in watching those channels.

I've got one of those DCT6412 III dual tuner boxes & MAN, OH MAN! It's one HELL of a Great box, indeed!

I for one really LOVE the DVR thingamabobby because I can copy all those great not-on-DVD yet Noir films off of TCM and then record them to DVD!

As long as I don't touch the cable box remote while recording (to my Panasonic recorder from the DVR) and press mute, or volume up or down, I can get a down-right/ better than none at all, decent copy without any of those pesky on screen menu things, but sometimes like when the phone rings, I forget that I'm recording and before I know it I'll press mute and then have to record it all over again!

I've learned to hide the cable box remote(s) and have pretty much eliminated that problem.

For $10 a month (for the DVR part) I've got an unreleased Noir & other G-r-e-a-t unreleased film collection that BLOWS MY MIND!

What an OUTTA-SIGHT time to be alive!

Technology KICKS ARSE!

I don't know where you live, but by me the stand alone HD w/HDMI converters are scarce.

Uggh. Please don't, wherever you are. The last thing we need is more weather wasting bandwidth. NBC *used* to look pretty good, I've got some recordings of Boomtown that look great. But it seems like nowadays most affiliates waste 25% of their bandwidth multicasting that useless weather channel.

Anyone who cares about the weather has a million places to check on the internet, the daily paper, news radio, the actual "weather channel" on cable, etc. Don't waste your station's bandwidth and signal quality on redundant crap.

I can somewhat agree. When I was able to get the weather channel from the one local station that does it, I checked it out maybe once. It's nice to see the live local doppler, but I found myself looking online for the online doppler. It's a little behind, but it's OK with me. If there was anything serious, I'm sure that our station would break into regular programming. Though, I guess, if everyone had a digital tuner, and could get the weather channel easily, it would be great if they would just run regular programming during severe weather with a crawl or graphic pointing the viewers to the weather channel for the latest information. I hate when they break into my programming, especially when the severe weather is actually not near me. But that's a debate for another place, I guess.

DISCLAIMER: I hope to GAWD there isn't anything in this post that violates any rule here at DVD Talk pertaining to copying stuff! After all, I am only talking about copying things seen over the public airwaves and stuff many folks copied with their VCRs back in the day when VCRs were hip & or cool. I don't believe there is a law against copying TV shows or stuff like that...is there? Anyway, Mods or Administrators: Please do as you deem necessary and delete any contents that are not appropriate. Thank you, and I apologize for any inconvenience or extra work this may have caused you.

I'm using the video out (S-video is the best I can do but it's better than nothing!) and right & left out for audio from the cable box outputs into the inputs on the recorder. Pretty simple stuff really.
And has anyone figured how to get the stuff off the DVR on to a PC to burn it?
I just bought one of those Dell XPS 420's with all those goofy bells & whistles and it has something called Xcelerator. Well anyway, it has a S-video, video, & right & left inputs right on the front of the PC, so all I have to do to copy stuff from my DVR is to connect a cable from the Cable box outputs (I've got a few Y-adapters back there so I don't have to keep plugging & unplugging the cables every time I want to record something), to those input plugs on the Xcelerator, and there ya have it! I can copy directly to my hard drive. After that, I can edit and tidy up the beginning & ending of the film to snip off any unwanted crap, and end up with a fairly nice copy for my virtually free, ever-growing private collection of currently unreleased Noir & Classic (including some really GREAT Science Fiction & Horror) movies!

The Turner Classic Movie channel is really great because they don't bogart the screen with too many channel ID stamps, or condense the end credits with those banner advertisements, voice-overs for upcoming movies, or what have you like Encore (for example), does.

(Not that they ever play anything not already released on DVD...but it's just the 'principle' of the thing that gets my gander! )
